- Intermittent hard starting due to low fuel pressure was solved by a new fuel pump. The KOEO and Idle fuel pressures were low, and the AMP current draw was well below spec, with the resulting diagnosis of a weak pump. I will show you how to drop the fuel tank and install a new fuel pump on the 2000 Oldsmobile Silhouette with 170K miles. (Same as the Chevrolet Venture and the Pontiac Montana.) Delphi Fuel Pump FG0148 - amzn.to/2MALMH5
Should have shown bleed procedure on the fuel pump to avoid excessive fuel spillage when disconnecting the filter
Una pregunta amigo la entrada que va enmedio de las 2 mangueras así va sola.,no lleva ninguna manguera o algún tapón? Saludos cordiales desde Saltillo Coahuila mex.
Dang I actually flinched when the filter pressure shot out . Lol
Very helpful video! thanks for adding in the troubleshooting and testing afterwards!
Thanks for the note. I agonized over the troubleshooting of this project, as the fuel pump never just up and died, which would have made the diagnosis obvious, but kept working albeit weakly. It's been over a year since I did the repair....still running great.
Excellent job man .
Good video. Thanks for posting
Thanks for your video, you teach well! I imagine you eliminated the fuel filter as a cause first since you sound like you know what you are doing. Your electrical measurements and the specs you obtained show you have the patience and knowledge to diagnose instead of throwing parts at it. Am subscribed.
Thanks, Robert. Yes, replacing a fuel pump is too much work to just be "guessing." And this one was especially tricky because it was still working somewhat, not just completely dead. Thanks for watching the video!
thanks man...very helpful...did my venture today.$39 total cost.
Good job, and thanks for watching and commenting.
AutoZone's almost 200. Where'd you get it for? 39. You don't mind me asking.
thankyou for the video, it was very helpful.
Thank you, glad the video was helpful.
WOW! What an ordeal. Now i see why the shop's charge so much. Think mine is gone, I've tested what needs to be tested and it all points to that. I've got a '99 Montana with well over 200,000 miles and have never had it replaced, so pretty sure....it's time.
Thanks again for sharing this...GREAT video!!
Thank you, and good luck!
Great vid! Daddy! 👍🏻
Good video
Great video!
Thank you so much!
Doing my Venture today. Thanks for the heads up. A couple things, pull the fuel pump fuse and start the car, fuel pressure relieved. Second, I noticed you didn't use a new sock on the new pump. Voids the warranty. Old car who cares. :)
Thanks for the note. Good luck on your project today!
I have a 2001 Chevy venture 13 months ago I had problems with my gas gauge not working correctly then I would lose power when stopping or even when taking off. I had a new fuel pump put on 3 weeks ago and sending unit still doing same so I got another new one and I just had that one put in today and I’m still having the same problem. My gas gauge isn’t working correctly. My wires are good and my fuses are good. I’m lost on what to do now
P.S. No need to undo brace to pull out the fuse relay center, you can slide it along the brace. Nice video overview.
Thank you Yuriy!
Does the silhouette has a anti siphon on them
Thx
I recently discovered assembly lube. It would hold that gasket in place while making the tightening of that ring a lot easier, and more secure. It's a glue and a lube in one.
Thank you for the good recommendation.
Yep used it at Caterpillar but never thought to buy it for home jobs🤔🤷♂️
To bad they didnt make an access port hole in the floor under the carpet that would allow you to get to this without removing the tank.
some of the Gran Prix models did
i made my own by cutting a hole in my 2003 mustang spare tire well- $11 pump and easier next change
I’m lost what to do. I had 2 fuel pumps put in and neither is giving me a accurate gas gauge. My gas gauge isn’t working correctly. What do I do now? My cluster instrument is good. Relay fuse and fuel pump fuse is good. Wires seemed good. Does anyone know why my gas gauge isn’t working correctly
Thank you for your video. Just acquired a 2000 Olds Silhouette. Starts and runs just fine, but the fuel bump growls pretty loudly, and the supply line pulsates pretty significantly. Sounds like it might be a good idea to pressure test the system (key off /not running & running) and then also test the amp draw on the fuse you show in the video. Does this sound like the correct first steps? Thank you for any help you can provide!
