2012 Odyssey... It all started with watching your front pad video. Since then it's rolled to this transmission fluid change, an oil change, servicing my wife's 2016 Fit, and giving me the confidence to work on my old 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee! Thank you for your confidence inspiring well explained postings! You are awesome!
Thanks Dial2Fast! This is my third video of yours. I can now easily change the two filters and the transmission fluid. Good audio and you show the points of interest with light. Seems like a small thing, but it's a big thing. Really appreciate your videos!!
Kathy Barbieri It's always nice to get feedback from people who appreciate the effort that goes into making a good video. I am glad my videos have helped you. Thanks!
Great tip on the tube from Home Depot to make that funnel access easy, without that you need to fool around with the airbox, your method is more flexible and requires less tear down. GREAT VIDEO
Mine has 230K miles on it. It think it's time for a change lol. The D is flashing but the car seems to drive fine other than that D flashing. Thanks for the video!
So that's maybe three of these atf quarts then? If it's 3.3 USqt.. how many of these containers do I need to top it off. Lmk please. Thanks. Please reply to me ASAP I need to do mines soon.
Thanks for the video. Just a bit about changing the oil intervals. I bought my 2005 Odyssey used with 73000 miles. Have no idea if and when they changed the oil but I now have 200000 miles on it and have never changed the trani oil and it still works perfect. Not suggesting not to change the oil to everyone just don't panic about the exact number of miles.
Yeah, I was in the same boat as you. Bought my 2005 when it had almost the same mileage. Was young and dumb and never thought to check the fluid. By the time I did, at about 120k it was black as sin. I knew (or thought) I screwed up, but knew it was best to leave it. Just sold the van a few days ago with 235k on it. Still drives and shifts great. Not that I'm recommending never servicing your tranny, but if you neglect it like I did early on, might as well ride that baby into the sunset!
Just an FYI, I believe that transmission holds vacuum so no matter how many times you open that 17mm fill bolt, it’s going to be hard and “pop”. Best to open it when drain plug is off I assume but I’m no mechanic.
Each time you drain it, 60% of the old fluids remains. So the first change leaves 60%; the second change leaves 60% of 60% = 36%; third change leaves 60% of 36% = 21.6%; fourth change leaves 60% of 21.6% = 12.96% ; then 7.8% ; then 4.7%; then 2.8%; 1.7%; 1.0% remains after 9th fluid drain fill...
Tip to avoid regret: Before removing fill bolt, jam cloths around the area in case you drop the bolt. Dropped mine and never found it again! Had to buy from dealer.
Gracias por el video, muy demostrativo. ¿Cuál es el torque que se debe aplicar al tornillo que se quita para drenar el aceite de transmisión? Y ¿Cuál es el torque de apriete del tornillo donde se coloca el aceite de transmisión? Saludos
Yes the ATF isn't too old, but that's why I can do 1 drain and fill. If you wait too long then you really need to do 3 drain and fills which equates to almost a complete flush.
dial2fast would you say every other oils change and drop the transmission oil as well? I like no e clear like yours. Might as well since we are there anyways.
Do you think that we can do 3 drain and fills to any car to perform almost a complete flush? I want to do it to a Toyota Tundra. On a you tube video they disconnect a cooler hose, they do something on the computer sistem....etc. At the end they had to turn off the checking engine... Too much!
Haven't changed the transmission fluid in my mom's 2007 Odyssey. It has over 95,000 miles so it's definitely worth changing the fluid. For some reason, the color of the existing fluid is a nice dark red. Maybe the dealer did change it. Still, definitely time to change it.
If you want affordable, first 2 places come to mind is Sears and also Harbor Freight (if there is one near you). I have both 1/2" and 3/8" which I purchased at Canadian Tire store in Canada many years back. I also have 1/2" and 3/8" from Harbor Freight. All work fine. Main thing is to take care of it and don't drop it.
I remove the drain plug take out 4 plus quarts put back what I took out c (Castro trans mix) fill up by the dip stick hole all good. Been doing it for years. Do that every year till it's nice and rose color then I stop....only do this for friends and family.
Great Job on explaining this process but when I changed the trans fluid on 7/6/14 she took all four quarts on my 2009 Honda odyssey not the 3.3 as you explained
I believe the fluid level must be checked with the #Odyssey in P Park, at operating temperature and idling. If you check when the car is off you will not see the correct level. Also, when pulling up the dipstick, look at both sides of it, one side may be very clear where the level is and the other side may look spotty and vague and overfill 💪 Awesome video
According to the owner's manual that came with my 2010 Honda Odyssey it says to warm up the transmission and engine and then shut the engine off. Wait at least 60 seconds but no longer than 90 seconds to check the transmission fluid with the engine off and the vehicle in park.
