Boy I wish I had been home schooled. Part of my life I grew up in a country setting in PA and then due to lack of work my Dad moved us to suburbia in NJ. We all hated it! We were country kids thrown into a situation that in all honesty we never adapted to. As for socialization it did NOT help us in any way, in fact I believe it hindered us. The first day of school in suburbia someone said to my brother "you're from the sticks". That comment made him feel like such an outcast he went from a well rounded country kid to an extremely quiet kid. As for me, I never ever felt like I fit in, nor did my sister. Personally I think the education that you are providing your children learning sustainability goes far beyond what they would learn attending public school. Kudos to you both to what I believe is a great decision!

I'm from southern PA, born and raised hillbilly and proud of it. We were raised on how to live off the land and now teaching my children to do the same. We homeschool also.

I homeschooled my 3 children through graduation. My motto was to teach my children how to teach themselves so that they would have a life long desire to learn and know how to do it. We did a lot of the life skills that most kids are not taught.

Abeka has such a SOLID math program! I moved to other curriculum for science and history in highschool to be a bit less textbooky. The advantage of homeschooling is CHOOSING who your kids socialize with. They aren't stuck with the mean kids. I think that the real life ability to be comfoywith all ages, not just your own, is such a huge advantage to our kids!

I home-schooled with ABeka for the first 7 years, three daughters, and ABeka is the best if you are interested in true education. When they got to jr high, I went to Saxon mathematics due to the way they present algebra. I kept them in ABeka for the rest, esp science and history. My baby is 40 this year, all three went on to great careers, nurse, director in a gov. contractor company,, and police dept. Now they are 1. homesteader, 2. business owner,, 3 song-writer/singer. Success!

Your children are blessed to be able to learn the academic subjects, but also life skills that will benefit them even more throughout their life. The work ethic and values you are teaching them will never be taught in public schools. Farm and homestead life has always had to be flexible, and you seem to have your priorities straight. Even though this is your business, I appreciate that you bring valuable but fun content and look at the positive things and blessings in life. I wish you every success and happiness.

But what happens if they grow up not to continue on the farm business? I have an uncle who paid over $100k for his son to go to an Ivy League high school in California. Guess what? He’s graduating this month and will be a firefighter. Now all that money was not used to go to an Ivy League college. We just never know the direction our childcare will go in and that’s okay. I think it’s great to expose your kids to many different things in life.

I found y’all’s channel last week and I love you guys... I say I love you too when you sign off. As a second generation homeschooler momma I want to encourage you, whatever curriculum you use always remember it’s a tool in your hand and not your master. We too left Abeka video because I saw the same frustration with my kids that I had as high school homeschooler doing the Abeka videos. With that said Abeka as a curriculum is amazing. If he enjoys the Abeka math it’s a great base all the way through high school. It’s what I use. If your son loves math and is cruising through Abeka and would enjoy “more” math Saxon is another great spiral curriculum. Sounds like what you are doing is working for you. We also love to collect curriculum books so that when a curiosity arises about history science etc we have resources to dig in. Best of luck and look forward to following on your homesteading journey.

So glad I am not the only one who never knows what we are really doing for home school! We used Khan this past year for most of it. It is hit or miss for us. We are in AL and we are allowed to do whatever we want for schoolwork. We do traditional reading and math lessons. We do science outside! Between gardens, greenhouse, animals, with preserving and cooking we have that covered and then some!!! Our daughter is well socialized as well. Just ideas for some: ours goes to church regular(her choice), pageants (yes she wins money!), and 4-H. She has made many life long friends across the US. Husband is home with her during day. We have small engine business. We do schoolwork at night. ~Billie-Jo and Paisley

Hi Guys - Bobbi Caton here, Homeschool mom from way back :) I started with Abeka ( this was over 30 yrs ago :) ) I supplemented with life skills, recipes are awesome for reading, math and comprehension. My children are all OK! My son is 46 and is in law enforcement. one daughter is 43 the mother of 11 (all natural) and homeschools her children and the baby is 42 and a medical assistant - They have all done well but I will say it takes a village. My dad was a teacher and did my testing (required in our state) there were other people that helped too. I found a retired music teacher that did a class for our children and others and they were able to learn an instrument. I took my children to businesses they had interested in maybe becoming, like a veterinarian. There are so many things you can do without just doing book work - hands on is great! You are doing a great job keep it up!
    God Bless you

