  • The second part of my trip was more about traveling locally and going to the LA Auto Show than traveling long distances; however, Los Angeles is a big place, so I wanted to demonstrate how I navigate around town without access to charging at my motel.
    These are the chargers featured during this leg of the trip:
    Electrify America, Camarillo Outlets: www.plugshare.com/location/19...
    EVgo, The Oaks: www.plugshare.com/location/45659
    PowerUp Pasadena, Marengo Charging Plaza: www.plugshare.com/location/38377

    Great coverage of EVents Eric, thanks!
    BTW, got the new battery in my 2017 and couldn't be more pleased.
    I think they may have prioritized me because there was a pretty big delta between my low cell and highest ( 60mV and sometimes more ).
    I'm now seeing 230 miles on the top line of the GOM whereas it was about 190 before.

    20 Tritium chargers in 1 spot - that’s impressive! And worthy of the Eric site score test, although accessibility might take a hit. Enjoying your trip. Happy Holidays everyone!

      Thanks! I think I did a formal site review for this a year or so ago. Yes, it did get dinged for access. It's also on the top floor of a pay to use parking garage, which counts against it.

    Pretty disappointing that GM couldn't even have an Ultium display considering they claim to be going all in on electric. They don't want the general public to know their brand should be considered?

    • @newscoulomb3705
      @newscoulomb3705  2 роки тому

      Yes, but they were opening Factory Zero at the same time. I think they do want the general public to know, but I think they know that the LA Auto Show coverage isn't going to be friendly to them at this point, regardless.

      @@firstbigbarney Chevrolet won't have an EV to sell for several months, but they have a number coming up. Depending on how long it takes to complete the recall, we could see the Bolt EV/EUV delayed until Spring 2022. They wouldn't want to spoil the Silverado E ahead of CES, and based on the teasers about an Equinox EV, that won't be available until late 2023. Still, they could have displayed something. Even if it was just a basic Ultium display and explanation.

    Another great video. I heard about GM not having anything. Just Chevy and it was all gas powered cars. It seems like somebody at GM didn't get the message that the LA Auto show this year was going to be mostly electric vehicles. The Hummer EV is out they could have had one of those sitting there at least.
    You mentioned charging while doing other activities, and compared it to waiting in line at a gas station? I've heard this mentioned multiple times. Is it a California issue? Because I've never waited in line at a gas station in my life. Except when I was a truck driver. And it's a lot different situation with semis. You're putting in 300 gallons, you have to walk in and pay. Oftentimes the truck drivers checking the tire pressures cleaning the windshields topping off the fluids at the same time that they're doing that stuff. But I've never pulled into a regular car gas station and seen a line?
    Looking forward to the future videos.

    • @newscoulomb3705
      @newscoulomb3705  2 роки тому

      I don't know if it's just a California thing, but we definitely have lines at gas stations. Costco is probably the biggest offender, where it's common for people to wait 15 to 20 minutes in line just to access a pump. The longest my 500-mile trip up I-5 has taken in any vehicle was in my Subaru WRX on Thanksgiving week. Between traffic only moving at 25 miles on the freeway for several hundred miles and a 45 minute wait in line at the gas station, the 500-mile trip took over 14 hours to complete.

    At 25:09 really bad UX design on those Veefil by Tritium chargers. Having green for a stop button and blue for the start - that is very counter intuitive. You even instinctively reached for the green button, as I'm sure many people have before you and continue to.

    I just moved to Ventura county from texas (drove the whole way in my bolt) and was shocked to find it much harder to own an electric car in California than in texas due to the complete clogging of level 2 charging by volts and hybrids. I think it’s about time they ban hybrids from public chargers as I cannot fathom any reason for them to clog up a spot for multiple hours for 20 miles of electric range. Not only that, but hybrid users will sometimes just use charger spots for the parking and not even plug in. There is an abundance of EVs at this point that I think we should ban hybrids from public chargers as they make stress the already stretched infrastructure even further. Has this been brought up in the local EV advocacy group and what do you think of this issue?

    • @Termnath
      @Termnath 2 роки тому

      ( i live in an apartment complex with no outlets available hence my dependence on public infrastructure.I also find any level 3 chargers except electrify America to be inadequate and often occupied as there are simply not enough for the amount of EVs in Cali, glad to see electrify America expanding soon in the Ventura county area)

    • @newscoulomb3705
      @newscoulomb3705  2 роки тому

      I suggest you attend some of the EV Advocacy meetings in Ventura County. Ventura County has seen a huge surge in infrastructure build out, and areas that were lacking in coverage have really improved.
      As you noted, the L2 can be dominated by plug-in hybrids. I personally don't mind that as long as they move after they're finished charging. Ultimately, when they are running on battery, they are EVs too.

    • @Termnath
      @Termnath 2 роки тому

      @@newscoulomb3705 I will certainly look into it, thank you! I know you are a previous volt owner and have sympathies for it, I personally think it was a fantastic car for it’s time. I never had an issue with volts and hybrids in Texas as there were probably more fully electric cars there than plug in hybrids, I’m just a bit shell shocked by the difference here where the mall and downtown garage spots are taken up all day by the same volts over and over. I think peak charging hours (maybe 6 pm - 12 am) reserved for fully electric cars could help make sure hybrids don’t ice out spots all day and keep the chargers open for cars that could best utilize them during busy hours when there are plenty of EVs to keep them full. When there’s plenty of chargers open, I don’t mind the hybrids. I just think EVs should take priority and we are or soon will reach the point where there are enough EVs to justify limiting or banning hybrids from certain level 2 chargers. Thanks again !

    When I watch your videos, and you say, Hey google, my Google speaker in my workout room responds, LOL. In one of your videos you said that it would be nice if GM puts the new batteries in the 2020s and beyond and give them better charging speeds with better range. I think that would be fair since the 2017-2019s are getting better range, that the 2020s and beyond should get a better range too. That would be great in a different world. However I think that GM is going electric because they have to, not because they want to. Customers wanted to keep the EV1 cars and GM would not let them. Now the customer demand can not be ignored and the government is also pushing for EVs.

      GM is only going to restore original functionality. Even if they wanted to update newer Bolt EV/EUVs, they couldn't retrofit Ultium. My suggestion is that they offer an Ultium upgrade option, but that would take a redesign.

    Well I’m off now to look at Kona’s . Was told the battery replacements are gonna be mostly for owners already a newer vehicles that they’re trying to sell but they said 17 maybe 18’s that are sitting on a lot that’s gonna be a long time that’s what I was told so it looks like the first of the year I’m gonna start looking for a COROS which was my second choice your problems they weren’t sold in many states so I can’t find them and where I live so he’s I’d have to travel to buy one that’s crazy

    Any advice on HVAC use? I've read some Bolters setting 60/Lo and using fan speed instead of the Auto setting. Seems Auto can use heat and AC at the same time.

    • @newscoulomb3705
      @newscoulomb3705  2 роки тому

      I believe it runs AC when the defogger is working, but that's the only time. The HVAC system does seem to warm/cool better when you set to HI/LO and select the fans rather than Auto. It also seems to be a bit more efficient to set a temperature and use the fans rather than leaving it on Auto.