I highly doubt the ATF DW1 is the culprit here. If there is a long period where the ATF fluid was not changed out, some damage may have already been done. Putting in new fluid that has more lubricating properties may reveal the issue. You should get it checked out by a transmission shop.
Thanks Master. Should be the same part for the 2005 - 2007 ODY Actually most of the 2008-2010 parts are compatible. Even the lower control arms and the front grill replacing the front bumper and hood. I'll order the front bumper and hood ti change the front look of my 2006 since the main headlights are the same. Also I'm looking forward to install Honda Pilot brake rotors on my ody since they are larger but I'll need to replace the break calipers as well. The guys at Honda Birmingham Alabama advised this: The ody is a nice ride so long you know which mods to do on it.
I can't imagine a more perfect instructional video. You must be a tiny, tiny person to be able to crawl under your Odyssey without jacking it up or running it up a ramp. Such skinniness is long ago in my past. And how much ATF did come out? It sure looked like more than 3.3 quarts. I believe the transmission holds about 10 quarts. I wonder if I ran the driver's side wheels up a ramp if that would tilt the transmission enough to allow even more fluid to come out? I'll have to give that a try in a couple days when I do the job.
The Odyssey in the video is up on drive-on ramps. I bought a pair from Harbor Freight. I have the same question, if the Ody front end is raised w/ rear on ground, does this influence quantity (less of a complete pan drain) of fluid drained?
@@gkorenek With front tires on ramps and rear tires on the ground that may be the ONLY way you can reach the drain plugs. I just did the engine oil drain and filter replacement which is all near to the transmission drain plug. It was kind of roomy with the front tires up on the ramps. Without ramps it would be a tight fit. You'd need to be real skinny with long arms.
@@STBRetired1 Yes! I'm going to do the AT fluid "drain and fill" with the drive-on ramps at the front. I'm going to use Valvoline Max Life AT fluid. Also would use ramps to do oil change too. I've been using local oil change services (Jiffy Lube, Honda Dealership, etc.) for engine oil and filter changes, and mechanic shop & Honda dealership for ATF fluid drain and fill. I want to start doing the ATF fluid service myself to save some $$. I have the AT drain plug crush washers on order, when they come in (soon) I'm going to do the service myself as in the video. Also need to put together the funnel with tubing to reach the fill plug. Bought a torque wrench as in the video too just to get all the plugs back in and torqued to specs!
@@gkorenek I was all set to do the transmission fluid drain and went over to WalMart to get some Valvoline MaxLife. The website said they had it in stock but the shelves were empty. I was not a happy camper. I checked with Advance Auto and AutoZone and they want $ 10 more PER gallon. So, I ordered it online at WalMart and will have it delivered in two days - right when the rain starts.
@@STBRetired1 I in Walmart, I had to really look for the MaxLife ATF, there were only 3 "jugs" (gallon containers) of it hiding amongst many jugs of motor oil. I checked Walmart price vs Amazon price, was the same. So I went home with a jug. At Walmart I also purchased the oil (fluid) catch drain container, where you can easily pour out the captured fluid into another container for recycling.
Hi, great video, but had a few questions - do u replace the atf filler washer also and if so, is it the same washer part as the drain bolt washer? Also should u shift the tran gears for 30 sec each after the fill and should it be on level ground? Thanks
The filter is deep inside the transmission and is not reachable without taking out the engine AND transmission and then taking apart the transmission. Instead, Honda just wants you to "frequently" change the fluid so the filter doesn't get clogged up.
Thank you for taking the time to make and share this video. Quite helpful indeed! Could you offer a recommendation on an affordable torque wrench by any chance, or even the name of the one you use. I'd really like one that clicks at the set torque if possible. Thank you again!
Thank you for making this video. I have a 2012 Honda Odyssey, is the process very similar or are there any changes on draining and refilling the transmission fluid?
dial2fast Hi, i have a 2012 too and i see the same fill bolt below the brake fluid that is labeled "ATF" ... does that mean i can just remove that like your video and fill from there? looks pretty similar. just want to confirm before i do it and no one has made a video for the 2011- present yet. thanks!
