I find myself legitimately happy when I see a Paul upload, because it feels like I can hang out with "virtual PC dad" again! Love the content, love the doggos, love the personality. Here's to you!
I will say, Paul, the video that the camera picked up THROUGH OBS with your compression WAS DROPPING FRAMES OFTEN, making the video hard to watch personally. As a viewer, I'd say do NOT make videos with it yet until the software you use gets updated to support the camera/capture card's 4k imput.
It does just fine capturing 4K 8-bit from the GH4 so I'll probably do that for now, I need to set up faster storage to capture the higher bit rate option though, I think that's what was causing the dropped frames
Paul's Hardware Oh yeah, I forgot you mentioned the slow external storage! If the frames stop dropping with something faster, then awesome! On that note, OHH MAN Paul replied to my comment. This made my day!
Paul, I recognize you are thousands of miles ahead of me, technology-wise. My question about this DeckLink Mini Recorder 4K is waaay less complicated. Never mind 4K, either (LOL). I have been able to capture video from the TV using it and the Blackmagic Media Express, but I have been unable to hear the audio of any given portion of captured media WHILE I am capturing it. The audio is there and I can hear it only AFTER I perform the capturing process. Would you know the trick to make it happen? BTW, I am using a MacPro (Late 2013 model) and the DeckLink is inside a Sonnet Echo Thunderbolt 2 box. Thanks for your attention!
Yes. Normal video has a frame rate of 30 frames per second. 24 frames per second video will look slow or stuttery. To some video producers that is a desired look. It looks more like film. Because movies are shot using 24 frames per second. So that is actually not the fault of the capture card. That's just the frame rate that was selected. I went to school for video production that's how I know these things
anyone else notice the video get choppy when it switched to the capture card recording at around 7:00 ? i think it's because of it recording at 24fps but the video is rendered at 30fps
Paul I've used the black magic decklink cards for sometime and here is my experience with them. The cards just downright don't support any other screen ratios apart from 16:9 and some random 4:3 resolutions and also using the decklink with PCs as input requires the pc to be outputting 30 fps in the graphics driver. If you ever get a black screen in media express, chances are it is incompatible settings and resolution. Black magic products are built for very specific situations and they don't tend to get updated with features often. Even my Black magic camera doesn't have a delete function :)
Be interesting to see how this works out in the future. When I upgrade my PC I'm thinking about using the old one to as a streaming rig, but this hinges on 4k capture cards being up to the job!
have you tried to use obs via nvenc? if you go to advance setting and choose nvenc preset to "lossless" you can get very high bitrate video (about 3.4gb per min) and I am not sure about color sertings but try nvenc lossless settings. (no frame drop)
Paul. I Could be wrong but I remember reading somewhere that if you feed some of those capture devices more FPS than they are meant for they will not work IIRC. I could be wrong, just throwing that out there.
Learned about MediaInfo and installed. Handy tool. Thanks for that. I don't have need for 4k capture, but it was a good review for me to see your trial and error. Thanks for sharing!
Did you tried 29fps instead of 30fps from 4k monitor? I wanna record a 4k30 monitor for Mixed Reality and barely found useful reviews on Blackmagic 4k capture card.
Hello! Maybe today u find some solution to record 10-12 bit 4:4:4 or 4:2:2? I use declink quad hdmi but seems it can do high bit depth on single port while for few there is HDYC 10 bit (mean 4:2:2) 😢
Paul Hello guy. could you help me please, this hdmi adapter cable that you put in the camera on video 5:45 minute, has on ebay? could send the link of the same cable so i can buy. Thanks a lot man.
What is the best way to stream 3 cameras to the internet live? Should I get a Blackmagic Design Decklink SDI 4K Capture & Playback Card with three inputs? Is that all I need?
Thank you for done this video. The spec of thsi card in their website doesn't show Rec.2020 support. Thank you for video, this helps a lot. And, by the way, what camera you use for shoot this video? The 4K Res looks great!!!!!
