I'll tell you what happened to the ALIEN from 1979. Ripley blew it out the GODDAMN airlock.
Yes you think, yet it returns to haunt us again in 4 sequels! 🤣
😂
That's different ones
The ORIGINAL is long gone, there's just 500 million eg in that ship
Didn't it also get burned in the engines?
Was the airlock cursed by God?
The notion of seeing the "Big Chap" on-screen once again in Alien Romulus is absolutely nuts!
Best Sci-Fi franchise ever...
After 45 years drifting in space, it hit xenopause and said, " fuck this I'll be in Sigourney Weaver's basement if anyone needs me"
This was my first R-rated movie. I was 13 at the time. This movie had the best trailer of all time. It gave almost nothing away. All we got was that glowing egg, bizarro shriek, about 20 seconds of lightning fast flashes and a fade to the tag line. We had no idea what to expect and when that thing popped out of Kane’s chest, we crapped our drawers! Genius! I never had an experience like this again.
I had the good fortune of seeing Alien on the big screen in 1979. Seeing the trailer for The Empire Strikes Back playing before the film was an unexpected surprise!
I remember when this came out , it was when we had a movie explosion of GREAT pictures. It was a HUGE movie and talked about by everyone. Good times and for me I think it was the last best decade of great pictures… I am so glad you are making these video, keep them coming.
"In space no one can hear you scream," best tag line ever! The story, sets, design, lighting, cinematography and cast made this one of the best movies of it's time. And it stands up just as well today.
One of those movies that changed science fiction movies forever.
Especially the scene when they climb up and see the space cowboy for the first time.
Yea that movie will scare the hell outa you....
ALIEN and even the sequels remain timeless! I don't care what people say about Alien3 or Resurrection but they are still classic Alien movies and part of the franchise as opposed to the trash Prometheus and Covenant was....😒
@@xenomorphlover Absolutely agree, I watched the last two just hoping there would be something about them that I would love, just like the originals but sadly no.
My aunt and uncle dragged me to the drive-in in '79 to see "Alien" when I was 8. I don't remember many details of the film from that night....other than that I was absolutely TERRIFIED when it was all over. Now that I am just a couple years older, and can discern between movie and reality *chuckles* I LOVE this film. Thank you for this video, Dan. Great job!
Irwin Allen must have been jealous, such a low budget but wow! Lol. I Remember seeing the premiere, and when the egg opened and the Alien flew to his face, a girl on the other side of the theater stood and screamed at the top of her lungs. The audience laughed. When I got home telling the story to my family, my sister put her hands over her face. It was her.what an awesome movie.
Thanks Dan.
He's in his 50s now. Wondering where all the time went, noticing aches and pains, taking longer to stand, going "oooofff" whenever he sits down and telling all the younger aliens "I used to come here when it was all just planets"
🤣🤣😂
The eye sockets considerably reduce the horror aspect as it just looks too 'human'
..Im glad they filmed Alien with these hidden - it made it much scarier!
Thank you, Don! Ionce met Veronica Cartwright and told her that "Alien" was terrifying.
That's awesome :-) her sister was Penny on Lost in Space :-)
I saw one of the original used costumes and heads in the HR Giger Museum in Switzerland last year. Absolutely stunning!!!
I actually threw my hands up in front of me and screamed like a little girl when the Xenomorph got Captain Dallas. Yeah, everyone in the theater laughed at me. In 1979, my 16-year-old ego took a while to recover from that one. lol
The big chap was the best version of the Alien . Subsequent iterations got less biomechnoid and more dinosaur like .
Fantastic storytelling Dan! Between Aliens, and Monty Python we who grew up during that time are a strange lot.
Hey, I resemble that comment! 😅
wouldn't trade it for the world! :)
Both man who portrayed the Alien have since passed away, Bolaji Badejo (1953-1992) and Eddie Powell (1927 - 2000) RIP both of you gentlemen. (note: Bolaji was offered the role of one of the aliens in ALIENA in 1986, but he turned it down and he already had moved to Nigeria in 1980, that was his only screen role).
Eddie Powell was Christopher Lee’s stunt double in a few Dracula movies !!
Went to go see "Aliens" in the theater opening night and there was a full scale model of the xenomorph in the lobby that was roped off. Totally cool! I always wondered where it wound up.