I am so blessed to have been able to help homeschool my two granddaughters. My daughter-in-law chose the curriculum, so I can't help you there but both girls had individual lessons because of their learning styles. I was their teacher 3 days a wekk and my DIL was for two days a week. There were homeschool group activities that we could participate in for socializing. We even had graduation and prom events. Social interaction in regular school is not what people think it is. This is the greater part of being bullied, teased relentlessly, and learning things you personally object to. School should be about learning and not indoctrination. Many teachers subject their students to ideas and expect the students to accept these ideas as fact. Children should not have to grapple with the opinions of adults that differ from family values. I am wholeheartedly for homeschool learning because it allows the children freedom to express their ideas in a safe environment where there isn't criticism from peers and adults. I applaud you for the hard work you do and in teaching your children family values through love and understanding.

One thing I keep on my table right beside the salt and pepper is what I call my dried salad. I dehydrate a lot of stuff, especially wild greens. I also dehydrate any bits of lettuces that have seen better days, but are still good. Celery tops, outside cabbage leaves, kale, greens of any kind, especially the ones that would go to waste. I DO NOT add in oniony things for this! When they are bone dry, I grind them as fine as I can. I store them in a recycled parmesan cheese jar, so I can keep it as air tight s possible. I sprinkle a little of this on literally everything I eat, even dessert. If it sets on something a while, it will start rehydrating and you can start to taste it. If it's only sprinkled on at the last minute, there is zero taste and no mouth feel, even on ice cream! It rehydrates and digests as it travels through your gut gifting me with loads of good vitamins and minerals.

I really enjoyed this Friday talk...I'm not a 'homesteader' (too old now, and missed my shot 50 years ago as a uppity city girl, when I decided to divorce my then 'farmer' husband...ah, hindsight!), but I digress. I watch several homestead family video channels and Stiver's Homestead is always at the top of my list. Why? Because the melancholy state of mind it puts me in when I'm watching, but mostly because it gives me such great hope for the future of our country. If we didn't have families like Zach & Jen's, Justin & Rebecca Rhodes, Deep South Homestead, Living Traditions Homestead, Simple Living Alaska, the Fit Farmer and many others, I shudder to think of how any of us will learn to manage if things ever really go farther south, so-to-speak.
I've never been a fan of 'reality TV' because there's always something so fake that comes through in the dialog (much of which is scripted). But watching the reality of daily farm life, from milking the goats or the cow, to planting the garden and canning in the kitchen (or outdoors), is so satisfying and entertaining. Most of the peopleI watch have a way of drawing the viewer in, and as for me, it almost feels as if I'm a distant member of the family...and, as a grandmother, and now, having watched for the past several years, I'm finding it to be so cool to watch the children grow up in what I consider the most ideal environment and circumstance.
Allowing good people to profit from UA-cam is a great thing and I hope it continues on for a long time to come.

I didn’t know “unschoolers” was a thing lol. I’m old, my 4th and youngest child is a senior now. I so wish I had homeschooled all my kids, or at least any of my kids… though I have to say, the past few years really have been mostly homeschool. I am encouraging all my babies to homeschool their babies, we’ll see. Kudos to y’all.

I work with an online school, and I have found that students who are home schooled or works online, are more advanced than others. That's amazing with Wyatt. I love that he gets real life skills. That will work Im his favor.