Your problem is propably HDCP2.2 related. HDCP is a bitch. It works fine with 1 source and 1 screen, but it starts bitching around the more you are trying to do. get a HDMI 2.0 Splitter with edid emulation and you should be fine However, thats the reason SDI is so popular in broadcast situations. It just works and has no hdcp crap embedded
If I were into that as much as you, I'd try to find out what Kit Guru uses. Oh, and Dmitri of Hardware Canucks, but especially Kit Guru. His video is exceptional.
Whats that internal port on the upper edge of the PCB and what is it for? I looked at the specs of the card on Blackmagic's site and there's no mention or label on the diagram.
flahr1 Yeah, i still got an BNC Cable lying around, first used for 10Base 2 Ethernet (with those Terminator Plugs at the end) and then as an Antenna Cable for a Radio Scanner.
I am thinking about purchasing this for OBS 4K streaming/recording. I have a HDMI 2.0b splitter that works for outputting 4K60 to my monitor and to a Smartooo 36r1 downscaler that scales the 2160p60 to 1080p60 for my Elgato HD60 Pro. Everything works perfectly but unfortunately only captures 1080p60. My question is will the Decklink Mini Recorder 4K accept a 2160p60 signal and capture at 2160p30? I would be using the device to capture gameplay from a Playstation 4 Pro and it only outputs 2160p60 as it's 4K resolution. Any information you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Sir.
Hello Sir, I purchased one Decklink Mini Recorder and one Intensity Pro 4k. I installed both the cards in my pc but only one input is coming related to pro 4k and decklink mini recorder is not working. Please help
The disadvantage to using anything Blackmagic has always been software support. Their hardware seems to be able to do what it says but the number of hoops you have to jump through and the amount of problems that it seems to generate are generally not worth the hassle.
Seems like it might work for low cost streaming set up for camera in a capture system, but that's about it? Or if someone wanted to do video work to a computer instead of an sd card for some reason? Seems an interesting product, for sure
If I don't care about 4k but just want to record my PS3 and maybe stream it on twitch, what is the best? A portable like the Elgato shown in this video, or a PCI-E one?
Paul, this is completely unnecessary for recording videos for UA-cam. Having 10 Bit color will only increase storage requirements, and slow down your workflow. PC screen capture might be useful, but 21:9 capture will have letter boxing making the image difficult to view for your audience. I do have some experience with capture cards. Thank you for the awesome reviews and tutorials!
The main reason I want to capture 21:9 3440x1440 is so I can run live gaming benchmarks and show the actual footage/framerate. I agree that 10bit color is wasted on UA-cam, but having better source footage can improve the quality of final renders. Thanks for the comment!
He might be trying to future-proof himself. When HDR monitors become more popular his 10 Bit videos will look much better than other channels on those monitors.
Lars Bolduc Interesting Idea. The Dynamic Range is determined and limited by the camera's sensor. 10 Bit refers to the amount of color data. As of today, UA-cam will not accept HDR videos. Unless the final media is 4K Blu-ray with Dolby Vision or HDR10, the cost and storage requirements increase exponentially. Camera tech is changing and improving each year, future proofing for web content is difficult.
Lars Bolduc I had the opportunity to play my 4K footage on a 4K UHD 10 Bit HDR TV. The image looked amazing! Streaming 10 Bit HDR video will need an incredibly fast connection and processor.
I understand it's definitely not possible today, but maybe UA-cam will someday open up the option for HDR video. I'm very excited for HDR, can't wait for the Windows update which will bring HDR support and for monitors to come out so I can buy one!
+NinetyFour it's worked great for me, there's an Avermedia version that's very similar too. I haven't tried the elgato HD 60 yet though but I've heard good things
I always appreciate it when you, Kyle, Jay, or Barnacules, or other youtubers, show their different set-ups. I feel it's always great information for everyone to know how everyone do their recordings, and it even helps me figure out ways that I, or others, can do recording.
Do you have any capture cards you can recommend that can do 1080p 60fps with a duplicated display type setup? looking at elgato but i hear it has bad problems with OBS
If I use something like the Ripsaw to record to another computer there shouldn't be any delay to my actual gaming monitor correct? , Damir can also answer also looking at the 60 Pro..
i know with certain 4k panels you can only get an image to extend etc if hdr colour mode is set to on. may be the issue you are having. it sounds wrong i know. but the samsung panels need this for example to show the image even when detected from windows.
