In this video, Jesse Engelbrecht explains how to return a high lob serve after it has hit the sidewall.
It's widely regarded as one of the more difficult shots in squash, particularly for players who are new to the game. If you can get it right, you'll give yourself the best chance of getting in to the rally on a positive footing.

Video time bar looks like the red line of the squash court.
I’ve been trying to improve my back hand return of serve for a long time now with little success. Today I tried out your tips and it felt really good! I think my problem was the lack of movement. It really made a big difference to follow your steps, definitely gonna stick with this!
Nice video, this is probably my weakest shot which is a problem because it puts me at a disadvantage from the start of the point!
Really helpful video! This has improved my game immeasurably
Very helpful video!
Great video. Well executed.
Great video! Love the ball machine
great informative video!
Thank you so much! 👍
cool, thanks for the tutorial
Great video. How about one for the forehand side? I struggle to return serve straight on the forehand side.
Nice video
This is my favourite guy on squash skills
Second that.. by far the most concise and clear explanation
Hi Jesse, great Video :) ever considered a video about proper grip tips ?
fire 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
mega cooles video
Great video Jesse as usual. Thank you.
Also, thank you for this here 1:32
This has to be one of my biggest failings, I've legit lost a good 10 games because I lost a load of points to missing these shots. I resorted to volleying it into the other corner.
I have finally been able to work out a method for myself. The few things I do(same as I had several points before my gold swing- I have 11 points Tiger Woods I believe has 100+ check points before swinging)
1) I realised I was too close to the wall. Now I am at a distance where as I swing I barely touch the wall
2) I rotate myself backward to get the power…but here is the trick that I developed for myself.. I have timed my backward movement to be triggered by the sound of the ball hitting the wall.
Just use that sound to synchronise your backward winding of the torso.
Add these two to the other aspects of the swing and see if you can workout a method that works for you.
I have been able to return the serves to land on either back corners with this…my overall return of serve has improved significantly.
Any news on the Stingray Ball Machine 4:10? Looks like it never progressed past the prototype stage.
What kind of ball machine are you using? Great video
Stingray ball machine, you can check it out here: stingraysquash.com
What Squash machine are your using?
Hi Steven, Jesse is using the new Stingray machine, you can find out more about it here: stingraysquash.com
What ball machine is that
Stingray works well with blue balls
Great video 👍
Any idea why the stringray uses blue balls rather than the usual black ones?
@@ES-zj2tq I'd say the only reason is because black balls will be cold, therefore impractical to use due to the lack of bounce. The blue balls bounce much more readily when cold, so it's a better simulation of a black ball in a match.
Some of those returns are very hard for the server to then get to - certainly at our club level.
Nah they're fine, you just bash into the other guy with your shoulder and claim a stroke! :)
i dont know why some put dislike to this video already, its really useful
It's people who do lob serves and don't want intel on how to return it made public
B
I'm losing so many games just because can't return a serve... forehand and backhand
