GM didn't destroy SAAB they did that themselves. SAAB was already on the path to going under before GM took over. When GM told SAAB to conform to GM supply and design philosophy, what did SAAB do, none of the above and kept on making weird money losing cars.

What I especially like about this car is that it carries the old Saab way of doing things in today's era. As always, they didn't just build a car as everyone else would do, but they engineered their own way. I would be so proud owning one of them. Investor AB (who owns a number of other Swedish companies) should take over this company, and Saab should lend them their trademark. It's important that it's called Saab and nothing else. The brand value is still there.

My second car was a 1969 Saab 96. The collapsible steering wheel prevented serious injury. I was going 40mph through an intersection when a van turned left in front of me. We had no seat belts. The steering wheel was flattened against the dash. All I had were minor bruises on my chest. And a small gash on my forehead, from the rear view mirror, I suspect.

Backlash is a term that describes a phenomenon in gear transmission. Its actually when the teeth of the gears don't touch each other and then suddenly when troque is applied, the teeth touch and you feel like a harsh blow.
So my guess is to reduce this sensation they used the hub motor with planetary gears system which creates a smoother torque output. I also guess this is how they manage torque vectoring as well.

    • @lyndonthan4350
      @lyndonthan4350 Рік тому +1

Yes. Backlash is the slight space between gear teeth. Its called backlash, because you don't get any play after initial engagement, except when there is a torque reversal. Then the backlash is noticed. It leads to numerous issues in drivetrains for both cars and industrial machinery. There are various methods of managing it. Skewed gear teeth can reduce it, as well as anti-backlash gearsets, etc. But all strategies come with their own issues.

Correction: NEVS Emily GT was developed in just 10 months. Owners Evergrande asked for a car using hub motors. Considering the total development time for a production line car is ~5 years Emily GT is incredible!
Also, GM basically killed SAAB by not allowing the buyers to continue producing the new line of 9-3s and 9-5s, which had then been developed for ~5 years. Have one of the very few 9-5s that were produced before the selloff, great car!

It's pushing around 3.5 kWh per mile. A few other cars are pushing at least 4.5 kWh / mile. To put that into context, with a 175 kWh battery that'd be a range of 787.5 miles instead of 620 miles which is a hell of a lot further

I don't think the rotating mass is greater on hub motors. The centre of the hub stays still - only the outer rim with the tire attached actually moves. With few components moving there's less friction, so I believe the efficiency should be better. The stability will be better as well, as the weight is even lower. Turning moment will be higher than having the weight closer to the center of the vehicle, though this might not even be realized by the car/driver because that weight is being directly moved by the fact that it's directly coupled to ground. The unsprung weight and the durability are the main issues. I'd love an off-roading vehicle with massive hub motors for full, independent control over each wheel's torque, and the lower centre of gravity.

    • @rogerbritus9378

@@rogerbritus9378 I'm thinking specifically for trails and terrain where youre going slow enough that the wheels are always kept down by gravity and not thrown up at the vehicle, so the unsprung weight doesn't really matter, but precise control over torque in every wheel and extra stability would be very beneficial.

"Backlash" is sometimes called "slop" - the free play, in this case, between the rotation of the engine and the delayed rotation of the wheel.
In an ICE car, drive backlash is caused by the transmission gears, the drive shaft, the universal joints, and the differential's gears. In an EV,
the drive backlash is in the drive shaft universal joints. In an EV with hub motors, the only free play is in worn bearing surfaces. In normal
driving, backlash is experienced in stop-n-go traffic as a jerk as the free play is taken up before acceleration or deceleration occurs. In an
EV with regen, the jerk occurs when one presses and lets up on the accelerator pedal.

Hub motors wouldn't have the gears so wouldn't have the backlash. Is technically true but doubt you would notice it at all when driving.

Backlash or more correctly Hysteresis is more commonly described as "play". There needs to be very very small gaps between components to allow for temperature changes and assembly. These small clearances add up to one not so small clearance overall. Thus the motor may turn 2⁰ or 3⁰ before the wheels start to turn.