There was a full size model of a predator in a London book shop on the kings road. That was epic, loved seeing it
Dude, are you kidding?!? THE preeminent horror movie of all time! Back in '79, most theaters had just one screen, and they were HUGE - 70mm, SurroundSound, bass throws, etc. ALIEN was at a particular theater like that for 8 months! Every showing had at least one Denver Paramedic van waiting outside for those who fainted at Kane's chest-bursting scene. I saw this icon 23 times (at $2.50 a pop), with sisters, brothers, friends, my now-wife (who asked me if we could leave after the egg opened to attack Kane.) My only gripe with "Aliens" was that the xenomorphs were being killed off like flies - this after Ash, in the original, told Ripley that they couldn't be killed - PHOOEY, I say! I do have the original toy still, with it's "squeeze head/ jaw eject" mechanism. There will NEVER be another like it, although "Prometheus" is close. Thanks for the close look, buddy - fantastic!! -- Steve
Well worth the wait! Excellent video!
Man...I don't remember the alien having such a prominent human skull...it's even creepier
I never considered that until this video to be honest. Maybe it has something to do with how the organism adapts to it's new host inside, and 'forms' around it's host's DNA as well as it's own. This is kind of hinted at in the dog in Alien 3
That alien toy, I played with it in Sears, the poor barbies didn't stand a chance. And I was 26 at the time..lmao.
Ebert was usually pretty good for reviews, but Alien is so much more than a haunted house in space. It was beautiful, wonderful, horrible, and oh, so inspiring.
And a Freudian psycho-sexual nightmare!
I “had” a 18 inch tall alien toy in the 80s. Super collectible…😢 kids can be really stupid with her toys is the lesson of the story.
I agree. The first Alien movie is my favourite because it is so psychologically scary, and not so blow 'em up gore fest as the later ones. Also, Sigourney Weaver is just so flipping good in that movie
Sigourney was not accompanied by soldiers. She was accompanied by Colonial Marines.
Another amazing entry. Thanks, Dan!
Even the trailer is a classic.
It's one of the best trailers out there
@@MoviesMusicMonsters … Absolutely
My favourite movie in the franchise. It messes with your head and still gives me the creeps, but on the plus side, made me a lifelong fan of Sigourney Weaver.
I've always thought the tail of "Big Chap" reminded me of a fossilized tail of a T-Rex. H.R. Giger is my favorite "mad scientist." I loved the cast - great characters who I felt terribly when they were killed one-by-one. Thanks, Dan Monroe.
Awesome. When I was working in Hollywood, my boss's brother was the executive producer and co-writer of this film so I'm very close to it. And coincidentally, a close friend, make-up artist Rodd Matsui, was one of the people that restored one of the original suits. It was impressive being in its presence.
Whenever I used to watch Siskel and Ebert rate movies, If they gave it thumbs down then I knew I had to watch it if they gave it a thumbs up I knew it was going to be an artsy fartsy film that would bore the shit out of me lol
Siskel and Ebert actually liked Alien and thought it was scary. Their tastes did extend beyond art house type films though they would get annoyed at endless sequels.
@@folgore1 the fat guy liked it, but a month later panned it, no doubt like most critics they were victims to peer pressure, these two bloated gas bags were shit stains on the industry.
As always great job Dan!
Kane's son, the original xenomorph, got sucked out in space when Ripley opened the hatch, BUT it was still tethered to the hook gun, which was stuck to the hatch as it closed. The alien was never really blown away. The alien has been traveling with Ripley all along. It cocooned itself and survived space. It made it to Romulus. You can see its cocoon being pulled in a spaceship. And you can even see Ripley's lifeboat drifting away as the space station collides with the planet's rings. Look down and right in the frame.
Is this true? Unbelievable
@@mindrover777 Two weeks to go!!!
The tag line "In Space, no one Can Hear you Scream," that kept me from watching this film!!!! Awesome scary, along with "When Hell Is Full, the Dead will Walk the Earth."
Keep up the fun and entertaing work, Mr. Monroe!
The skull isn't visible in the film, or in any others in the series, but it's visible on the action figure. I always noticed that and always wondered why.
Oh, I thought he meant what happened to the ALIEN from 1979?...
