    Kayak fishing dry suits are an important but significant financial investment for the kayak angler. There are a wide variety of designs on the market which may or may not suit your body type and style of fishing. In this video I compare and contrast two different kayak fishing drysuits but you can apply the same comparisons to other immersion gear from other manufacturers when shopping for your own drysuit.
    Drysuits featured in this video:
    - ‪@LevelSixInc‬ Emperor www.levelsix.com/collections/...
    - ‪@MustangSurvival‬ Hudson www.avantlink.com/click.php?t...

    If doing sea kayaking I would recommend not only hi-viz colour but also a device to send an alert signal out, always attached or in your drysuit. Something like a Garmin in reach mini. Hypothermia and cold water shock as I’m reading is a killer. Recently A swimmer who was swept out to sea was rescued by HM Coastguard after her pink float and hat were spotted from the shore ( 7th November 2021 Little Fistral beach in Newquay, Cornwall, England).

    Great video Tyler. I've been checking out suits since I watched your 1st video on dry suits. There's a dive shop by me that does repairs, after mentioning my concerns about durability and 30+ years of never finding a pair that'll last 2 seasons he recommended that I wear another protective layer over the dry/semi dry suit. That made think of wearing something like a bib or older pair of breathable waders that I've cut the feet off of. Have ever tried this? I've been hesitant so far but will be purchasing something in the near future. The obvious relief zipper is a must for me and the latex around the neck drives me crazy. I'm leading towards the Kokatat Supernova with perhaps a breathable wader bottom. Thanks and keep up the great video's sir!

    • @spiltmilt
      @spiltmilt  2 роки тому +1

      I really would not want to wear a second layer on top of my drysuit. It would be so bulky and cumbersome at that point and would likely hinder self rescue. I'd steer clear of the Supernova Hydrus as that material is too thin and fragile. They do make one in Goretex that might be more durable.

    Can't find the level six anywhere. It's all sold out. Did find a batch of new Mustangs in my size. So was debating between that and the Kokatat which is 20% off right now. So finding this video is perfect timing. Looks like the Mustang it is.

    Had been looking at the Emporer a few years ago. The inconvenience of the rear entry was a deal breaker, so when LevelSix came out with the Odin, I jumped on that. Mainly because I can jump into it.

    • @supdru
      @supdru 2 роки тому +1

      I bought the Level Six Odin this year as well. Front entry was also a requirement. It was between the Mustang Hudson and the Odin. My first choice was the Hudson with the neoprene cuffs and adjustable neck but they didn't have it in my size so I went for the Odin. It's great but for comfort level I'll go for the Hudson next time.

      @@supdru Ah...for me the latex was a plus. I’m out on Superior sometimes(from Thunder Bay) and I don’t want ANY water in my suit. A few feet down it can be cold year-round, spring and fall especially.

    Hi Tyler, excellent video! The Mustang seems to be exactly what I'm looking for. A question about your boots if I may; Did you have to go up in size for the boots to fit over the Mustang suit? The reason I ask is that I assume you will be wearing reasonably warm socks and I think you mentioned that there is some sort of sole built into the feet of the suit. Thanks again for the very informative video, keep up the good work.

  • @greenmachineangler
    @greenmachineangler 2 роки тому +4

    That Mustang looks like a slam dunk to me. I really like the front-load, single zipper, the neck system, and the neoprene wrist gaskets. Like you said, with kayak angling, the latex is a bit of overkill. Are you find any wear from your beard on the neck system?

    • @spiltmilt
      @spiltmilt  2 роки тому +2

      Part of the reason I decided to make the switch. I was getting a ton of skin irritation around the beard with the latex. Much less of an issue with the Mustang.

  • @MrScrappydo17

    i used to do triathlons and the wetsuits always had a long strap on the back zipper - say about 18" long or so (guessing length). With this, one could just zip up/down the entire back (from butt to neck) with that strap. Wondering if one can be added to the zipper pull and achieve the ability to zip/unzip on your own away from the vehicle system you're currently using

    Looks like the warranty is only for two years but if it's fairly durable that might not be an issue.

    • @spiltmilt

      It's warmer than my Kokatat Supernova (also more durable) so I tend to go lighter layering underneath in cooler weather and do okay not getting to warm. The key is to use moisture wicking clothing like polyester or fleece. You will have excellent range of motion for paddling.

    I was lucky and found a used NRS for $400, normally $1200. I still can’t believe they cost that much though. How do you tell if your dry suit is wearing out before you go full submersion to test the seams and zippers?

    • @spiltmilt
      @spiltmilt  2 роки тому +1

      You'll begin to notice "wet spots" especially when it rains. Also periodically check for delamination inside where the layers of fabric begin to break apart or degrade. Also check for tears or cracking in the seam tape.
