They don’t want problem solvers or people who are too intelligent they want people that won’t question their authority and that will die for whatever reason they told him to.
At that point in the video, they were learning drill and ceremonies (basic marching commands). When in formation and following drill commands, you don’t do whatever you want. You listen for the preparatory command and then get ready for the command of execution to do whatever facing movement is ordered.
@@sherbaum1985 just rewatched, looked liked what you said was true, but If I heard that and it resonated with me at this distance, what impact would it have with a new cadet, the rebuke or order we were given was “Do not anticipate the word of command!” Initiative is required at all levels of command, “A field marshal’s baton in every knapsack” indeed from my Corps during the First World War there was a lance corporal acting as Company Sergeant Major during a particularly heavy engagement
@@mickbourne3028 I mean the guy said "Wait for (all or the whole?) commands without doing things on initiative" which isn't really the same as what you said. I believe he's saying make sure you have all the information, and act according to that information instead of acting upon misunderstandings or incomplete orders. We are obviously both missing some important context to the situation, but what I assume happened, is he gave part of an order like "Put on your camelbacks and pick up....", some cadets started acting upon those orders preemptively by putting on their camelbacks, and he's saying "Wait for all commands without doing things on your own initiative", meaning wait for me to finish my mf sentence lmao. Plus, the cadets in the video were brand brand new, so taking orders and ingesting all of the information, an important aspect of life in the military, may be something that they've never learned. Also, these instructors are also cadets, so they obviously get some training in initiative throughout the process.

So many neat things you do like fire a weapon or multiple weapons do some crazy obstacle courses get lost in the woods and find your way out, do a lot of camping and running around. If I was younger I would do it all over again.
Fighting for the rich and losing your life, never. They use you for few years, then throw you out, if you survive. Lately I sat with a soldier in a bar for an hour, he had so much demons in his head from the ecperiences he had gone through, he told me he had more fun during that one hour then he had in two months. Be your own man, not someone else solider.
So according to your mentality, we disband all army forces, don't enlist any, so one day Russia wakes up and decides to attack us and force us to learn Russian and work for them? Sure in hell YOU would not volunteer to defend us.
I remember being a lowly E4 , we were preparing for deploying to Iraq in 2004, when we got a fresh Butter bar LT to be our platoon leader. He got into it with our staff Sgt and he was quickly put in his place by him and the company commander lol it was embarrassing. To his credit he apologized and told us he was wrong. I dont remember the argument all I remember was “ take your West Point diploma and shove it where the sun don’t shine” lol
The cons of being in military 1. You lose the right of being appeal on regular court house 2. One mistake say bye bye to all your training for years, regardless of what good thing you had done you will most likely dismiss if you messed up 3. You could hardly see your family and friends(basically giving up your life) 4. Constantly getting yelled
The haircut, the uniform, the drills etc. are all a part of stripping you of any individuality. The military is all about teamwork and your first lesson is that everyone is equally worthless. It's particularly funny that women got there by screaming for equality, and yet they are spared the training which is designed to make you equal !
I used to think these videos were cool, but after 4 years in and a tour in the Middle East I start to notice just how silly the whole cadet/basic training mindset is. The only reason I wouldn’t be able to make it in west point today is id have migraines from rolling my eyes too far back at all the dumb shit being said and done around me.
DooBick I didn’t necessarily say I was better than these guys. I can see why you might think that but I should stress that I did almost the exact same thing through basic training, so I’m not in a position to assume superiority. In fact, I don’t even think that the initial “basic training” environment is a bad thing since it gives every soldier something in common and standardized the way we communicate/work on certain tasks. My main point is that forcecomm emphasized how I need to think for myself and get out of the by the book mentality thus the way I’ve been conditioned in the actual military is in direct opposition to the very first lessons everybody coming off the streets who puts on that uniform learns. Hopefully that makes sense, I’m not making fun of these young soldiers just thinking back on my own experience with a little irony.
@Brandon Martin That's not any better when you enter the civilian world Sailor. I guess the added bonus of ramming your bunk mate wasn't incentive enough huh...
Brett Biederman....NO, the only reason you wouldn't make it to West Point is probably due to the fact your grades aren't 4.0 and you can't 'handle discipline. Most people like you think you can disobey the law.....it's sick. You think you're entitled, although in a different way.