True true, back in the day when I was first learning about cars, my uncle told me he didn't need to change the oil in his car only the filter. He said he burned enough oil and replaced enough a little bit at a time everyday!
Thankyou for uploading this video. I have a 2006 Honda Elysion here in the UK, and have had a slight whirring noise from gear box. I know the oddysey and elysion are quite similar. Would the ATF be suitable for my car? I cant find a user manual for my car in english translation either. 👍🇬🇧
You should contact your Honda dealers parts department and ask them the proper fluid to use for your Honda car. They will tell you even if you don't have then service it.
Hi there... congrats; nice and clear video! I have a doubt; does this Tranny has any kind of filter? I've been looking for it on the Internet and it seems that there is a cylindrical one but I'm not pretty sure if it really needs to be changed or not and where it is located. Thanks in advance for your insights!
dial2fast Thanks for your promp answer... I just had the chance to read an official Honda blog and they said that from 2007 to 2010, Odyssey's transmission was changed and the new Tranny has a non serviceable filter inside its body.
Great video. I am guessing you could fill as well through dipstick hole too? May not fill as fast but same end result? You don't have to have that big extension either.
I just did another service last week, and looking at that dip stick hole, it's very small, and it will take so much more time to go that route. But yes, you can fill it that way if you want.
on most hondas including accords its the same thing, drain from bottom 3/8th bolt, put bolt back on. refill atf about 3.3 quarts, done. you saved about $60. buy atf from walmart, dw1 is a ripoff. valvoline maxlife or redline d6 or d4 or amsoil multi vehicle premium designed to be 5-10x better than oem atf. maxlife is only $5 quart if your walmart has it, o'reilly's has a 1 gallon one for $26
You should mention that a simple drain and fill replaces 3.3 of 10.5 liters of transmission fluid. For a more complete change you will need to drain the cooler?
Good video. Pretty much the same steps on my 05. One additional suggestion. I found it easier to get to the filler plug if I removed the plastic cover on the top of the engine. I also spent a good half hour trying the get the fill plug off. Breaker bar is a must have for this job. Also, never ever ever use anything other than Honda transmission fluid. It's expensive but it's cheaper then buying a new tranny if you use something else. Same is true for Honda break pads for what it's worth.
Lol my mother bought her friend's used Oddyssey and theres no records of the tranny fluid ever being changed so with 109k miles I'm really worried but other than that it drives really well.

A drain/refill will change only 40%, so I would repeat it in a week after the first change in order to replace about 70% actually.
Actually the Honda fluid is so high priced.
That'll replace closer to 64%
Each time you drain it, 60% of the old fluids remains.

Great video. I am guessing you could fill as well through dipstick hole too? May not fill as fast but same end result? You don't have to have that big extension either.
I just did another service last week, and looking at that dip stick hole, it's very small, and it will take so much more time to go that route. But yes, you can fill it that way if you want.
condor5635 i just changeg mine and the filled through the dipstick hole it went pretty fast
thanks a lot
Thanks, nice video..
Hi, what about the filter? How do you replace the gearbox oil filter?
Can I use the link to your video in the Honda Odyssey facebook group page? I want to have DIY links in the pinned post.
Thank you!
HonDo you have a video showing the ATF filter replacement on the 2007 Honda Odyssey ?
on most hondas including accords its the same thing, drain from bottom 3/8th bolt, put bolt back on. refill atf about 3.3 quarts, done. you saved about $60. buy atf from walmart, dw1 is a ripoff. valvoline maxlife or redline d6 or d4 or amsoil multi vehicle premium designed to be 5-10x better than oem atf. maxlife is only $5 quart if your walmart has it, o'reilly's has a 1 gallon one for $26
so the motor have to be off during the transmission fluid check? I drain 1 quarter trying to get the level with the motor running : )
how many bottles or gallons do I need to change the oil in the transmission. thanks.
You should mention that a simple drain and fill replaces 3.3 of 10.5 liters of transmission fluid. For a more complete change you will need to drain the cooler?
Great shit it worked
Hi is this the same For a 2012 my has 128k a I don’t think I had be change Should I do it with the flush or just Drain and refill please let me know
How many gallons di you put exactly
Lol my mother bought her friend's used Oddyssey and theres no records of the tranny fluid ever being changed so with 109k miles I'm really worried but other than that it drives really well.
Doesn't it have a transmission filter?
mitzvah torah . It does not have a filter.
