    Joseph, thank you so much for serving. Your commitment speaks volumes and I am thankful that prior enlisted men and women are in the classrooms along with our other Plebes. Your field experience is invaluable to these students and they will gain much from your input. I caught a glimpse of my own son in this video. Are you at USMA now?

    West Point is not alone in having a Corps of Cadets, in having a Long Gray Line- VMI and The Citadel, those magnificent Southern military colleges, are there as well and in no way should be overlooked.
    I have the utmost respect for the cadets of West Point, VMI, and The Citadel, and in about three years I'll be a cadet at VMI. I look forward to being able to say "I wear the ring" very much.

    Actually when I was 17 I enlisted in the South Carolina Army National Guard. That way between my junior and senior years in highschool I could do basic and get totally prepared for USMA. Plus being in a branch of service really helps in getting accepted. Not just because you have a lot of experience but also you dont need the congressional nomination for the application process. All I needed was a recommendation from my company commander.

  • @Joseph565112
    @Joseph565112 16 років тому

    Yes after I got my commission I requested 10 months over seas duty. I am from South Carolina and was supposed to go to Iraq with an artillery unit from my home state. However then I got word an MP unit in Iowa was also being deployed. Their 1stLt. Olson suffered a heart attack so I took his position and went with them. Despite my one bad experience its really not all that bad there. There plenty of reading time and most of the locals you meet are very friendly.

  • @Joseph565112
    @Joseph565112 15 років тому

    Yes, they do use elder students to assist and sometimes totally administer physical and military drill. I was not living in South Carolina at the time of my graduation from highschool. I was already in the Army at that time and got my unit commander to sign a "service connected nomination" I highly doubt I would have secured a Congressional nomination as most have to. You are correct about the Long Gray Line, there is only one. If you attend and academy you are part of it.

    Incredible young men & women who deserve our never-ending respect and admiration. Unfortunately for Army though in 5 years from now my son will be wearing the blue & gold of the USNA and he will be lighting up Army from outside the 3-point arc. GO NAVY BEAT ARMY.

    my best friend graduated from the citadel, and if you don't know you will have to take a ton of units. They offer you a great education, but nothing compared to the academics at west point. That says something in its self. West Point is where politicians are made.

    The best thing you can do is raise your GPA and get good scores on your SAT and ACT. Do sports at your highschool and do lots of stuff for your community. Basically the more stuff you can put on your resume the better.

    West Point is a place where you earn respect.
    It is not given to you.
    They are very hard on you at first because they have to weed out the ones who can't hack it from the ones who will make it.

    Meant 'any' academy. Also, I am not sure about the Citadel or VMI's system. However, I am confident they are similar if not identical in having "Cows" or "Firsties" teach much of the drill and physical activity programs. Under close supervision of course from the actual officer in charge of said department.

    im a 15 year old and i plan to go to West Point, ive wanted to go since i was 12 but i wanted to join the army as infantry since i was 5,both my parents were in the army and my mom's family were practically all in the army. I have a current gpa of about 3.8-3.9 and i participate in football and i plan to join clubs. ive researched this for quite a while and West Point is free because when you attend you join the army anyway so thats why you dont pay you just have to meet the requirements.
    sorry.

    makes you wonder how kids (and Im one of them 22, feel old though) join up. I mean with todays battlefield its so much harder to determine who's the enemy. Im joining the British army as a helicopter pilot something I really wanna do but I guess you gotta take it one step at a time. Hopefully I'll see your boys out there in a year or so.

    USMA plebe's perspective on this: even those who really love the military don't enjoy the stuff that plebes have to do. we do a lot of seemingly pointless stuff. but beyond that, people who say "man, four years of that, i could never do it" are off-base, because it's only one year of that. you're only dirt for one year...

    I've seen good academy grads and bad ones when it comes to the military. All that training don't amount to a hill of beans in combat if the individual just isn't cut out for combat. Those classroom tactics don't always work in the field.

    haha this year during basic here at USMA i had a squadmate who was horrible about muzzle awareness with her M4. she flagged so many people over the course of marksmanship training...once, i'm told, the safe was even off. she wrote a lot of letters to mothers explaining why she accidentally shot their sons. didn't get mailed, obviously...

    Does West Point have a cadre, as the Virginia Military Institute and The Citadel do? The cadre is an elite group of students, sophomores and up can join I believe, and they are hand-picked to administer the freshman system at VMI and The Citadel. Who administers the plebe system at West Point, and how does it work in comparison to the two Southern military colleges I mentioned?

  • @Ramiromasters

    The training consist of removing people's objections to authority in order to produce obedient troops. Later you can call up for an attack on another nation and instruct your military to call it "kinetic action" happens to work.

    Sorry I have been away. No I am not taking any kind of compensation etc. I am truly lucky. The bullet only grazed the bone. Mainly just tore muscle. I saw young kids like a Marine who was going to Germany to recover. He had half his jaw shot off. I am not going to go beggin for money when I was so fortunate. I mean no bone was broke and I barely have a limp. I am sorry about your comrade. My friend is a Drill Sergent at Fort Benning where you Rangers train. Its tough shit.

    I only meant it in the sense that even though you can get seriously hurt in Iraq at least you know what you have to do. Other than having prior military experience when I first got to USMA I didnt have a clue. All these people telling you rules, taking away some of your stuff from home and just basically making you feel helpless was the worst. Overall it is a good experience but at the time you feel like your gonna go crazy there.

    An interesting statement, but I have no political ambitions of any kind. I am a Southerner and a soldier, and attending VMI or the Citadel is a good way of reaffirming those things. I'll keep the 'ton of units' information in mind. A cadet must be as sharp in the classroom as he is on the parade ground.

    Well its just for a plebe that first year can get pretty tedious and pretty quick. Its just such a transition. From having your own free will to them taking it from you. Then with each passing year you get more and more freedom. You son/daughter will do just fine. They only accept those that can make it. If someone doesnt make it its not West Point's fault the kid had it in them. Its just a sign it wasnt right for that particular cadet.

  • @bigpyoopypants

    That's dumb considering most people probably want to go there so they can go into the military when they get out, and the military doesn't pay enough for it to cost that much imo. I could see if you got into Harvard or Yale after you got out, but just to go to West Point is kinda pricey.
    I guess it all evens out though, considering all the military academies are free.

    Being a knob seems hard, but if my best friend we called "twinkie boy" could do it then anyone can make it through. The cadre is a position many strive for at the citadel as well. If I could get some film uploaded I have personal video of the cadre rousing the cadets at dinner time. Rather funny. Good luck in your decision though. All those academies are wonderful. Much more exciting than boring old regular colleges. I wish I would of had the grades out of high school to attend.