Some cameras support settings (either resolution, color, or framerate related) that can't work with internal storage because SD cards are generally too slow. The direct link to PC is also convenient because editorial staff don't have to go back and forth between the camera and the PC when they need to change some settings or check if the video is correct.
Capture cards are best used for live broadcast signals. Depending on the camera, recording to a PC/capture card allows for uncompressed capture right from the camera's sensor. Writing to a memory card in the camera most often requires compression reducing image quality and color information.
Hey Paul, I have Windows 10 Pro installed on an hdd in my old pc, if I move that hdd to a new pc, (new hardware), will Windows deactivate, and if so, do I just need to type in the product key again to reactivate? Also, this is a legit version of Windows, not bought off of a shady website. I know I asked this on an older video, but I'm asking again because it's an older video, I don't know if you still check those comments. Thanks for all of your help!
Hey Nice VID, i have the same BM card and today with OBS 25.0.4 i cant connect a camera to it. If you have any advise would be nice to know, cheers and thanks !
I used a similar DeckLink 4K capture card for a livestreaming project at university and it really sucked. the hardware might be great and specs sound really good, but man the software compatibility and the driver issues were really bad.
Are you using this card still? I am looking for a card that can capture 4K (UHD), but also 2560x1440 as I don't want to record footage on the PC I'm playing with. 30 FPS is fine. Do you know if this card accepts the 2560x1440 resolution?
Yeah I would not go lower than 30 fps for even b roll, the rendered videos are going to be 30fps which im fine with for reviews, but 30fps for the entire review with a 24fps b roll, its gonna look weird and not look smooth. Maybe if the entire video was in 24fps maybe but I can't stand 24fps on youtube.
Jacob Frashure Well Our don't see in FPS, and to successfully make 24fps fluid, you have to use different techniques like in the movies, there is a reason why fast movement looks smooth at 24fps on your TV, I sure as hell can see 24 fps though, anywhere after 40fps looks smooth to me, others are different, not everyone is the same.
so what are you gonna do about 4k video game capture in the mean time (while they update their shit)? Have you ever used Atomos anything before? I've always gone by the moniker "buy the best because it lasts (quality and tech upgrade wise) and usually does what you want it to without much BS" and that has kept me from spending more in the long run.
So how about a comparison of popular capture devices versus capture software? There's still a lot of aspiring UA-camrs out there. Just tossing an idea your way...
i think for 4k capture using lossless format 3Gb/s is perfectly normal. and it's not like you're gonna greenscreen heavily for vfx/ color grade intensively, 8 bit is just fine. in fact if it offers efficiently high compression like h265, you'd be just fine with it
Paul, when I use VLC to play back some 4K content on my PC it would play and if it did play it was insanely choppy. Try using Windows Media Player to play the files back. At least on my PC WMP would play my 4K files.
maybe the gtx 1080 is outputting with HDCP ? in that case you NEED the hdmi IN/OUT so the card/gtx can sense the HDCP from the monitor and allow the signal to go thro . had the same issue with my canon 650D it WOULD NOT allow me to capture anything with the elgato HD60 UNLESS i had it connected to my monitor (i switched the signal in on the monitor to DVI to use it and the capture still works )
I find myself legitimately happy when I see a Paul upload, because it feels like I can hang out with "virtual PC dad" again!
Love the content, love the doggos, love the personality. Here's to you!
Tyvm Tye! Hope I was able to improve your day a little 😁
"virtual PC dad" creepy AF though...
Psh whatever, he's already a double doggo dad
Very nice, thank you. Looking forward to seeing how you're finding it. What CPU power it requires and what storage.
PhilsComputerLab it is nice to see you here :)
Tuna Yücer Ha :D
PhilsComputerLab yeee
So the Razer Ripsaw can record the Panasonic GH4 (and the G7/G85 for that matter)?
Congratulations! You have succeeded
I will say, Paul, the video that the camera picked up THROUGH OBS with your compression WAS DROPPING FRAMES OFTEN, making the video hard to watch personally.