I'd like to see Saab return with something truly innovative, and taking the design in a direction where everybody should be going. Something which combines the thinking behind Citroen's Oli, that is to say an absolute priority on making the car as light and sustainable as possibe. But combined with an ultra aerodynamic shape which takes inspiration from Saab's original teardrop shaped cars. These cars would not be out to rewrite the rules on range per se, but on maximising how far it was possible to go on each kWh of power. Ultimate performance would not be a factor beyond being "sufficient", but the aerodynamics would mean very efficient cruising at higher speeds and the light weight would mean the same in the city.

In-hub motors increase not only the rotational inertia of the wheel to make the car have slower response to power and braking,
but it also increases the UN-SPRUNG MASS of the wheel, making it harder for the shock absorbers to control the bounce of
the wheel when it hits road bumps. The result is that the tire is not pressed onto the pavement uniformly as it bounces up and
down, and the traction of the tire in forward/backward and side-to-side directions changes, sometimes enough to lose directional
control. Typically, it lengthens braking or acceleration distances, or reduces cornering control, on ripply roads. The reason behind
aluminum/magnesium alloy wheels is the reduction of un-sprung mass.

There is no point in torque vectoring with wheels aligned forward, because they have to scrub the tyres excessively, particularly on corner blocks around town. Torque vectoring is only good for miniscule inputs to slightly reduce cornering forces at the limits. In any case, motors don't need to be in-hub to do it, and there are so many strong reasons to keep them out of the wheels.

NEVS might have the factory, but they dont have the name, and they dont have the upper management 'SAAB-Think'. That is to design a thing properly. Thats why architects and graphic designers loved em, they did design their own way, not the way other car manufacturers were doing it.
Take SAAB's climate system. Vacuum driven by the engine, it could give a stream of fresh cold air to your face whilst warming your toes. It pioneered the 'third break light', gave us opening doors in the event of a front end impact, ergonomic design principals, out of the box thinking.
And maaaan, that factory turbo was great!
You could lie flat with the back seat down (zero bumps) and a 6" person could stretch out. All controls accessible wile keeping both hands on the steering wheel.
a bullet proof engine. worth a million k'm's.
Manufacturing could happen at a local level again.... but big business has gone global and that is what controls the market now. For now.
The Lima Agreement (1973-75) was an international trade agreement that shifted manufacturing to the developing world. Here in Australia we lost our entire manufacturing industry, and we had it in spades.

Backlash: Any set of gears will have some sort of "tolerance." There will be at least a tiny gap between the gear teeth. If not at first, then when they wear in. When you first put pressure on the front of the teeth (acceleration) and then switch to putting pressure on the rear of the teeth (deceleration) that little gap can be felt as "backlash." Think of it as "slack" in the drivetrain. Big sloppy trucks with all sorts of differentials and transfer cases end up having quite a bit of this backlash. Doesn't matter when you're slogging through mud. But not so great when driving a high-performance sedan. Hub motors would eliminate every one of these sources of backlash and should feel silky smooth in transition from positive to negative pressure.

  • @rdp131
    @rdp131 Рік тому

Backlash is the space in between the gear teeth/drive train, with hub motors no gears are required as it is direct drive. Modern EV's have a motor connected to a gear reduction module, like tesla, lucid, kia, hyundai, mach-e, etc. With these systems you have to have some backlash or the gears will be too tight and wear out/generate more heat = inefficiency.

We already know for a while that long range EVs are feasible. This is just an example. Tesla’s semi with max load has a range of 500 miles. Ultimately every car maker has a finite supply of batteries and needs to decide how to deploy them. If you have 240kw, would you rather produce 2 cars with 120kw (500+ miles), 3 cars at 80kw, or 4cars at 60kw. Overall car efficiency also plays a role. This results in different volumes, revenues and profitability. On the other hand, consumers will need to decide whether they are willing to shell out more dollars for high mile range. In due course, with battery supply growing and battery costs dropping, average miles offered will go up. It’s clear that technology is already there. Lower costs will certainly follow.