Sat here thinking to myself. (Well.. Ripley blow it out the goddamn air-lock!). Is it still alive deep in space somewhere?...
5mins into the video and I realize he means the actual godamn suit! Hahahaha!!! 🤦♂😆
I'm 57 years old and this movie still gives me nightmares. Such a classic. I got my "How cool is that" tshirt today, Dan. Gonna wear it at my gig next weekend.
That Film is a Masterpiece and a Fine Work of Art
I was 23 when Alien came out, I was on the edge of my seat to say the least. No one had ever seen sci-fi horror like this before, a true classic.
I recently found your channel and I am enjoying the content, Great stuff.
Hands down Alien & Aliens is the best in the franchise
Another great video. I saw the title and thought, “How cool is that?!”. That and “Movies, Music and Monsters” are great taglines.
Hey there buddy, thank you so much :-) I really appreciate it. Adorable cat on your avatar by the way :-)
My mom loves sci fi and took me to see Alien when it came out in '79. I got a cool mom!
NECA toys redid the 12 inch Kenner Alien right down to the same packaging a few years back. Bought one for 100 bucks.
Finally, a happy ending!! Iconic props NOT ending up in the trash bin or in some guy's basement!!
Great to see the sponsors recognizing your work. Well deserved!
Apparently, WY recovers the Big Chap to set the stage for Romulus. Can't wait to see it!
Still the best alien movie to date. The score alone is nothing short of perfection
As an 8 year old kid, even the commercials scared the crap out of me!
The nightmares i had, where i thought an alien was living in the attic….
lol when you talked about ‘protection’, I thought you’d been sponsored by Trojans. 😂 5:30
I was waiting for the Trojan segue, too... LOL....

There is a collectables shop in Melbourne Australia called Lobo Collectables. They have ( or may not now have ) a full size Alien costume. Fourteen years ago I was in this shop and down the back stood a huge Alien. Someone had seriously ruined it by foam filling the thing causing it to rip and tear. The guy who has the shop also has one of the original screen used Darth Vader helmets.
Sharper Image sold a 6’ ft plus statue of the Alien in the late 90’s for $3500 +.
And you passed it up? I wonder what they are worth now?
Just watched the Alien 45th anniversary showing at my fav theater a few weeks ago and now, here you are talking about it! How Cool Is That?
Yep, I was 20 in ‘79. This movie scared me so bad, I felt physically ill from the tension and wanted to leave in the middle of the movie. Glad I stuck it out!
I saw Alien in the theater when it first came out and to this day is the only movie that ever gave me actual nightmares!! I watched it again a few years ago and it is still one of the scariest movies I’ve ever seen!!
Before the movie was released I found a comic in drugstore that depicted the major scenes in the movie. I later saw the movie with my wife. Before the John Hurt ‘chest’ scene, I turned and carefully took the popcorn container from her so it wouldn’t go flying. I think that freaked her out more than the scene.😂
oh it freakd out the cast too! Veronica Cratwright and Yaphette Koto had ZERO idea what was going to happen until they shot that scene- Veronica Cartwright's reaction is 1000% genuine!
@@eclipsehorse8693 I heard that! 😂 Ridley Scott got his reaction shot. 😏
@@TripleBerg "shhh don;t tell them what's going to happen! watch, this will be fun!!"
@@eclipsehorse8693 😂😂
When you put together stuff for a best of reel make sure this one gets on it Dan. Good research and presentation on this episode.
Ripley blew it out the God damn airlock!
Yup, and she nuked all the rest from orbit ...only way to be sure.
The look of the film was absolutely unique for that time. Just really cool. Ahead of its time.
It's first horror I saw because it's an unknown enemy my Mum suggested it and I loved it watched Aliens next day lol
The feeling of dread in this movie was out of this world.
To this day, the Xenomorph scares the hell out of me....being exposed to this creature as a child it sort of scarred me but in a fun way. I always enjoyed the lore and the universe of the franchise, it's right up there next to the Terminator and Star Wars. I lived in Portland Oregon most of my life, and Dark Horse Comics has a headquarters in McLoughlin area where they also own a chain of stores called Things from Another World, think you'd dig it Dan. Anyways, their HQ building has a window display and there for a number of decades were life size Xenomorphs, a Predator and a couple of Xeno eggs. During the holidays they all even get lil santa hats, pretty funny.
