*What do you think about the changes to the metal playlists on Spotify? Comment below!*
I wasn’t even aware of it til now, I still have no idea why they’re doing it, the Deathcore and Metalcore gives me an idea of putting certain types of metal into one “Genre” because metalCORE and deathCORE, but that’s stupid if that’s an actual reason. But idc what Spotify does, I’ll listen to music anyway I can
It's definitely whack as hell.
Well what could they be loosing from it being there? Maybe there tired of paying for storage lol
I haven’t paid for Spotify since before the lockdown….
Obviously Spotify hates sun genres
Metalcore. Deathcore. Djent. Prog. Long ago, the four sub-genres lived together in harmony. Then, everything changed when the Spotify Nation attacked. Only Nik Nocturnal, master of all four elements, could stop them.
🤣
'Phrost
lol, gotem!
I think we're better off without them tbh kek
One of the best comments I've seen
I don't think spotify knows what metal genres are
i mean they cater so much to the mainstream artists like Doja Cat, kendrick lamar and justin bieber. Today's Metal is not commercially successful as rap, pop or country.
metalheads disagree about metal genres lol
Rap and pop bring in a majority of their money. They could care less about metal.
You never know with Spotify next thing you know they are gonna be putting imagine dragons in a death metal playlist
Kinda always thought this
This isn't even a bruh moment anymore. What the fuck are they smoking over there at Spotify HQ?
Taylor Swift brand cigs
Whatever Rogan gives them
Some shit crack
Pop on a joint
Just found my new favorite black metal band: megadeth. Hopefully Spotify can bring them some deserved attention
I had to laugh out loud
Honestly I think someone got like fired, and then some dude who doesn't listen to metal had to like check that other guys work was like "there's a lotta playlists we can clean this up make it more streamlined for that there clicks." and then mashed together stuff that kinda sounded the same but they aren't into metal so they listened to like two songs and were like "this works. :)"
You're halfway right. I know what happened and it's the former -> AI.
The AI estimated.
Spotify is going after lists with suspected hate/racist/supremacist content. Metal has had a hate problem for a long time (skinheads in Slayer mosh pits back in the 80s), and no one is really taling about it.
@@noname-ng6sj you're saying someone left/got fired and they're using AI to reorganize? That's a terrible idea lol
Because of all the "likes" I just had to read it in Shaggy's voice XDD
You use them more than I do surprisingly
Spotify! What are you doing man. I mean personally it doesn’t really affect me cause I listen to pretty much everything Rock and Metal BUT for the Metal community as a whole this is…this beyond blasphemy…this is..this just tragic. I have no words.
They did something similar with the Rock Hard playlist, it used to be the bridge between the Rock and Metal playlists. It had bands like Halestorm, Volbeat, and Three Days Grace. If you listen now you get a strange assortment of everything. If you go to it right now it has country, pop, pop punk, blues, metalcore, hard rock, classic metal, nu metal, and more. Its a mess.
I was noticing that and legit went “who the hell added all these songs?” I mean I still listen to it cause I listen to pretty much everything music with the exception of pop music but still I was like “some of these songs don’t belong here”
Spotify 🤦♂️
Here’s my theory: they’re merging all these playlists to disrupt the balance of the listeners, causing them to actually stop listening to those specific playlists. Then when the number of streams drop dramatically, they downright simplify the playlists more or drop them completely.
The reason:
they probably don’t have that many people streaming metal as much as pop/indie etc. so maybe they’re doing this to cut costs on having to pay bands.
They’ve done really scummy shit in the past soooo I wouldn’t be surprised.
They are bit by bit getting rid of everything that isn't Joe rogan being a moron
When spotify is making cuts and they're left with the "Metal is Metal" type of guy
What this immediately looked like to me was Spotify decided they needed to cut down the size of a department because they were not meeting some kind of stats and so you are seeing the X% workload being merged into X amount of employees left to manage the metal genre playlists. Executives pay people to do things better than they do until they cant profit from them anymore. There is a couple different versions of this idea this one is my first impression.
