I miss the old ground, it had a special atmosphere, I used to get goosebumps walking along Fullwel Ave and turning down the side of the Redby onto Leeds Rd and the back of the Fullwel End was just there, towering over the houses. So many brilliant memories of the place
My heart still aches when i see old footage of Roker Park because the memories are so vivid, i can still hear the fans singing in my head as i made my way to the fullwell end and my heart pounding and the hairs on the back of my neck standing on end. I want to go back to the 70s and 80s, i don't like modern footy as much. R.I.P, ROKER PARK.
Had many great memories there and I still think that the 1973 5th round replay v Man City was the best game I’ve ever seen. I was vocally against its demolition and protested as such but I’ve got say now that Bob was right. Like all of us do eventually, the old place was creaking. When you see the once magnificent Roker end stripped down to less than half its size, it’s time to move on. The SoL has had great nights too, with hopefully many more to come!
Went their in the 80s as an away fan maybe in some parallel universe grounds like roker park, highbury, upton park, the baseball ground and main road still exist
@@safcvlogger2235 Its a tin wrap around mate like all the others. I much refered the traditional British ground such as Villa Park, Ibrox, Craven Cottage etc but its were we are now marra, lets hope for a better season. Haway the Lads.
In the 1960s, my Grandparents used to own the grocers at 36 Roker Baths Road, on the corner just opposite the ground. It subsequently became the Sunderland AFC Supporters Association shop (see 0:25 to 0:32). It's now a hairdressers...sigh. I still have a photo of the old shop though (and a pic of me outside the ground in 1961).
I have got exactly ZERO interest in football, BUT it saddens me to see this.. When i was about 8 in 1970 i used to live in Glen Thorpe Avenue about 150 yards from the ground. They used to play matches in the evenings sometimes, on a Wednesday perhaps?? I can still remember seeing all the floodlights on and the tremendous roar when sunderland scored a goal.. You know what though.. Even though the streets around where i lived would be packed with parked cars and there would obviously be very many people about that had gone to see the football, i NEVER EVER, NOT ONCE, saw or heard any trouble whatsoever... Miss Sunderland....

Roker Park was def one of grounds I wish I had visited (Pompey fan). Classic big old stadium with so much history.

My childhood in the fullwell end..gone but never forgotten.
Should never knock these stadiums down.
to right
Lump in the throat. Still vividly remember dragging myself out of the Fulwell, the very last night. Like it was yesterday.
It's horrible when this happens, effectively they are flattening history and people's memories of these places to build lifeless souless new stadiums
