Running with live weather was a great suggestion. I love that MSFS will let you see storm fronts moving in from the distance, haze layers forming, and have dynamic situations to react to that may derail your plans if you don't do a good weather brief. Personally, the one very bad sim habit I had to break when starting flight lessons was not keeping the nose up during the landing, or worse, pushing it down to land. The first time I tried to land in real life the way I'd been landing in the sim resulted in my CFI reaching for the controls. For sure on the landing, if you create bad habits in the sim, they'll follow you right on over to the real aircraft. All good though, i made some solo landings before that if a CFI were there, I'm sure they would have reached for the controls. As long as you learn from it and correct irl AND in the sim. More content to come on the RV channel, i just threw a couple time lapses up there to have something last night.
Starting with a Desktop Sim as a new student pilot, the learner should always have at least a few hours in the sim with a CFI sitting beside you. Then transition smoothly to the real aircraft. Can save significant hours to PPL. This has been proven. For example, check out the training program at Cypress College in California. Also....See the exchange just below.

@@flightsimguides Yes .. Remote CFI's are easily available. Sporty's and FlightSimCoach BOTH have about a dozen Remote CFI's to choose from. The founder of FlightSimCoach was my first remote CFI during Covid lockdown. Later my local CFI gave me remote training via Skype screenshare. My first VOR navigation lesson was so immersive that I broke out in a sweat and held my breath. Needed a ten minute break to do the same short round trip again. Great learning experience. Many students can find a CFI willing to give time for remote training or will come to your home and sit with you. Today's hardware is finally both realistic and affordable. New hardware in 2024, so you can even get FFB devices for a reasonable price. Desktop Simulators can easily match BATD rated stationary units and if you have the budget can provide 3DOF motion.
Simbrief has become such a crutch for me, I have zero pilots experience just love to sim airline flights and recreate ones I’ve been on. I find simbrief has showed me what so many of these values meant that I can now manually enter my flight plans with the required info

Very good points. Excellent video. Another bad habit is to land even when you aren't fully stable. In real life a go around would be done if theres any chance of a hard landing / crash.

I actually do have to use my radio in MSFS I use sayintentions
@@themantheycallJay are you referring to the built-in prompts? That’s better than nothing for sure. Being able to talk to a real person ups the skill though.
@@flightsimguides no look up sayintentions. It’s a download you can install that is a AI.
and don't forget to keep the nose down once you start your descend abeam the keys. In the sim you don't easily stall and spin, in real life it can happen before you know it
Good points. Luckily I can ignore all that because I'll never be able to pilot a real plane except when everybody else had the fish...

Anyway, next step is measuring an ASK21 cockpit and getting a 3D-printer, starting the realism from there.
@@AlexDiesTrying yea anyone with a 3d printer and some Mobiflight/Arduino experience behind them can def create some amazing custom cockpits for their flight sims.
Well done. Hope viewers will recognize the value of your suggestions. One More: Book time with a live or remote CFI. Best way to prevent negative transfer of learning aka Bad Habits in operation of the flight controls, situational awareness, etc.
Yea, definitely a good suggestion, flying with a CFI. Best to get the good habits up front so you don't nurture your own bad habits in the sim. Is remote instruction a thing now? Wouldn't be surprised, that's awesome.
@@flightsimguides Remote Instruction is definitely a growing trend. Pilot Edge and Sporty's both offer this service. Also an outfit called Flight Sim Coach has a team of 13 Remote Instructors. The founder of FSC was my first remote instructor during Covid lockdown time. I also used a local CFI who continued my training from his home in those days. I learned a lot including my first VOR round trip navigation experience. Was so immersive on my 60" LED TV with my Yoko Yoke / MFG Rudder Pedals / TrackIR 5 etc. that I barely took a breath the whole time. Any CFI that is sim friendly can provide remote instruction. I use Skype screenshare.
