Thanks for the video! Hinge cut aspen pockets is already off my checklist. Next I'm going to prune back some dogwoods and willows for bedding pockets and to keep and plant the cuttings.
Hi Drew! Make sure you completely cut those aspen so you can take advantage of those shoots that explode out of the root system 😊

Love the content as always. Planning my bedding areas out for my rectangular 40 in mid Michigan. Do you have any content on hardwood swamps? Areas of this property are under knee deep water from snow melt to mid fall. Having a hard time planning. Big bucks and deer on our cams in the mid/late summer. Only rut route runners during hunting season.

That's great Mark! Remember that snowshoe hares love that Jack pine...lower limbs that is. Cover and food. Bucks also love to rub them and scrape under them...they make good vertical mock scrapes branches 😊

I’m in NC where we have a lot of loblolly pine. If you had full control of a property would you get rid of the pines if growing deer was the goal?
Yes, for sure in all areas except for Gunter access and blowing your scent into while on a deer stand.
I have a large stand of mature aspen I'd like to cut for regenerative growth. I was just looking at it yesterday afternoon.
Make sure to cut in total pockets. Doesn't mean you have to cut the entire stand down, but make sure that what you do cut is a complete pocket and gets full sun exposure
Looking to get out next week and start looking for sheds down here in SWVA!

In a northern/big timber setting would adding Northwoods Whitetails forb and forage to FSI pockets be recommended to make them look like the area you’re standing or just let it come back as hardwood regen?
Another great video. Always enjoy your work. I just harvested 15 acres of very mature aspen and now looking forward to the regrowth. Thinking of cleaning up the logging roads to gain more edge rather than just let it all get thick. North - south openings may let more sun in to encourage shrubs and forbs. Any thoughts on that?

Hi JD! Both are excellent to hinge...hickory more for cover (deer don't like the browse too much) and basswood for cover and browse

Plus, I have tons of saplings and the trees get caught up before hitting the ground.
Hi Roger, maple can be great...oak as well!
You have to pick trees you know will fell correctly and then create holes to drop other trees into safely. Often you need to plan several cuts out before cutting the first tree.
The property I hunt is a very narrow 10 acres. 280ft x 1600ft. The property is mostly buck thorn and box elder with a few grassy areas the deer use to bed. Can i use hinge cuts on the box elders to attract/pull the deer away from my access path, while also blocking their view of my access? Is there a certain orientation to my path the tree should lay down to help my situation?
The property is surrounded by residential and agricultural fields, so getting in and out is tricky.
Hey great video as always just curious on soft maple is it better to hindge cut or take them down like the aspen
I like to let the size and circumstance dictate. 6-7" and under they are great for hunting...one of the best! However if they are all that size...a combo of complete and hinge cuts is more appropriate. Larger than that, I cut the big ones down first to clear canopy and then hinge if needed for additional side cover...but not too much cover that deer can't travel thru it.

In my 30 years of deer hunting, I'm sorry I've never seen or observed deer eating boxelder. I have boxelder on my property, deer don't touch it. I hate boxelder bugs. I rather plant better browse.
Great winter browse around here...and very good side cover too. Red maple is better...aspen shoots are better...but pretty equal to cherry and oak. Definitely better than beech, hickory and ash. Buck bedding magnet if managed for side cover
I have never seen a box elder not browsed on the stump sprouts/regen or branch tips, no matter the state or region.
Boxelder is candy here in southwest Wisconsin
@@ArrowandString I have tons of it in my area, but the deer hit the quaking aspen as preferred browse. I'd rather get rid of the boxelder and let the aspen thrive in the newly opened sunlight.
I just planted a ton of Hybrid Willows. It's thick and browsy and with enough of them, I'd don't have to cut them. The deer chew them straight to the ground and they'll keep coming back. Very interesting tree.
