Tha Japanese were in the forefront of naval aviation as a weapon system so the lack of air cover available during the defense of the Philippines and the resultant destruction of the surface forces should have been expected

Fuchida no. 6

Fuchida's writing were judged as fiction by knowledgeable Japanese historians. They were written to make a better ending to their real performance. I think Kurita's sinking in the heavy cruiser Atago gave him a weakened resolve to stand up to Taffy escort carriers and their tiny screening ships. And the American planes had only anti-personnell bombs meant to hit Japanese defenders ashore on Leyte Island.