Yes, I suppose the noise could indicate that the pump could be on its way out. Those would be useful tests to run. It would be worthwhile to change out the fuel filter if you haven't done so already. Fuel pressure regulator might also be worth checking. Start with the easy stuff before condemning the pump.
Good video on removal now can you tteeme where the vent valve solinoid sat on the tank ?
The exact location and what secures it to the tank . Is it in the recess right by the pump or on the first ledge by the front end of the tank ? Is there a clip to secure irt ? Thank you
I'm pretty sure it's located remotely, not on the tank itself.
Hey Mister, great vid. gotta 2002 Pontiac Montana 7 seater. Im thinking its close to yours. Did you consider getting in through the floor. I wondering if easier since my tools are limited.
I think I saw a video of a guy removing the seats and carpet from his minivan, and cutting a hole in the floor to access the fuel pump. Looked like a complete nightmare to me. I'd drop the tank if I were you....
On a 1- 10 difficulty scale, 10 being the most difficult, how difficult was it getting the tank back up in and the vent tube reconnected properly? And what/where did you connect that pressure guage to in the engine bay?
If say a 5 or 6 on the difficulty scale. The fuel pressure gauge connects to a Schrader valve on the fuel rail at the engine.
Very helpful! Thanks! . My chevy venture has 2010k miles. And a month ago started with hard starts. Pulley tensioner moving a lot. So i replaced. Even spark plugs. Fuel filter. Hair filter erg valve. Cleaned the pcv valve. Removed the carburetor. Cleaned. . Still same shitt. So i noticed the fuel lines are empty after an hour or so. Will be this my problem?. And sometimes running the van shuts down it self. I start again and keep moving. Not often. But yes. So if you can respond to this. Thanks again!
What year is your venture? they were made from 97-05, so surely it is fuel injected, not carbureted. So your comments about removing the carburetor are puzzling. Possibly you mean the throttle body? Is the check engine light on? If so, get a scan tool and see what diagnostic trouble codes are being set. Some places will do the scan for you for no cost. That may help you identify the source of the problem, or at least point you in the right direction. Good luck.
@@Buckwsr yes you are right. Is 05. Check engine is on. (2 sensors in muffler). Bank 1 and 2. That's all in scanner
Thanks. For answering
My 03 venture had a weird issue.... one time I cold started the van and a minute later I had to go back in my house to get something I forgot so I shut the van off then when I got back in the van to restart it it wouldn't start I had to crank it 3 times than it started up which I thought was weird..... the van was up to date with maintenance new sparks oil change new head gasket fuel filter etc. Any feed back on something like that? And I would notice that there where times that I would drive to a store or whatever and when I would come out from the store to the van and would start it I would have to crank it twice for it to start
Not sure what to suggest. Hope you can figure it out. As long as it starts, you're okay, right?
Can u tell me what is sopose to be concerned to the center elbow on the pump I general work on older Chevys but I'm helping a disabled friend because the that took it off hasn't come back in to day it's on a Pontiac Montana but they are basically the same
There are two fuel lines (pressure line and return line), and one wiring harness with two connectors. That's it.
Since you had a fuel pressure tester connected at the engine, there must be a schrader valve near there. One of the first steps should have been to bleed the fuel pressure at the valve before disconnecting any lines at the tank or filter. That would have prevented the fuel spraying all over the place when you disconnected the line. There will still be some dripping - especially from the filter but nothing like what you experienced.
Good point. Not sure why I didn't de-pressurize the line first.... Possibly I just forgot....
@@Buckwsr LOL! It happens! I didn't search through all of the comments to see if that had already been mentioned but I assume someone looking at your video might not do that either so now it's more "on top". Besides, not all vehicles were blessed with a schrader valve on the fuel line.
Wow ! Good tip on how to relieve fuel pressure at the value at the engine. Thanks!
@@justilianoacevedo2185 In another video I saw someone remove the fuel pump fuse and start the engine to depressurize it. I guess the engine fed off the pressure that was built up until it couldn’t run anymore.
Go through the floor under driver side middle passenger seat.
Cut,replace,re seal. Done
yeah, ok
1 glove or 2 gloves ?
"hey daddy" thats cool (Y)
Might I say you did a exalent job.. Mmm quick question can you replace mine please ..
Thanks for the kind words!