Either way, i dont care who you are, Megadeth popping up on the Norwegian Black Metal playlist is pretty fucking funny. I wouldnt be mad if that never left that playlist to be honest.
100% agree. Literally the easiest solution was to update the playlists less frequently. But some asshat decided to shake things up.
Megadeth is definitely my favorite Norwegian Black Metal band tho
@@DrDisemb0wel Some brutal black metal vocals megadeth have🤣
Spotify crimes against metalheads
This is why i create my own playlist, because I can blend what i want. I can blend Miss May I's heaviest songs with Suicide Silence's calmer songs perfectly lol. even though Emmure is considered metalcore, I can put a lot of their songs in a deathcore playlist, alongside slaughter to prevail, Chelsea grin and Lorna shore. Spotify is like "Lorna Shore? sounds like Metallica to me"
Bro you sound like a copy of me, excellent choices all around!
@@Burnout_Blanco fuck yeeaaa
This is actually a bad take, because that's actually what Spotify is doing right now...
Plus, the whole idea is that you get new songs on it added FOR you.
Try it, you'd be surprised. They do the exact thing you're talking about, like literally on the dot. You'd love it.
I do this and when i want some new songs i just go on the recommended songs bit, the songs are almost always pretty similar to what i like
The problem is that you can only blend yourself , what you already know . Those playlist where a decent way to discover stuff for enough people . Now it restricts the selection for newbies , and exposure of new bands . All of which already was not perfect and exhaustive already , but still a decent and working system
Spotify users: if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Spotify : Too late fam.
Seeing Septicflesh under the former power metal playlist is fucking hilarious 🤣
Nik seems like such a fun person to be around :D
I'm starting to wonder if they culled playlists in other genres too. Like merging gangster rap and trap into one hip-hop playlist, or bebop and fusion into one jazz playlist.
Hiphop brings them too much money for them to mess with it.
it'll be fine. just throw slipknot, Dio, and Cryptopsy all on the same playlist. it isnt even about what people like. its about what you'd want to listen to at a certain time.
very rarely will i put all of my music on shuffle, because i dont like what it does to my brain when it goes matchbox 20 to Nile.
I love Power Metal and Symphonic Metal, but I usually skip every instrumental song on albums because I want vocals. Now the Epic and Melodic playlist is a nightmare for me😭😭😭
Exactly! I listened to the Epic and Melodic playlist and was so confused why is there so many instrumental songs
See this is why I now don't listen to any of the pre-made playlists by Spotify any more. Me and every other user on Spotify can make playlists better than Spotify themselves
Next week's video: they've blended old school metal and nu metal
Prog and djent together is soooo fucking funny! Are they TRYING to get the music grads pissed?! Lmao
I first noticed this was happening whenever they deleted the "Heavy Beatdown" playlist awhile back because I listened to it religiously, I love some good Hardcore stuff. But I didn't realize it was getting worse from there
They deleted the too?!
@@nitin3o3 yeah awhile ago, it was my favorite playlist
This feels like a kick in the gut from Spotify :( don't know why they're even doing this
My brain just hurts seeing Megadeth in a BlackMetal playlist
You're joking right. right!?. there is no goddamn way they put the thrash metal in a blackmetal
Lol
I agree with this 100%. I listen to various types of metal usually, but if I wanted to listen to a curated playlist of just one type at a specific time, it would be pretty jarring to switch between these bands the way they've blended them.
This is why I make my own playlists
bruh
on tidal i got one "death" playlist with death metal, deathcore and grindcore, a genre-defying "metal" playlist with basically the "big stuff", an "extreme" playlist where theres municipal waste next to suicide silence, a "tomorrow metal" playlist for experimental stuff and of course a separate Black metal playlist to keep lord Lucifer happy but theres kardashev on it
you'll never understand my pain
This is why I listen to CD's, downloaded music, and Amazon Music for stuff I don't own. Metal always seems to get screwed up in playlists.
