    Painting the card really made me want to play again :-D Anyone interested in seeing some more card alter videos? Anything more helpful to show? Any specific cards would be great to see?

      I would love to see it more. I passed for something similar.. used to play magic but life changed (adopted an old dog that required a lot of attention, so I shofted into rt). Now that my buddy has passed away I started playign magic again and I am holding myself to not paint over all my expensive modern decks :P

    for the record, as a canvas painter, I feel like miniature painting probably prepares you for card altering more than canvas painting does! unless, like... you paint on a really tiny canvas and your card alter is doing a whole new original piece of art

    • @WatchItPaintIt
      @WatchItPaintIt  2 роки тому +1

      Haha. This is a really good point! I just feel canvas painters are used to using their imagination and filling in blanks! Painting miniatures can sometimes be more like painting by numbers :-D

    • @raphaelmorgan2307
      @raphaelmorgan2307 2 роки тому

      @@WatchItPaintIt that's fair. I think both prepare one for different aspects of card altering. I find it much easier to paint on a canvas than a card even though I'm using my imagination, because I can kinda do whatever I want, and if a color isn't *exactly* how I planned or something isn't *exactly* where I planned it to be, pretty much no one can tell! whereas on a card, it's pretty obvious if I messed up something like a border extension 😅
      Paint also sticks to canvases way better but I have no idea what that's like on a mini

    ive only altered a few cards now, but one tip that drastically helped on the ones I wanted to fully cover the card was light sandpaper/ink eraser, a base coat of pigment-based ink (for this to really work you want to let it cure a long time, overnight possibly), and a basecoat of airbrush-grade miniature primer, I use whatever brush I have that's clean but anything watercolor/acrylic grade is best.

    Coming from the same boat of painting miniatures but not painting canvas, you've made it look like something I can attempt.
    And I feel you on the white borders.
    I get it at the beginning when we first started getting core sets with black borders, the people didn't want white bordered cards anymore. But they haven't made white bordered cards since, so I get nostalgic for them from time to time.
    It sucks, when I'm looking up prices, as soon as something hits revised or 4th edition the price drops from thousands or hundreds down to maybe a quarter of a dollar.

    question for ya: i’m an artist, and a friend of mine is very into MTG. for his birthday, he asked me to do a few alter cards for him, but i’m personally not into MTG and knew nothing about them until he told me. obviously i wanted to look up some examples to see how others do it and first of all, this is incredibly impressive!!! you’re very talented and i admire your work! anyways, i’ve done many paintings in the past, but never on a card. do you recommend sealing the finished cards with anything specific or just leaving the acrylic as is? thank you so much!

    • @WatchItPaintIt
      @WatchItPaintIt  3 роки тому

      I personally sleeve all my cards when I play, so I have found that to be enough. I don’t know what professional alterers would do, might be worth asking one? If you friend is very into MtG I would bet money he sleeves his cards too so would likely not matter either, once it’s in a sleeve it’s well protected and won’t get touched!
      FYI, I don’t recall if I mentioned in the video but I am not an artist. Until 3 years ago I’d never even held a paint brush :-D so I suspect you will make some very impressive work! Would love to see what you produce, tag me in on social media if you get some done!

    The reason you can still see the edges, but have them disappear in the sleeve must surely be because of different finish - gloss/matt/satin etc. So if you use some sort of varnish over the whole card, you could probably get it more in line as well, no?
