    After many failed winters in North Pocono Pennsylvania I finally insulated my hives with no ventilation during the winter only. I followed Dr. Tom Seeley's advice and heavily insulated the top of my hive but also insulated the sides. Just not as heavy as the top. I also built a quilt box for the top with a plexi glass floor so I could see the bees/fondant throughout the winter without opening the hive. The bees never balled up and it was my first hive to make it through winter. They are still thriving today. I also had a rescue from a fallen tree in the middle of January and I also put them in an insulated hive and they too are still thriving today. My experience thus far in my climate is Insulate the hive with no ventilation and make sure they have fondant of some sort of food available to them. With an insulated hive I believe they eat less since they don't expend energy trying to stay warm. Just my experience so far and thought I'd share. I enjoy your videos and learn alot. thank You!

    Hello David
    I'm a second-year beekeeper in SW Michigan. Could you clarify my understanding of mite control. I understand if a hive has less than 2 mites per 100 you do not treat. So, when I tested my 4 hives, 1 hive had 0 mites per 300 bees 2 hives had 2 mites per 300 bees and 1 with 5 mites per 300 bees. All under 2 mites per hundred so when I ask other beekeepers, they all say treat. CONFUSING!!!

      @beek  17 годин тому

      Your highest mite count was still under 2%, so you are okay, but the other beekeepers just may think 2% warrants treatment. 🤷‍♂️ It would help!

    David - I have 5 hives with 2 deeps. Three of the hives have nothing in the bottom deep. All hives have queens, and lots of bees. Upper box has maybe two frames of brood and 2-3 frames of honey. What do I need to do? I have top liquid feeders on all hives, as well as sugar bricks in all hives. Second year beek from eastern Ky. And I did not harvest any honey.

      I'm dealing with about the same scenario. I believe I need to invest in pollen substitute. I see plenty of bee bread but not dry...

    Hi David, Thank you for all of your videos. I have been keeping bees for 10 years and so do not find much of what you say to be new to me. But I still watch your videos. Why, you might ask? Because you reinforce what I already know. It's like taking an exam and doing well on it.
