  • "It's a terrific project. The sound I am hearing from these records is so clear", says Michael Fremer. Five experts discuss the production and technical processes of The Original Source, a new series of celebrated albums reissued on vinyl. The renowned Berlin-based Emil Berliner Studios are remastering 4-track recordings from the 1970s, using their own cutting-edge and 100% pure analogue techniques to create versions of the highest possible audio quality. Produced on 180g virgin vinyl by Optimal, the discs are being issued in deluxe gatefold editions featuring additional photos and recording documentation.
Michael Fremer: is an American music journalist from New York City, an ‘analogue Guru’ highly acclaimed for writing about audiophile equipment and vinyl. He is the editor of “TrackingAngle.com” and Editor at Large at „The Absolute Sound “. Due to his influence within the audiophile community, he has been called the "dean of audiophile writing."
Mark Ward: is a Peabody award-winning radio producer, filmmaker and writer, whose programs have aired on National Public Radio, the BBC World Service, and other international networks. He has written for the Financial Times and the Boston Globe, and is a regular contributor to Michael Fremer's trackingangle.com, specializing in classical and film music.
Thomas Mowrey: is a renowned Executive Producer, Producer and Director of classical music sound recordings and films. Formerly Producer and U.S. Marketing Director for Deutsche Grammophon he produced some of DG’s legendary recordings. He is also one of the original developers of Surround Sound recording and godfather of the quadrophonic sound.
Rainer Maillard: was hired by Deutsche Grammophon as a sound engineer in 1990 and subsequently worked for the most renowned artists of classical music. In that capacity, he won four GRAMMY Awards. He has been a producer and managing director of Emil Berliner Studios since 2008 and has specialized in purely analogue recordings. He is the mastermind behind the Original Source series and has mixed all titles.
Sidney Claire Meyer: is a sound engineer and has been with Emil Berliner Studios since 2017. In the field of vinyl mastering, she holds the scepter in her hand and ensures the »golden cut«. She learned the rare craft under Rainer Maillard in Berlin and Kevin Gray in Los Angeles. She also takes quality control personally and has been cutting all the Original Source titles.

Greetings from Argentina. It is impressive and wonderful to listen and see this video, with so many notable people from the world of audio and music, and to know the technological marvel that they have achieved, congratulations!!! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 Obviously, DG's great historical trajectory was once again revealed, at the pinnacle of quality audio, with this long-awaited international breakthrough.
I am neither an engineer nor a technician, I am an audiophile who has worked in the pro world and was sure that one day the old analog records could be improved in pure analog form. I have a few vintage DG vinyls that were my parents' forty to fifty years old and while some are a bit weathered from the old stylus used when I was a kid, I still listen to them. How I would like this material to arrive in these southern lands and to be able to buy the same masterful vinyl records by Karajan, Yepes, Vivaldi, Beethoven, etc. again. Would be wonderful.
It would be very interesting, if you are so kind, to know an opinion from the wonderful engineers Rainer and Sidney, on what needle cut they would recommend to reproduce these new Original Source Series vinyls. It would be an important opinion for audiophiles.
Thank you very much in advance and please flood the world with vinyls from this new series.

So great discussion. I enjoyed every one of these 93 minutes. There seems to be so much passion in this hole project - I am so impressed, just wow! Anyhow, what Rainer and Sidney-Claire are doing for the classics genre, is absolutely incredible. Big thumbs up!

I now own five of these original source LPs and I return to them over and over. Simply thrilling to listen to. It feels like the musicians are right in the room and zero listening fatigue, even on my modest mid range system.

Thank you for this great overview discussion. I suggest a larger printing and not a low number limited edition. Interest in this series is world-wide. Identify the best and bring it all out.

Great project - by skipping the 1/4 inch tape step, as well as implementing the different stylus geometry (shibata-like?) and other improvements, these are bound to sound much better than anything released at the time. Looking forward to a listen! As a fan of both analogue and (high resolution) digital, I would also love to see those copied to 4-channel SACDs, so you can have each separate channel in the final format, without downmixing.

WHY cant we have blu-rays of the original quad recordings in THAT format?????

In my ideal " audiophile world " today i would like these DGG tapes ( and others ) to bypass transfer yet again to those black vinyl discs and shiny smaller silver digital ones i have spent a lot of money on these past 50 + years . I would like to hear them copied directly as high quality transfers to high grade low / noise Reel to Reel tapes at a reasonable purchase price. Oh well i suppose i can always dream ! 😉😀

DG? The company that said that vinyl has 40 dB maximum dynamic range?

I have theory about analog sound and why it speaks to the soul and digital does not. Digital is not the sound wave in its natural state as is analog, I.E. oscillating with its natural curves.
Digital bastardizes or chops it up, you might not "hear" it but you feel and understand it on a deeper level.
I know about matrix Thomas. Thank you Thomas for quad and for the discussion here, very informative. i am still rocking a quad system with 4 AR2ax speakers. I want some real quadraphonic mix releases. PLEASE.

I'm so tired of record companies asking customers to buy the same discs over and over again. I know it is voluntary, but still. I bought the Mahler 5 with Karajan when it was first released and also later CD versions. I also bought the Blu-tay release in the series DG calls Pure audio, And now... no thanks. Also, if these new ones are so much better why have you produced sub par editions for so many years?

    • @RafaelGarciaMarquez

Believe me. If your audio set up is up to the task (and mine is mid range) the improvement compared with the ,
70's pressings and 2010's reissues is truly impressive.
I see your point and can't agree more. Major labels are squeezing customer's wallets with a catalogue they've already sold us plenty of times in different formats, but this is really worth paying attention too.
I was reluctant, but after listening to Abbado's Stravinsky and Kleiber's Beethoven I was fully convinced.

@@RafaelGarciaMarquez I don't doubt for a second that these releases sound excellent but since they apparently are so well recorded we should have gotten better sounding CDs and Blu-rays earlier. They were just being lazy money grabbers. But as I said earlier I'm happy for vinyl collectors who can afford and find these limited editions. But as a CD, SACD and Blu-ray collector I feel cheated.

Thomas, you made the right choice and the right purchase at the right time for you. None of us could predict the future and how technology would advance. Hopefully you have had lots of pleasure from your discs. Classical re-issues have been ignored for too long. I completely agree with your observation of record companies squeezing all of us for yet another version of a UBIQUITOUS record.. How many versions of KIND OF BLUE does one really need?!

It's too bad these records are absurdly OVERPRICED VINYL and out of reach for most people who actually work for a living.

Lets talk about Le Sacre. I bought this in the 1980's. Abaddo and the LSO were the best thing ever. A visceral performance that converted me to Stravinsky. Fast forward to 90s. OK CD it is, a brave new world. No! it was a bitter disappointment. At the time I just did not understand. CD was supposed to be better right? Now I understand that this was just a cheap transfer of medium. Shame on DG. Now in 2023 a 'new and improved' vinyl edition is out. Maybe yes, maybe no. I would rather be tied on a slab in a dungeon in Transylvania with Vlad the Impaler about to use me to prove his thesis that the Marquis De Sade was but an amateur; than be gouged for another improvement - sorry DG but this is Cry Wolf.