My biggest regret is not homeschooling sooner. We use different pieces & parts of curriculum & make our own. That's the great thing about homeschool. We are loving IEW for language arts. The Key To math series is awesome also... very straightforward. Kinda old school. 😀

I highly recommend looking into power homeschool (or Acellus if you want something accredited, same curriculum) it’s SO good! They have robotics, engineering, etc. The kids love it so much. We totally recommend it. My daughter is advanced (4th grade) and you have total control of picking classes. My high schoolers also love it. They will all graduate early, which is awesome. We love that it’s small chunks, with the best online teachers. And it’s relatively hands off. I’m there to monitor, help when needed, but the kids really absorb the information, so they rarely need help. This school is totally self paced and my kids started at the end of September and they were done for the year in March, working like 4 hrs at most per day. They took mental health days, vacations, etc… as well.
Public school is so bad now. The kids’ day is full of bullying, and social distractions. Homeschooling is just so much better. My oldest is in college and he was in public school. He wishes he had been homeschool, lol. Anyway, definitely look into it! -Sara

I homeschooled my kids back in the 80s. I loved it. I would write down weekly assignments and the kids could work at their pace. I used several curriculums and got involved with Christian homeschoolers and we did field trips as well as a day when we had a recreational director and the parents were able to discuss ideas about how to teach subjects. Loved it. Kids are more rounded who are homeschooled.

My Mom made canned meat as I grew up. When I was married, and as a young mother, I took her meat jars with us on camping trips. Along with sides, the meat and juices were so good when no storage available.my meat canned isn’t quite the same flavor. I don’t know why unless she seasoned it differently😢. But my jams are good. My plan with the garden this year is to can much more and the trend to keeping up because store shelves and costs being awful seems smart.

I homeschooled both my kids. They didn't learn the same way. I would keep him on Abeka since he does well with it. I was told it is more advanced so switching might cause problems. One of mine did good with curriculums but my daughter is a visual learner and did better with hands on schooling.

Hi Jen & Zack, I am very thankful for your videos. I taught school in a small Christian school for 5 years and loved it! What I learned was that what you plan to do on any given day in the best case scenario is anywhere from 50-75% planned and the other is life learning at it’s best! We used ABEKA and Bob Jones curriculum. The projects we did were inspired by what motivated the kids to want to learn and dig deeper! My first year one girl who was in 4H she brought her Murray McMurray catalog to school and shared about all the different breeds of chickens she was interested in and why! When I shared with a friend that I was considering hatching eggs for the kids to experience she said she had an incubator and would I like to borrow it! A farmer who I asked if if his eggs were fertile donated the eggs, my dear friend the “Chicken Lady” came in to show us how to candle the eggs. She was shocked to see we had so many “good eggs”! We were blessed to hatch 95% of the eggs right in the classroom! What fun we had! The kids named them and I took them home! I have loved chickens ever since! We did a lot of food based projects as well and it was a blessing for us all! I pray more parents do what you are doing and learn right along with their children! At 63 I very much consider myself a life-long learner, my dad was and lived a content life for 96 years! God bless your family, your plans for the future and looking forward to watching it all unfold before my eyes! 🥹🥲🤣😆🤪🥰 keep up the good work! 🙏💖🙏

Our family uses Master Books curriculum and we love it! It is very “open and go”, so I don’t have to do any prep before the school day. Also, we are able to finish in just a couple of hours and the kids can spend the rest of their day learning through play!

I have loved Sonlight curriculum. It can be pricey, but one core can be used for multiple grades, so you can use it for both kids. It has a lot of reading using 'living books'. Instead of dry history school texts kids read a lot of historical fiction. They use this approach for subjects like science, too. It is a Charlotte Mason ish approach that encourages love of learning. We used teaching textbooks for math. The program teaches them the lesson and the practice problems have explanations for each problem if needed. I have a 17 year old that just graduated and a soon to be 14 year old. We've used multiple curriculum over the years but Sonlight has been my favorite.

I homeschooled our 4 kids and we started with Abeka as well but soon found the amount of busy work was just to much. After that we mixed and matched. We did unit studies a lot.. with those you can teach both your kids at the same time and then add math and English grade appropriate for them.

My youngest son went to public school about 2or3 years in maybe 4th - 6th the rest was.private school using abeka got his GED when he would've been in 10th. The professor that pretested him was surprised at things he knew when they were just sitting and talking. Even today he reads stuff that enlarges his knowledge and vocabulary.