Anyways, about a decade ago a girl I was dating told me she liked Scifi, but she hated space movies, like anything with space venturing which was odd....why like scifi then? I asked if she had ever seen ALIEN which she said, no, that's stupid it's not even scary looking. Well I took her as a surprise to the DH building, turned her around to face a Xenomorph and she fell on her butt screaming. Yeah, not stupid looking right :P
We watched the first two films after that, she loved them. Infact, whenever there was a special screening of the original film she would ask if we could go....so for a couple of years every halloween we'd go see ALIEN.
Over the last 8 years I've been a prop replica maker, mostly into 3D printing and pour alot of time and effort into it. Recently I came across some ALIEN related stuff and gave it a go. Very hard to replicate Winston's team of monster making but I've done a Xenomorph egg and a chest burster......funny enough these are out in my yard as decoration. One day, I'll finally have the nerve to do a life size just so I can scare the hell out of kids on halloween.
Every Christmas shopping season, Johnny Carson examined that year's popular and noteworthy toys. I remember well his revulsion at the Kenner Alien in 1979! He was absolutely horrified that such a vile thing was to be found in toy stores!
It was in Heavy Metal Magazine...😊
“At the hotel in Paris where they first met for the Dune film project, Giger came up to Dan (O’Bannon) holding some tin foil and said to him, ‘would you like some opium?’ Dan asked, ‘Why do you take that?’ Giger replied ‘I am afraid of my visions.’ Dan replied, ‘It's only your mind.’ Giger then said, ‘That is what I am afraid of.’”
1979 was a bumper year for great science fiction movies: Alien, Star Trek-TMP, and The Black Hole.
Perfect fusion of horror and Sci Fi. Just seen it in theater for it's anniversary. There was no creature like it before and the effects still hold up
Kind of weird to see that it has a human skull inside the top of the head.
I don't think we ever saw that in the movie.
To me the forehead just looked glossy black.
My friend David Lady has at least 1 full size alien in his house in Chatfield, Ohio. He & his wife Laura used to open their house during Halloween & the Horror Hotel was the #1 Halloween attraction
in the USA for many years. David used to work in the movies but had to retire due to health issues. David & Laura are both TOP SHELF people.
If you don't know David, Dan, you should look up his channel Mask Wizard. I believe you 2 would be friends. TYVM for another great video !!!
I’ve seen the one at the museum it pop culture. I took a picture with it and told children it’s my pet.
It was actually just a beachball with spots spraypainted on. no wait that was the first version " Dark Star".
Whatever happened to that beachball.
I was hooked on this classic the moment I saw it. Consider that the materials used were not designed to last. The fact that the heads survive all this time is a miracle.
Roger Ebert: Proof that a kind, smart guy with an encyclopedic knowledge of film can sometimes get things completely, astoundingly wrong.
Sometimes. Most of the time he got it right though.
I got the toy for my birthday when I was 12 also saw the film at the AVCO theater In West Los Angeles close to the UCLA campus my favorite film of all time.
Saw one of the full size alien costumes around 84 or 85 at a store in Manhattan called Forbidden Planet on Broadway in the village it was around 7ft tall simply incredible
How cool is that?! Thanks so much for sharing!
Dan, thank you for putting all these up for us. Alien and Aliens were and still are the crown jewels of sci-fi/horror. Looking forward to ALIENS!!!!
I had the alien action figure back in '79 when it was released and got it for Christmas that year. And I have a funny story concerning it. In '79 I was eight years old going on 9 that November. My late older brother who of course as older brothers do, enjoyed playing pranks on me Whenever the chance arose. So, in this particular story what he did was took my alien action figure and set it up on a windowsill and covered it with the curtains. Then, told me that he saw something outside of the house and encouraged me to take a look out the window. Well, when I pulled the curtain back there was the alien doll with his arms stretched out Staring straight at me... Over the years, my brother laughed hysterically in remembrance of my reaction when I pulled the curtain back, I started shaking all over and backed away from it letting out a yell rather than a scream that literally was Just: "EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!" LMAO I still laugh myself to this day when I think about it.
