  • Hey guys - Today on the road trip from George we take a comparative look at the two close popular beaches, namely Herolds Bay and Victoria Bay or Vic bay.
Herolds bay is named after the first Dutch Reformed minister of George, Tobias Johannes Herold (1812-1823). Herolds Bay make a bit of a longer road trip being 25 kilometers from George but offers a much larger beach, two wonderful tide pools and lots of rock pools to look for sea creatures in. It has a paved braai area that is open from 8am to 6pm. Herolds bay does have its own Dutch reformed church and Roman Catholic Chapel, Stella Maris. Herolds bay is a community of mainly upmarket homes rented out as holiday accomodation and thus draws a slightly more well off holiday makers.
Victoria bay named after Queen Victoria is but a 10km road trip from George past the Garden Route Mall. It is a popular beach for surfers, consisting of a right hand reef-like wave which rolls over small boulder-like rocks for about 200m. District and National surf competitions are often held at Vic Bay and despite its small size, Vic Bay is a well-known and much-visited spot. The eastern side of the bay consists of rocks, flanked briefly by a concrete wall built to prevent erosion of the slope. There is a small cave often used by fishermen as shelter. The end of the eastern side is known as Kabeljou Bank, named after the large Cob which are often line-caught from the rocks. A number of camp sites overlook the bay and clusters of holiday chalets are situated nearby, making it a popular holiday destination during the summer and Easter holiday periods. The grassy area above the beach has braai facilities and a small shop and restaurant are situated at the top of the beach road. A concrete jetty, flanked by a sandy-bottomed rock pool, looks out across the bay and is a popular place for watching the surfers and for fishing. The original jetty, given to the bay by the original owner of what is now The Waves B&B, was severely damaged during storms and was replaced by a larger one during the early 1990s.
Let me know which place you prefer to visit and where your road trip leads you, here in George in the Western Cape of South Africa we love our tourists, spend some time to travel to South Africa and enjoy the sun on our wonderful beaches.

Herolds Bay is very nice, you can drive right to the beach and have quick easy access to your car. Even though it is a big beach, at high tide it can get completely covered. There are deep drop-offs when you enter the water and the bay is full of sandbanks that shift making the bay a little unpredictable. Also there are strong rips running out on the far left by the cliffs and also running from left to right across the bay quite close to shore. It gets quite rough even on a smaller swell. Vic bay does get crowded for its size. The bay is stunning and regularly gives good surfing waves for all ranges of ability. The rips change all the time and caution must be taken, many people (myself included) have been caught by a rip close to the tidal pool. The other side of the bay also must be treated with care.... Stay in the middle! Both are beautiful bays