+Paul's Hardware I have a feeling you are getting ready to review that 2TB samsung 960 pro ;)
mage7206 yes that 960 pro might be easier than a raid.
Maybe set up a ram drive for recording 10 bit?
i have no idea what any of this stuff is nor care about it, but i watched the vid anyways because pauls' videos are baller
"Why this is huge?" -Paul 2016

pretty pumped a new video came out. i was literally like "I NEED MOAR CONTENT!!!"
Does it seem like when he tried the card out with the camera, the 24FPS seemed a bit stuttery?
It needs a heatsink and fan. Just waiting for Jayz2 to watercool it now.
Nah, he wont use it because it is not form EVGA, Corsair, Fractal or Nvidia. Because those guys make best capture cards.
Sucks to hear about the woes, I have the BMIP4k and it has been a savior for 1440p capturing and streaming.
Hi Paul, 13:56 could you link me to the build video of your box behind you? Thanks!
anyone else notice the video get choppy when it switched to the capture card recording at around 7:00 ? i think it's because of it recording at 24fps but the video is rendered at 30fps

Did you find out if true?
Combo edge on that spyderco, Ugh man I hate combo edges. Do you sharpen on waterstones?
Learned about MediaInfo and installed. Handy tool. Thanks for that. I don't have need for 4k capture, but it was a good review for me to see your trial and error. Thanks for sharing!
Hey thank you for the video.
I have mini 4k too, but i can't get it to work with OBS any ideas? thanks
Thumbs up, not for the unboxing but for that Spyderco knife.
that's my version of putting a cat in the vid lol
@Paul What wallpaper is that? Where can I find it?
almost all of my wallpapers are from interfacelift.com
Paul's Hardware Thank you.
Did you tried 29fps instead of 30fps from 4k monitor? I wanna record a 4k30 monitor for Mixed Reality and barely found useful reviews on Blackmagic 4k capture card.
Have you done an update on this? Have the vendors updated software yet? Inquiring minds want to know!
and what about hdmi cable length? my fuji xt3 manual says that not more than 1.5m is possible - which is really short
Hello! Maybe today u find some solution to record 10-12 bit 4:4:4 or 4:2:2? I use declink quad hdmi but seems it can do high bit depth on single port while for few there is HDYC 10 bit (mean 4:2:2) 😢

how are you going to write 3Gb a sec to any drive since even the new samsung M.2 960 has "only" 2.1Gb/sec write speed?
Harm Zegt it will be cached inside RAM i guess.
Harm Zegt he corrected it to 3gigabit which is equivalent to roughly 400 megabyte per second. The 960 has 2.1gigabyte per second transfer speed.
Harm Zegt He corrected himself that the files are 3GBit/s which means about 300 Megabytes per Second to write - don't confuse Bits and Bytes
ahhhh okay ;-)
dat zei ik ;-)
What is the best way to stream 3 cameras to the internet live? Should I get a Blackmagic Design Decklink SDI 4K Capture & Playback Card with three inputs? Is that all I need?
Spyderco make a appearance in this video!! Nice job Paul!!
can you use decklink to cast ipad screen to OBS Studio?

However, thats the reason SDI is so popular in broadcast situations. It just works and has no hdcp crap embedded
Which component is recording and encoding the video?
Capturecard? Cpu? Gpu?
is that in the WIFI ? record straight with the htmi cable ?move the capture card to that other computer
I need to stream video at 4k 8bit and 1080p60 with a Panasonic g85 is this a good buy?
Just a thought, but does it have anything to do with the Decklink Mini Recorder not being compatible with HDCP?
hello!! nice video! do you think is it possible to capture file form camera straight to da vince resolve? thanks!!
If I were into that as much as you, I'd try to find out what Kit Guru uses. Oh, and Dmitri of Hardware Canucks, but especially Kit Guru. His video is exceptional.
