What a wonderful glimpse into that long ago world! It’s clear that Dave made a crucial contribution in those early days. His gentleness and kindness set a tone that gave the show its warmth and character in a way many writers would not have been able to grasp conceptually. Laughter has a million different inflections- and The MONKEES got it right for millions of young people who needed a place to grow up with.
This is an exceptional interview! Dave Evans is a very good choice, and an extremely articulate man. This was a true pleasure to watch and listen to. Well done!
Great interview! The bookend comments about Davy is very cool. It's unfortunate that Bob & Burt lost interest along the way and basically thought of The Monkees as a stepping stone & dollar signs. Glad Dave Evans sent us out on a high note with The Frodis Caper!
What a great video! So many fun and interesting stories Dave Evans was able to share. Also, the interviewer was fantastic. He asked the best questions and allowed the screenwriter to give detailed answers without annoyingly interrupting like many interviewers do.
Very good interview with good questions/more detail oriented than most, and more wide-ranging. Thanks! (I worked on that Eldorado to the Moon video that Bill Dear and Michael did...IN fact, I was the one who turned Bill onto Michael ---most directly through screening a 16 print of HEAD I'd rented at his house in Michigan in '71 or '72. ) This guy is very cool, and very interesting to listen to. Certainly sounds like he was absorbing everything that was going on around him at the time. Spielberg I think by the time of The Monkees had directed a pretty corny short about hitch-hiking hippies which we'd seen at some film festival in the 60's. It felt very inauthentic, like a "Hollywood square" trying to capture the whole counter-culture thing while not really being part of if. Sorry. We all thought it pretty cringey. I think The Monkees probably picked up on that too. They weren't really his "thing".
There's an theme in many Monkees scripts about the guys being kind-hearted and helping others like Rose Marie's "Milly Rudnick", the kid in the "Gift Horse" episode, etc.....just being "good guys" in society. This interview reveals where some of that was sourced: in the mind of Dave Evans. I have a copy of the "Some Like It Lukewarm" script I bought in Hollywood decades ago....have to find it and see if Dave was one of the writers for that episode. Maybe I stashed it under my Freeble Energizer.
Very fascinating, great interview with Dave Evans. Thank you. How creepy! Charles Manson, just the mention of his name and everything went haywire. A lot like the Bugliosi moment in court when his watch froze. I don’t believe in stuff like that but…that is creepy. Manson may have been charismatic, but he was certifiably insane!
I just wanted you to know that I shared (or maybe reshared, since I'm late to the Facebook groups thing) your channel with all the Monkee groups over there! Here's to many, many more episodes in the new year, and beyond!
What I learned from this interview is that Davy was the nice guy who was most professional in his job. He was subtly sabotaged, because it was supposed to be his series, but that wonderful guy just went along, always giving it his all. They all shot themselves in the foot when they let the series slide to concentrate on proving that they were worthy to be called a rock group. I blame that on Mike Nesmith. The series could have run for several seasons, with the albums interspersed, if the producers and the Monkees had not set out to alienate their audience with the weird movie and the 'psychedelic garbage.
I saw Peter in an old Ironside playing guitar in a band. His hair was darker. So he had some tv experience. I remember having a Nehru jacket and Beatle boots.
I only use natural light and the sun was setting during the interview, so, along with the strange cut-off of the Manson story, it seems the lighting synced along as well! Any way ,the focus of the show is the guest, not myself. Thanks for the comment.
@@TheMonkeesPadPODCAST it takes the focus off the guest if a serial killer appears to be interviewing him! 🤣🤣🤣 (might wanna ask a friend to watch, for another opinion)
Wonderful interview of a really genuine and lovely man. My only critique is that I wish JR would respond back to the person who’ he is interviewing a little bit more and not just fire questions at them.
Nicholson was collaborating with Rafelson; Head, Easy Rider, Five Easy Pieces. Writing sessions for Head started in 1967 during the latter time of the TV show-era
That's an actual transcendental meditation chant. I've done a bit of research on meditation and I encountered the chant, or mantra, a couple times. I was surprised to recognize it from the Monkees. I wonder which one thought to use the mantra? I suspect either Peter or Micky.
Wow a Twilight Zone has a giant eye looking at 2 space guys! Communication take over earth! Teen star from Donna Reed ( Fabrays) falling in love with one.

my view exactly...life imitating art? bizarre coincidence? strange, but true!
Thank You Dave for our Work on the Mpnkees
This is really a great series of interviews
Thanks for this great interview -- it was so fun getting to know Dave Evans. His sentiments are very touching.
26:30 The "Office" was on the *FIRST FLOOR,* one level up from *GROUND FLOOR!*
I am so loving what I am seeing... Keep these coming... This is better then any book or film on the Monkees... This interview is GOLDEN....

Great interview, hi Dave!
Fabulous interview.
Fascinating interview!
This is great to see. First-rate. Keep up the good work.

I somehow doubt that was really Peter..more likely a look-alike...Ironside was not among his TV credits
comment to JR: maybe more lighting around you? the darkness makes it a little creepy, esp when dave was speaking about manson (lol)!
(btw, i clicked Like, not Dislike, so i'm not one of those)

Why did Jack Nicholson have an office as mentioned several times? Why was he so important!?
Oh he was a friend of director.
Nicholson was collaborating with Rafelson; Head, Easy Rider, Five Easy Pieces. Writing sessions for Head started in 1967 during the latter time of the TV show-era
At least the Monkees did not have to go through Steven Spielbergs west side story 😂
1968 Manson meeting? Can Evans get any more specific on the date?
Wonder what was Dave Evan’s inspiration for including the Namu Myoho Renge Kyo chant bit in Frodis Caper.
I did ask him that, but he could not recall...

Is the interviewer the channel owner in this case?
yes
How bizarre about the mention of Manson! 😬
Wow....How BIG is that pencil?....
JR that camera my man.... :o

What drugs have you been doing that would make you come up with something like that? Micky Dolenz directed that episode after reading the credits.
Micki worth the ford's caper
300 !