I was bit skeptical because I like the fact that people will explore more music beyond their subgenre taste, like if you only made reactions to metalcore I would never discover beauty of deathcore, but Megadeth in Norwegian Black Metal...holy fuck :D
I about pissed myself on the "What the fuck is dark metal"
Spotify trying to start a war💀
I loved listening to the instrumental metal playlist while reading. Good thing I like power metal too 😅
Yeah when you find your new favorite deathcore band in epic and melodic, you know something's wrong
Honestly this is so sad the playlist "New Core" and "Top of the Core" was my way to go to do my own playlists.
Not to mention, if you go on pretty much any other genre on Spotify you get a popular playlists section and a new releases section
Oh, except for metal of course...
Spotify must have fired a bunch of curators to save money. These are editorial playlists, not algorithmic.
Power metal is known for the singing. Imagine throwing on the epic and melodic playing expecting to hear that and half the songs are instrumental:'(
I’ve actually started noticing a ton of metal bands that I like aren’t on Spotify/Apple Music anymore. Mostly (I can only assume) the ones with “graphic/disturbing” album art I’m guessing.
Which bands can you name as examples?
For as long as Spotify has been curating music, it has purposely listed the metal genre at the bottom. They only want their listeners to absorb Pop music or hip hop. Then the Spotify overlords will be satisfied.
Thanks for going way deep into all of us about this.
It looks like Spotify looked at the pop genres' playlists (everything from singer/songwriter to edm to hiphop/rap) and thought every genre should have playlists like ✨️Train Wings✨️ or ✨️Galaxy Brawl Time✨️ instead of putting similar subgenres into a playlist and just ignored that some genres just won't fit into random categories like these.
The worst part is that they apparently also just make up some playlist names so that they don't have any connection to the genre anymore, like Modus Mio. I see this playlist on my Spotify home Page everyday and I DON'T FUCKING LISTEN TO HIPHOP. When I researched what was behind that name, the only thing I got is that it's a Deutschrap (German Rap/German Hiphop) playlist that once was called Generation Deutschrap. They apparently hired some "agency" to come up with that new name and there have been events named after the playlist. But it seems that the name is just made up and has nothing to do with the music.
I’m new into metal and I need some suggestions. So far I like really heavy songs, but not like deathcore, that’s too strange for me. I like Avenged Sevenfold, Trivium, 2000s metalcore.
Darkest Hour - Deliver Us album (and Undying Ruin). No clean vocals, but amazing music.
@@Roonagu Thanks! Will listen to it
old a day to remember, as i lay dying, some motionless in white, bad omens, are all good metalcore bands to get you into screaming and have breakdowns but also have amazing beautiful chorus and great vocals
Atreyu, Underoath, Saosin, just a few older bands that come to mind that slap hard.
Try All Hail The Yeti, they’re heavy metal, not metalcore though. Some good songs by them are: witch is dead, headless valley, bury your memory
I love how u mentioned InVisions. They are like one of my all time fav bands seen them live twice need to see them again
it's only a matter of time until they merge a metal playlist with a pop playlist
Moved to tidal a little while ago and haven't looked back took a little to start building my music catalogue but it's greatly improved over time and sound quality is much better. Spotify really took a nose dive for me especially when my premium account was getting ads anyway and it's the only account of anything I've had over all the years that was somehow repeatedly compromised by a leak.
Also Spotify has so many repeat songs on all these Playlists it's insane I don't know if this condensing fixed some of that.
I listened to the rock mix which spotify curated for me yesterday, the first three songs were from As I lay Dying, Becoming the Martyrs and Hatebreed, now I know atleast why Metal is just my 2nd most listened to Genre on Spotify
I never really listen to Spotify playlists, they're generally crap and never portray what they are called.
The playlists I do sometimes listen to, are the ones generated off the style of other bands I regularly listen to.
Spot on
I legit was wondering what happened to the instrumental metal playlist, I use that to work on homework, love starting off with Acid Rain by LTE, but it just disappeared and to think they merged instrumental with non-instrumental is nuts
Dude Spotify is so fucked right now with their playlists.