Whats that internal port on the upper edge of the PCB and what is it for? I looked at the specs of the card on Blackmagic's site and there's no mention or label on the diagram.
applemaggot looks like a micro USB port
for firmware updates maybe?
where did you find that wallpaper? i like it D: 7:40
Give Magewell a try @Paul, their cards are awesome, a bit more expensive, but work like a charm, woth every $.
Please tell me if I connect a decklink mini recorder 4k & intensity pro at a time both is work or not...??
BNC connector...that is an ancient connector I use for HAM radio and old ring networks. Funny how it works so well for high bit rate video
flahr1 Yeah, i still got an BNC Cable lying around, first used for 10Base 2 Ethernet (with those Terminator Plugs at the end) and then as an Antenna Cable for a Radio Scanner.
The connector is BNC and doesn't really have anything to do with the speed, the cable is what does the high video rate.
flahr1 Why do you have a ham radio? Are you a survivalist? :)
What's funnier is how SDI 12g just came out, and it runs at 12Gbps.
OffTheBeatenPath i work at a tv station, we work mostly with sdi, those are sturdy connectors
ddi you try setting the monitors to duplicate? then taking a short hdmi running it from the 1080 to the cature card directly?
yes, that didn't work
I can see the dilema with the software then. Seems likensomething they should have acccounted for
amazing video. Love the information contained in this.
Thank you, Sir.
you tried desktop capture for the video cap?
can you use hdmi and sdi together?
I have a question, Why not use one ultra system like your very own arctic panther to do everything, I mean what's the need for multiple systems ?
What monitors did u use here ?
Hello Sir,
I purchased one Decklink Mini Recorder and one Intensity Pro 4k. I installed both the cards in my pc but only one input is coming related to pro 4k and decklink mini recorder is not working. Please help
I have the usb 3 intensity shuttle and to get it to work in obs it takes a lot of tinkering around and refreshing the app
And to get it to work with a computer you need to set the computer screen to the exact refresh rate you have set in the desktop video capture software
I love the shirt!
I think if you want to capture and play at the same time you'd really want the 2nd video-output card that sells for another $190
Can I record 4K with my sony a7s with this device? And on what codec does it record?
is there an capture card out for ultrawide capturering?
If I don't care about 4k but just want to record my PS3 and maybe stream it on twitch, what is the best?
A portable like the Elgato shown in this video, or a PCI-E one?
Up to FHD a Ripsaw or Elgato (whichever is cheaper where you live) is a good choice. They're pretty much made for game streams.
I'm in my final year of A-levels and was wondering as I'm taking Media at university, what camcorder/DSLR would be the best for a student?
can anyone help a brother out

What happened to the external Razer capture card? Was it a good product?
yup, still works and I use it, but it can't do 4K
Oh nice. Thanks for actually responding :)
Just found your review of it lol.
Would you say it's the best bang-for-buck 1080p 60fps capture card? I need something to capture an Xbox One S output and a camera's hdmi output.
+NinetyFour it's worked great for me, there's an Avermedia version that's very similar too. I haven't tried the elgato HD 60 yet though but I've heard good things
Hi friend, did you ever manage by any chance to update the firmware on the intensity pro 4K and test it with OBS? Thank you :)
I always appreciate it when you, Kyle, Jay, or Barnacules, or other youtubers, show their different set-ups. I feel it's always great information for everyone to know how everyone do their recordings, and it even helps me figure out ways that I, or others, can do recording.
Thanks Paul !!!!!
Paul midnight uploads?
Picture much sharper than usual
First 4k video?
Can it run in SLI?
Hi! Is latency zero???
can u plz tell me what's the pc requirement for this means processor ram graphics card plz Tell in detail
Do you have any capture cards you can recommend that can do 1080p 60fps with a duplicated display type setup? looking at elgato but i hear it has bad problems with OBS
I've enjoyed using the Razer Ripsaw for this, solid external USB 3 capture card and also has analog inputs
Where is The deck link Software?
Noob here. But is there any advantage to doing this other than skipping the step of transferring the file from camera to pc?
MoarPower no, these cards are for people with poor understanding of tech.
Some cameras support settings (either resolution, color, or framerate related) that can't work with internal storage because SD cards are generally too slow. The direct link to PC is also convenient because editorial staff don't have to go back and forth between the camera and the PC when they need to change some settings or check if the video is correct.