Back in 1985 i joined the Army as a 19E. ONSUT at Ft Knox and then off to Ft Stewart, GA for my first duty station. I was there about 2 months when I got a letter through the unit ordering me to attend a meeting on post. It was a meeting about attending the West Point Prepatory School, at the time in Ft Monmouth, NJ. I kick myself for not completing the paperwork and see if I could gain acceptance to West Point. At the time I believe I was identified due to my high ASFAB score. If I could go back to my 18 year old self, I'd impress upon him how beneficial West Point could be in a future he could not possibly imagine.
I'm a Doctor, so that means I survived medical school mostly intact. I look at what these kids go through, and I am in awe. They have my utmost respect. A part of me wishes I too was part of a similar experience, but that'll have to be in another life...
Former Marine here with a Naval Academy story. I had a buddy who went to Annapolis. He was a Sergeant who had done three combat tours in Iraq when he got his Academy appointment. He got in trouble initially at the USNA for laughing in the faces of the upperclassmen who tried to “stress” him by yelling or making him exercise. My buddy was a Bronze Star winner, had seen friends of his die, and no two ways to say it, killed guys in combat. The idea of him getting stressed by some pimply 20 year old is ridiculous. The good news is one of the senior officers pulled him aside and said look, I understand where you came from and what you’ve done but please, just go along to get along and graduate. My buddy did, successfully graduated, and is now an infantry company commander. After that conversation with the CO, though, the attempts to “stress” my friend went down significantly. Lol
I was put on CST support for the westpoint cadets and from what I saw the prior service cadets were treated like gods. No upperclassmen tried to yell at them because most of them went to Afghanistan and Iraq. Met a new cadet there that completed 3 tours in Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan. Literally every theater the war on terror was fought in
well the training is designed for 18 year olds straight out of high school, most with inflated egos from a comfy civilian life and being top of their class.
Tbh he probably had a tougher time in boot camp than the academy gives the cadets with regards to "infliction of stress" so even without actual combat rotations he'd have had some serious difficult. A DI or DS (at least when I went through army basic in 05 not so much today...) was infinitely more intimidating
Thamometer As someone who just went through cadet basic training at West Point, I’ll tell you it’s actually very good leadership experience for the 1st and 2nd class cadets. It’s not just yelling, though there is a shitload of that too, but also lots of good training for everyone involved
Colonel Deborah has a perfect and fluent English and also a good diction. I've never gone to an academy to study English, because what I've learned is listening to music, watching videos, reading web pages and chatting with some friends from other countries on facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Telegram. I could easily write what she says in this video, I love it when a person speaks perfect English like that, it's a luxury to hear her speak . IMHO!
Ever serve with a west pointer? I had the not so great privilege, book smart yes real world not so much. It's like working with an entitled child who at every opportunity tells you they went to West Point...
Frank Castle Maybe you should have tried to learn from them instead of dismissing them as just "book smart." They've trained for four years at the finest military institution in the world, and many go on to become graduates of Ranger School
Man, 4 years of training, 5 years required service after that with an additional 3 in the Reserves. I was enlisted for 4 years, and was DONE with the life after that, I couldn't imagine putting 12 years of my life into service.
Well it's all relative. The four years are training and also one of the best educations in the country which really opens doors after separation from the military. It's 3 years in the individual ready reserve, not the Reserves, which means you can be called back into service due to a war, but don't do the weekend per month and two weeks per year of drill. I had classmates pulled back in for Iraq/Afghanistan since they got out at 5 years and were still in the 8 year window. At 45, I can't imagine having gone anywhere else. When I was 20, I wished I was enjoying the normal college experience. As I said, it's all relative.
@@robertsabo3247 Ummm, that sometimes applies to people enlisting in the military, but not West Point cadets. People who get accepted into West Point graduate at the top of their high school class and have high SAT/ACT scores. It's an elite institution and the education is more or less equivalent to Ivy League schools depending on factors like major selection. In my humble opinion, it's a more well rounded education than one would get from Harvard or Yale because you are required to minor in an engineering discipline and also possess the physical and leadership aspects which aren't required at practically every other college or university. The whole officer training system is wrong. How are you going to let some brat college kid with zero combat experience outrank a sergeant who has served in combat?
Don S that’s not how it works in practice, and least in any half decent unit. If a fresh LT let it go to his head then his superior officer or a Sergeant Major for example would be quick to reprimand them, their appointment position matters more than their actual rank, what I mean is a Regimental Sergeant Major has the respect of every officer up to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, who’s basically his direct boss, even though technically every rank of officer outranks him, ditto for a Company Sergeant Major and a Major, they’re in equivalent appointments in the level of the unit. And most officers know that while they plan and keep things organised their right arm comes in the form of NCO’s
Don S it’s worked for centuries from McArthur, Patton, McChrystal, McMaster and thousands upon thousands of officers who were West Point Graduates! All officers whether ROTC, AFROTC, NROTC leads enlisted regardless of rank! Ge rover your shock it works!

Plus, the cadets in the video were brand brand new, so taking orders and ingesting all of the information, an important aspect of life in the military, may be something that they've never learned. Also, these instructors are also cadets, so they obviously get some training in initiative throughout the process.

Brett Biederman Counter argument, The Military isn’t really for people who roll their eyes at authority and think they are better than others.

This tracks with what I saw from prior service guys in my Cadet company.
Tbh he probably had a tougher time in boot camp than the academy gives the cadets with regards to "infliction of stress" so even without actual combat rotations he'd have had some serious difficult. A DI or DS (at least when I went through army basic in 05 not so much today...) was infinitely more intimidating

They dont outrank. A good lt listens to his nco and he makes the decisions. The nco makes sure its executed.