Great video Dan! You and I are the same age and, I too, was completely mortified by the ALIEN and had nightmares for years! However, I fell in love with the first two films after seeing ALIENS in THX in 1986. It still gave me nightmares into my 20's! At 6'9" and with similar features and voice, I have to ask if you're related to Penn Jillette. Again, great video and thank you for focusing on one of the best sci-fi horror films ever made. I am crossing my fingers that Alien Romulus will be a film that finally does the first two films justice. I personally have not liked any ALIEN film after ALIENS, although some of them have been somewhat entertaining. Ridley's prequels were meh. Alien Resurrection was so bad that it made me appreciate ALIEN 3 which I didn't care for either. It's all subjective, though. It doesn't matter what film(s) you like or don't like in the franchise, we all have the commonality of loving the ALIEN itself. Giger was a genius and a madman in his own right. Looking forward to more of your video's!
Hey there Jason :-) thanks for writing and supporting the channel. Yeah the wonderful and horrific alien memories of her childhood are something we should never forget :-)
I've loved _Alien_ since it first came out, but even at that first screening there were two things about the alien I didn't like: the way the chest burster ran across the table (it just looked a bit muppet-ish) and the scenes at the end when you saw the full alien and it was obvious it was just a guy in a suit. I wish they could have kept the final form as non-human as the earlier forms.
The 1979 adult Alien creature design is still the best. NONE of the other films have surpassed it.
Would LOVE to see a supercut of the film - with EVERYTHING thrown in - released one day (50th anniversary?).
I didn't like the changes made the Alien in the Aliens sequel. They were small and not nearly as ferocious as the 1979 Alien movie.
Gunna have to watch Alien again for the zillionth time, I don't ever recall seeing a skull in the head, or anything in the head at all. I thought the skull cap was black and not in any way transparent....
It’s there, just the way Giger came up with it, and the original Kenner toy from ‘79 also had it the clear part of the toy skull would come off and usually get lost.
@@rodneywhitfield5754 Im sure 'Toy Paloi' will have a restoration video coming up before long :)
A friend of mine took me to super-fan/collector Bob Burns house in the mid-90s where he had a bunch of ALIEN stuff, apparently given to him by 20th Century Fox.
He not only had multiple heads, but props like the side arm and tracker and Ripley's white spacesuit helmet.
He also had a Nostromo miniature and the Alien ship!
No idea if he still has them today.
Great review Dan, Hello from Australia
Greetings Australia :-) hello from New York :-) I definitely want to get out to visit your beautiful country one of these days :-) thanks for the support.
@@MoviesMusicMonsters Thanks for your reply, Colin is my name, looking forward to your next show :)
Mister, You have an outstanding voice for what you’re doing! So glad you’re not using AI narration!
Alien and The Thing with Kurt Russell the two most horrific movies of all time hands down. For a 10 year old kid with that cracked green screeching egg trailer Ill never get over that
The world building in Alien was the best, good to see some of it is still out there.
Fun Fact: there is a little known cut that features an alternative sequence of Lamberts death. Veronica Cartwright has even gone on record & stated they filmed much more & she was in fact suspended in a harness & virtually naked (further alluding to what the alien may have done to her). She also said if you watch where the tail goes between her legs, it’s actually Brett’s feet, not hers (she wore cowboy boots as part of her costume).
Another great review. Love the new site.
H R Gieger's vision was amazing
My favourite movie of all time. First saw it in the very early eighties on Betamax, and since seen it over a hundred times. ❤❤

When I was a kid in 70's we had a Saturday morning horror matinee at the local theater so I had my share of gore and soda for under five bucks but the first movie I saw that scared me was phantasm also made in 79, Alien's is still one of my favorite movies. Thanks Dan.
I saw this film on the big screen in 1979 in Muncie Indiana with my high school boyfriend. It was amazing. A few weeks ago I saw it again on the big screen with my husband. It was amazing. Counting all the times I've seen Alien on the small screen I have probably seen this film fifty times at least. It holds up very well and hopefully will continue to scare people for the next fifty years! Fun fact, nothing this creature does is outside of the realm of nature. There are bugs that burrow their eggs in other animals to come bursting out later. There are beetles that loosen their leg joints to spew acid blood when disturbed. Etc, etc. The writers cleverly took their inspiration from the natural world, thus making the story especially unnerving!
Awesome job as always on this episode! Alien was the first 'R' rated movie I got to go to, with my older brother!
