All cabinet makers are carpenters, but not all carpenters are cabinet makers. At 80 years young I’m a lousy carpenter ( too slow snd picky) but being a cabinet maker for many years, I note a different appreciation of my work than when I was “carpentering”

Thank you. Thank you. To hear your "mum" say exactly the same words this "mum" has been saying for 50 years. In that time I was a kitchen designer, architect and builder. It was like pulling teeth convincing clients that wider drawers were more useful than all those gadgets they were showing me on UA-cam. When designing a house I tried to work in a walk in pantry or pantry "closet" to make up for that "lost space"

Hi Funny Carpenter! I want to thank you so much for making these videos. I just moved to a new house and I’m having problems with my dog’s nails lightly scratching the floor, I have a weird corner cabinet and there are some damages on the baseboards I want to fix. I never knew what to search for online to fix these problems. Just by scrolling through your videos I have been able to fix all of these everyday problems. You are honestly the BEST!!

It was a little flimsier than I expected. I had to add a 2x2 piece of wood to the bottom on the rear side in order to stabilize it better ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxXTh-lz-8W6GcB219vTLp27-MxbZYObBX . It is also starting to bow a little at the outer wall ( I've had it up for about 6 months), I've already had a shelf tumble down because of the bow and the fact that the little shelf brackets are quite short. I went out to home depot and got some longer ones so that the shelves don't tumble down again. Overall, it looks very nice for the price and it holds a lot ( I use it as a pantry). I am very satisfied with my purchase. I just strongly suggest reinforcing it before putting it up.

Thank you for the humorous and very useful video about corner cabinets! I didn't realize what a super Susan was until now, and thought that all lazy Susans had that annoying pole in the middle.
With your inspiration, I was able to convert our existing 24" lazy Susan to a brand new pair of 32" super Susans, complete with a new shelf in the middle. The 24" Susan was pretty horrible, with the pole in the middle and tons of wasted space all around it, given that it was installed into a 36" corner cabinet.
And yes, I was able to install the shelf and the bigger Susans into an existing cabinet without removing the countertop. It required some decent woodworking and geometry skills, but it worked! I used 1/8" plywood covering some wood "slats" - the thin plywood was flexible enough I could bend it to fit it through the opening. I could have just installed the upper Susan on top of the slats, but the plywood looks nicer and prevents items from falling through.

Hi! My corner cabinet has a 12" opening which makes it super tough to get to items in the back corner. I've been researching the super Susan you mention in the video as well as a regular lazy Susan solution but it looks like the narrow door opening isn't wide enough for these solutions. Am I missing something? Any recommendations? Thanks for your video and help.

    • @ellieem4716

I have the same issue but our opening is slightly wider....but still not big enough for one of these units. The builders I believe messed up and put the stove right up to the other side of the corner, so there isn't even room to put a lazy susan type door or anything around to the other part of the corner because the stove is RIGHT THERE! It's incredibly frustrating!! I've been dealing with this for 9 years and while it used to be the deep abyss where all our party platters, bowls, etc. went, we all dreaded going in for the deep dive to dig things out. I recently changed it up a bit and finally have SOMETHING that is workable and organized (although still a pain to get into). I cleared everything out and squeezed in there to wipe it all down and fit test a few different stackable pieces, facing in different directions to see what would work out best. I ended up putting some larger items that we don't use often on a stackable (holds 3 or 4 altogether) shelf, facing the cabinet door. There is one shelf that runs down the back, the long length of the cabinet. I have things like serving pitchers, bowls, more "specialty" type things that we don't use much in the deep part and things we use more often up towards the front, like my Ninja and a single stackable shelf that I store my Ninja containers/cups and a few other large insulated ones on their side. I also put in those little puck lights that you just put a battery in and peel of the back and stick it onto a surface, which I put about midway back, but within easy reach, so I can now FINALLY easily see what the heck is under there!!! I got a pack on Amazon of about 5 and they were very affordable, but I'm sure they (or something like it) is available elsewhere too, but I HIGHLY recommend adding a light, as not being able to see is a major part of the issue with cabinets like this! Hope this helps!!! I wish there was more affordable options for cabinets like these. You could also install a "pull out drawer" type thing to bring things closer from the way back, but would have to have something in the front that you could easily take out each time. Ok, that's all I got lol!

    • @5metoo

I've not done it, but I think you'd detach the shelf pegs and hold shelf up near top of cabinet while inserting lower LS tray vertically through cabinet opening and then let shelf down onto the cabinet floor (sandwiching the lower LS you just inserted). Then insert the top LS tray vertically through cabinet opening on top of the shelf. Then lift the shelf back where it was and place on the pegs and you'll have an LS tray above and below shelf without removing the shelf from the cabinet.

The most useful corner cabinet I've seen was built with LS inside in an 80's house of my parents. No shelf between and platters spin together. No separate door, and there's a detent so it rocks closed so easily. With a little practice you can spin it once and it closes on it's own. And the cabinet isn't square inside but has a circular wooden shell so stuff doesn't fall off. Sadly, this is too practical and not gimmicky enough nowadays. Now we need separate doors and platters because it looks cooler in demonstrations. In real life use it's generally worse though.

I wanted to put in a corner quasi walk in pantry area in my blind spot corner and I got shot down by everyone. Even showing them pictures, I was told it's not a good idea. Two contractors gave me their own version, and I cried. I flipped my wig. I finally just scrapped the idea because no one was supporting this idea of mine. I'm still salty and we're still in the design stage. I feel like this might ended up being a lifelong sore point in my marriage. I would prefer not to have cabinetry in that corner if I can't use it. And pull out shelving and lazy susans are fugly. I hate both of them.

You may need to hire a carpenter. Someone who makes custom wood pieces. Not a contractor. They don't specialize in custom wood pieces. I believe it can be done especially if you have a photo of it, because that means someone did it already. I have the same problem in a way, I don't want a lazy susan or super susan. I just want a corner cabinet without the lazy susan inside and half the space to be open for storing tall things and other half to have a shelf so I use top and bottom. Yes I will have to reach down in there and it isn't practical but guess what It's what I want. I saw some pics on pinterest with the same ideas too. I want to utilize all of my space. Super Susan's still dont allow you to utilize all the space the way you want. And remember cabinets are just plywood carcass with fancy doors. So when all else fails go buy some plywood and build it yourself with the help of some friends and family. I am getting alot of my ideas on how to build base cabinets from this Rogueengineer and Ana White on youtube. #DIY #Innovative. I wish you well.