What I want to know is why did they merge/ delete all these playlists in the first place? To clear up server space? Do they think this will increase use?
I discovered that you can search "genre" mix and get a auto-generated playlist for you based somewhat on your listening. When I first found them they were really good and diverse and in the last week or so they all sorta became samey.
Nik, the quintessential black metal album is Dissection - Storm of the Lights Bane. You will love it.
You have to love that Polyphia is in a playlist that's cover picture features a dwarf power metal band LMAO
I've been listening to a Metal Rewind Playlist for months and now it's just gone. I don't f****** know anymore
Spotify's vision is to make hybrid music genres they want a revolution in the music industry.
Metal becoming the underground again and stream services said guess we don’t need these playlists anymore this is kinda why streaming isn’t best for artists
at Apple Music there are still many many niche playlists for Metal, for example "Avante Garde Metal" or "Blackgaze"
i think Bandcamp is the only place for new underground rock/metal now
Spotify's treachery goes way deeper even than this. Ever heard of comedy metal band Psychostick? "I can only count to four!" parody of Bodies by Drowning Pool? Yeah, because their music falls under the category of "comedy", Spotify yanked half their songs away without warning. They emailed Spotify for an answer. No answer after 3 days, and then they yanked the rest of their albums (except their latest) off the platform. Still no word from them. They did some detective work and discovered that due to some litigation problem, "comedy" is now under the category of "spoken word" as they deal with some issue with stand-up comedians. Working with their distributor (Tunecore) they were able to get their music back on the platform, but still... others lost weeks of stream revenue without warning.
Looks like they brought back deathcore, but it only has like 700 followers. BUT they apparently don't know what deathcore is cause they added Great American Ghost, Alpha Wolf, Crystal Lake, etc
From what i understood from reddit there was a beef between some guy from metal and he wanted to be erased from Spotify cuz of bad reveneu and trap for artists (his words). Then people followed him to like "show they r with him". And then Spotify got mad and have beef with metal scene entirely.
I dont rly know what bands r involved and who Spotify going to remove and who stay but that was only thing I could find when i tried to get lore behind that from your first video.
Most of them r removed from playlists and algorythms but there r few who got wiped from the platform completely but stayed on deezer or applemusic.
Good to see Time, the Valuator opening the playlist
If there was a Black metal and a Death metal genres in spotify they would've definitely merged those two, just imagine the Absolute OUTRAGE 🤣🤣
Literally every change Spotify has made over the last 10 years that I have noticed, from your changes, feature deletions, and now this. They literally have people without brains running the company.
Hey now us prog metal heads love us some good djent. Meshuggah, Time the Valuator, Animals as Leaders, Periphery...the list goes on. All popular at the prog metal subreddit. Only the crazies live that Berkeley life 24/7
When I want to slay dragons, Belvedere by Intervals is definitely the go to.
I got your playlist downloaded. Would be a decent idea to back yours up so if it's deleted you can recreate it
There was a list called The Others that is now labeled as Alternative Metal
Epic & Melodic is a merge between Instrumental Madness and Power Metal :D Our song, which was in Got Djent? simply got transfered to it BUT as the instrumental version and we were like... What the Fuck :D !?
This is brutal. I didn’t notice until now. Further making your favourite metal harder to access, besides not being mainstream
i was about to listen to a good deathcore list but couldn't that specific list, i was confused but decided to listen the Spotify's own deathcore list, i did see deathcore/metalcore list too
Using Spotify for 4 years now and NEVER used those playlists tbh. They seemed so random anyway. Now they are just random another way, lol.
I listen to a wide variety of metal. Bullet for my Valentine, infant annihilator, pierce the veil, brand of sacrifice, exhoarder, 3 inches of blood, hatebreed, fleshgod apocalypse, crossfaith, cattle decapitation, and soooooo many more lol
Yeah I agree with you, personally I don't mind them being merged but I know a lot people won't be happy.