How long did it take you to change out the fuel pump? I need to do the same on my aunts van.
I did it on a January afternoon, finished at dusk, so I'd say 4 or 5 hours total, working by myself.
could have run it with the fuel pump fuse removed until it stalled.
Oh yes, almost forgot' where did you get your specs print out, those will come handy. Do you have a link? Tx again!
I totally don't remember. I must have searched online and found a document with all the GM fuel pump pressures.
What I like about Nissans they are mostly underneath the back seat no gas take removal
Could have given the cost of fuel pump. Just a little more info to the world of car repair. Thanks great video
Thanks for the note. I don't remember the cost of the pump, probably about $100....easy enough to look it up online....
I sure wish you showed the location of the fuel filter. I have a 2002 Silo Premier and have great difficulty getting under the van.
Its mounted on the frame under the vehicle, driver's side, about halfway down the length of the van....good luck.
Thank You.@@Buckwsr When I was a lot younger I spent a lot of time under vehicles but I'll be 90 in a few months and things are a little difficult to do.

But why would you only need one glove “right now” what condition would need to change which would warrant a 2nd glove?
I'm sure I started out with two gloves. I have no recollection as to why I would have taken one off. I really have no idea. Kids sure are funny though, aren't they?
Did you measure your wheel base BEFORE getting your new FUEL PUMP?? 112" wheel base gets the DFG0216 FUEL PUMP, 120" wheel base gets the DFGO148.
Good info. Thanks.
Fuel pressure can be released in the engine bay rather than at the filter.
Good point. Thanks.
"Daddy why do you only have 1 glove on"
"Daddy"
"Daddy"
"daddy"
I notice you dident put a screen on the bottom of the pump like the old one had.
I think the new pump was an upgraded design and did not require that filter sleeve....
"Daddy, why do you only have one glove?" "Baby, if one glove was good enough for Michael Jackson, it's good enough for your old man." (Very helpful vid, by the way!)
Nice! Kids sure are funny. So whenever I'm making a video and they talk to me or interrupt, I keep it in there and don't edit it out. Glad the video was helpful to you.
Ha ha ha! Great response! Dady
I'm guessing after seeing this I need a fuel pump 😢 I have an 2004 Oldsmobile silhouette too.
Well, it's a lot of work, so I hope you're able to do more than just guess....
Well the mechanics tested everything else. So I guess they got to do the pressure testing. For the fuel pump fuel sensor, fuel filter. Idk it's frustrating
Did it clear your p0 171 code
It starts easily now and runs fine with the new fuel pump. The P0171 still continues to be a pain in my side. But I'm not going to worry about it now, as the car is not due for inspection till July of 2020.
Check for vacuum leak for that p0171
Kid asks "daddy why only one glove?'" What would WC Fields have said ? Dont cha just love em ? asks good question gets silly answer
“P0171,” you say? Mine was a pinhole in a rotted rubber cap on the intake manifold. Same year.
That said, I got a P0452 a week later and the shop is trying to tell me they can’t find the “EVAP system pressure switch” it needs. From what I can tell it’s readily available and goes right into the fuel pump… which they replaced a year ago with a noisy piece of aftermarket junk that was within a dollar of the OEM GM part. They probably just don’t want to admit it’s the pump since they’d be on the hook. Crooks even stole 12.5 gallons of gas.
You should have measured the wheel base in order to get the PROPER FUEL PUMP MODULE. NEW PUMP DOESN'T MEAN QUALITY PUMP. IF IT ISN'T ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT MANUFACTURED, CHANCES ARE IT IS A JUNK AIRTEX FUEL PUMP. BROKE BEFORE INSTALLED AIRTEX PUMPS LAST ABOUT 1 - 2 YEARS BEFORE TOTAL FAILURE. I HAD A 2000 GMC SAFARI MINIVAN AND IT ATE 4 FUEL PUMPS IN 6 YRS. TOO BAD THEY WASN'T AC DELCO OR DELPHI FUEL PUMPS. YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR!!!
Did you watch the video? Did you not see that I bought a Delphi fuel pump? It's too much work to use low quality parts. And your comment about measuring the wheel base makes no sense to me in the current context....
Your filter looks extremely plugged
You will never get the proper lbs and current unless you buy OEM parts. After market parts will never meet the right specs