Thanks Mr Kagouris! Your answer would have been my answer :-D
Capture cards are best used for live broadcast signals. Depending on the camera, recording to a PC/capture card allows for uncompressed capture right from the camera's sensor. Writing to a memory card in the camera most often requires compression reducing image quality and color information.
Thanks guys! :)
7:00 That shirt is awesome.
The setup is recording in horribly low fps. Its almost hurting my eyes.
Villee.. B-b-but the human eye can't see past 24fps!
ITS 30FPS LIKE WHAT MY PS4 CAN OUTPUT
Villee.. PS4 IS BETTER THAN PC BECAUSE YOU CAN WATCH THE NETFLIX
TRUE BUT WITH THE XBOX ONE S YOU CAN HAVE IT CONVERTED TO 4K UNLIKE ON PC OR PS4
true 4k > fps.

Some say when you're this early, the elusive and mysterious Paul might reply. Hi Paul!
never seen paul so mad before
Zug Zwang check out Kyle's channel bitwit, he made a video impersonating Paul, that's so close :p
These kind of problems can bring that out in even the calmest among us.
Hey Nice VID, i have the same BM card and today with OBS 25.0.4 i cant connect a camera to it.
If you have any advise would be nice to know, cheers and thanks !
Try to update to Blackmagic Desktop Video 11.5. You can find the download link on blackmagic .com/support
@@Soggi20 Hey thanks for the reply, I update it , but still no signal to the OBS, any idea? thank you
labop21 maybe try a different pci-e slot?
@@Soggi20 i can see the Signal in the BM Media express software, only not able to see it over OBS also in ADOBE premiere i can make a video from it...
labop21 did you make sure to use Blackmagic device instead of video input?
whats the highest bitrate you can get from raw 4k footage?
Does it do 1080p 60 fps?
If Blackmagic works, it must be magic!
Can I connect SDI and HDMI cables at the same time and use both?
No.
It may be in 4K, but is 24 fps really worth it?
it is when the video is rendered at 30fps and the video source is 24fps, makes it look pretty bad
Because our eyes see at 24 FPS. ..
Also, movies are recorded at 24 FPS if i'm not mistaken.
You stop that.
so what are you gonna do about 4k video game capture in the mean time (while they update their shit)? Have you ever used Atomos anything before? I've always gone by the moniker "buy the best because it lasts (quality and tech upgrade wise) and usually does what you want it to without much BS" and that has kept me from spending more in the long run.
So how about a comparison of popular capture devices versus capture software? There's still a lot of aspiring UA-camrs out there. Just tossing an idea your way...
@2:14 21 peas! :P Love ya Paul! lol
i think for 4k capture using lossless format 3Gb/s is perfectly normal. and it's not like you're gonna greenscreen heavily for vfx/ color grade intensively, 8 bit is just fine. in fact if it offers efficiently high compression like h265, you'd be just fine with it
what are the capture-pc specs???
you can make a review about black magic extreme capture card for 4k the price is 3000 dollar and HDMI 2.0 and thunderbolt 3
maybe if I can talk them into sending me one, this one I bought personally
Paul's Hardware I'm poor but you can make video in 8k with new red rocket camera
I live on Brazil people poor
Paul, when I use VLC to play back some 4K content on my PC it would play and if it did play it was insanely choppy. Try using Windows Media Player to play the files back. At least on my PC WMP would play my 4K files.
"Log and capture" is greyed out and cant select in media express, and there is zero documentation on this, please help anyone
Two devices in one computer will work?
Yes.
Cool wallpaper
10:18 my VLC does the same thing
really annoying
maybe the gtx 1080 is outputting with HDCP ? in that case you NEED the hdmi IN/OUT so the card/gtx can sense the HDCP from the monitor and allow the signal to go thro . had the same issue with my canon 650D it WOULD NOT allow me to capture anything with the elgato HD60 UNLESS i had it connected to my monitor (i switched the signal in on the monitor to DVI to use it and the capture still works )
Oh the joys of being an early adopter!