It seems like a couple of these Playlists have come back in the last coiple weeks don't know how it compares to how it used to be, but yeah, a couple these Playlists are back now
We can still rely on Spotify Listeners to compile genre specific lists, the only problem is that few users have unique lists ie same mainstream bands and mainstream songs in different lists, Spotify seemed to do separation much better than the users, which is why this is frustrating, although look hard enough, you will find unusual playlists.
Wow…we’d covered Metallica’s Orion and I did an editorial pitch in advance of next month’s release…and I freaking pitched for a playlist that no longer exists. Probably wouldn’t have a chance anyway but this is extremely disheartening
I'm a prog head that loves djent, so i don't mind that one, but they should've kept their hands off the power metal playlist!
The thing is, it would also be sad if they do/did this in other music generes like i dont' know Jazz or even Pop.
Thats not how you encourage people to try other stuff and stay on your platform.
1:18 So this is why Periphery named their latest album Djent Is Not a Genre. Because Spotify said it's no longer a genre.
They also deleted one of my favs that they made: garage rock revival
I did a little bit of my own research...... They seemed to have Shadow banned a few playlists.... I can still find death core and metal core playlists, but you have to go digging.
When you want Dream Theater, but you get Meshuggah
That song from Shadow Of Intent was an instrumental acually
Plus if I'm trying to expand out and try out and see what a genre has to offer it creates problems.
Something tells me Finn Mckenty will find this perfectly acceptable considering his transparent bias against metal and his relentless simping for Spotify.
Apparently there’s nothing more punk than getting your master’s degree, making a UA-cam channel and simping for a corporation
I get nik's message and i 100% agree with it however atleast from my personal experience i do not know anyone who has ever listened to the spotify currated metal playlist 🤣🤣
Did I see septicflesh in the formerly power metal playlist??? That's great
yeah i've given up on spotifys own playlist long before this... thank god for that
Went and checked out the Epic & Melodic playlist just to see for myself, and of course August Burns Red is on that playlist.
That does not make any God damn sense
I loved instrumental madness and got djent, they were my favourites :(
The only thing I could physically think of for a reason of doing this is that they don't want people to listen to metal for some reason. They want more traffic and other areas of the platform? Cause he only other option is that when they are looking up they analytics they don't have to go through the different playlists for each genre. But That doesn't make any sense because if we can find the specific Playlist we want 1 100% the people who made the Playlists can.
At one point spotify's gonna have a "Music with guitar" playlist with some pop song followed by LS or Archspire.
as a huge prog fan and musician holy shit im pissed about the djent-prog merge, i dont even hate djent but its such a diffent thing from prog that the playlist is essentially useless now
Right? I like djent a lot, but if I want to listen to prog, I want to listen to prog
If I’m vibing to some Dream Theatre or Queensryche I don’t wanna hear Meshuggah come up next, the disrespect is disgusting
Septic Flesh is an orchestral death metal band with a very low gutteral growls.... in the epic & melodic playlist....
that is hilarious for some of us....
Whoever signed off these changes has been promoted to a customer.
Some exec was probably like “all this shit sounds the same, why do we have so many metal playlists?”
Anyone knows why some songs just get hidden/unaviable to listen? Is it the authors? What's going on cause one of my favourite Deathcore albums is just gone.
Which band/album?
Must be regional lock
Could be the publisher just pulling it from distribution. (That's actually one of the problems with streaming... If a publisher just doesn't feel like it anymore, songs and albums, and entire bands can just vanish from it). Other possible reasons are regional limits or legal disputes.
@@RedOchsenbein Yeah thats why Decapitateds older albums werent on spotify. Decapitated had to go through a court battle to earn the rights of their music, so they could get it on spotify
Alright who in the hell spiked the punch bowl at Spotifys headquarters?
Its evolving…. Just backwards
Spotify really trying to make the battle of underground metal acts trying to get bigger by getting on playlists harder. its like we have this great big scene with loads of great new music and every traditional or huge musical outlet doesn't want to support it. I get its always been that way but at least with the old playlists there was a scene and chance for smaller bands in metal to get big and now its just going to be so much harder
