Very Helpful video I pulled mine over the weekend took just over 2 hours, the floor jack trick was the way to go for getting it out of the frame. I don't remember if it was in the video or not but to anyone getting ready to tackle this, there are 3 wires that run from the bottom of the motor, up the center frame and connect to the bike harness near where the rear of the fuel tank would be, make sure and disconnect these, fish them down and zip tie so they are out of the way while you pull motor. Thanks again for the video!
Great video! I am going to remove an 1100 engine from my 99 Vstar to rebuild and get back to riding, while I am sure it might be a little different your video will be very helpful. Thanks!
How did that go? Any advise? I want to remove my 1100 vstar engine to clean and paint it. I've wanted to do it for years but have been a bit nervous about it. (Have done cams, starter clutch, fourth set of pipes, carbs out 20 times)
Thanks for sharing. Was hoping to see an example of pulling the starter motor out. If you pull the starter motor out, do you need to drain the oil first?
Im rather scared of removing my rear wheel, afraid it will never get to ride again, it looked so simple here.. is there any guides around for removing the rear wheel?
hey how much would it cost to have someone paint a v star in general my grampa is gonna pass his down to me within 3 years or so and i plan on keeping it until i die or pass it on to my son if i have one
It depends on what you want to do paint wise... I plane paint job 1 solid color I can normally do for 700 with no body work If you want multiple colors, flames, skulls etc I normally charge $2000 Samples here www.tico-designs.com Hope that helps
Gavin Planas did you took the engine out??? Am working on mine and as of right now am not sure if i should or not. I have everything else out. Carburetor-tanks-seat-
I am trying to size this job up, I think I can Remove the Engine, But The Wiring Harness Scares The Hell Out Of me, In fact I'm Replacing It As Well Because I have a Short or Bad Wire In the Turn Signals and It's Pissing Me Off, How Many Connectors Will I have To Face From The Harness Will I have To Face? Oh and I think I will Remove The Swing Arm.
All is doable and not to complicated. What you have to do is use painters tape to Mark what connector is what in both sides of the connection...if you don’t know what is the connection for, just use numbers (create your own code) Swing arm is a simple one bolt deal Good luck !
maustarman,, The time has come. I noticed when you removed the engine, I didn't see any wiring harness on the frame, talk to me! When I get all the harness disconnected from the engine, it can be removed (wiring harness)?
Obviously.. lol. But if it's just a minor oil leak, the engine will still run. Just a tip for anyone out there trying to D.Y.I. When using a torch to heat bolts, use a small flame and concentrate it on the nut.
When I need just a bit of heat I use those refillable butane pencil torches. They don't last long some times so I have 3 of them in the toolbox just in case. They're not really very hot but the flame is smaller than a regular torch snf less apt to burn something you don't want burnt. LOL
Hey! thanks for the video, amazing stuff... I've got a question for you, on my Dragstar (V-Star) 650 there's a little leak which seems to come from the top of the second cylinder (the back one). Could it be the valves or cylinder head? Is this something that I can check without removing the engine? It's a very small leak to be honest, but it drops into the exhaust and it smells a bit sometimes. Thanks again!
Hey Ramiro Where you are describing the leak it can be one of 2 things...or maybe 3 :) 1- the exhaust valve cover o-ring 2-the Cam cover o-ring 3- the crankcase breather hose might have disconnected from its plug and it leaks a bid from under the chrome head cover. All of them easy to fix and no need to remove the engine
Fantastic information and much appreciated. I'll see if I can get the service manual from the web and check on those steps... I'm obviously not a mechanic, but I do get myself around as a weekend warriror :) Thank you!
PS: I will have to remove the carbs in order to remove the valve covers and check those suggestions, correct? (haven't looked at the bike yet, I'm at work)
+Ramiro Tarrico Villafañe These bikes are pretty simple to work on...and working on your own bike gives you a sense of pride it makes you feel good :) No need to remove the carbs for any of the procedures posted... The valve cover you will be checking is the *exhaust not the intake and that one immediately on top of the header pipe
Absolutely, I have always worked on my cars. This is my first bike, the principles are kind of the same, just getting used to the smaller spaces and clearances. That's why I was wondering if I needed to remove the carbs or not. As I said, I need to go home and check the bike. I will follow the recommendations.. thanks!

How similar is the process with a Vstar 1300?
Great video! I’ll be doing this job on my Vstar very soon. Thank you very much again
I would have taken the internals out first to make it lighter, and not scratch the frame, but you did it with no special tools! Cool
Great video, very helpful. I also have just bought one of these with a bad engine. Im about to pull it out. Thanks!
I liked that video I learned a lot . I will be taking my motor out soon
Can you install a Yamaha v Star 650 without removing swingarm
Absolutely! As shown in the video no need to remove the swing arm
Im rather scared of removing my rear wheel, afraid it will never get to ride again, it looked so simple here.. is there any guides around for removing the rear wheel?
look simple ,strip is easy ,putting back is hard
Remove the Rear Fender , Much Easier To Put It Back On

I have an 1100. Is there any difference on taking out the engine?
Gavin Planas
Pretty much the same thing..
The 1100 has a piece of the frame down/right that comes off for a easier engine removal

maustarman, thanks I will get it done, I'm just looking for an edge, I have to get a impact, the mounting bolts are tight as hell!

Can you put a 1100 on tht frame
I'm in Australia where can I buy a 650 v star cruiser engine from
Ive bought all my Vstar engines on eBay
Thank you 🙏. Great video
Thanks of us how to remove the shaft drive. No videos anywhere bout. Skipped the whole part
Thank you, awesome video, it will help me a lot.
If your exhaust has rusty nuts, warm the bike up, they should break loose after.
That won't work in a blown engine such as this one.

Use a heatgun...it's safer than a torch.
I am going to do mine, but I don't think I will wear sandels.
