Lack of practice with procrastination. But I was thinking how to add more drawing time in my schedule when you make this video. Thanks!

I bind my own watercolour sketchbooks, and I procrastinate when I can draw so I don’t have to bind a new one too soon (it’s quite a bit of work 😅). Also, I while away quite some time on social media: something I’ve been trying to cut back on.

As long as you eventually do something of your own creative, I feel watching youtube artists is very helpful and entertaining. Before this tech era, I would buy art books and not really look at them much after one sitting, but now with youtube I find endless variety and learn something new everyday even at 4 am if I can't sleep

I love Tiffany's additions to your sketchbooks! My son does the same! One time my 8yo son and his friend were in the back seat of my car with my neocolors, scribbling all over the pages of my sketchbook. I titled those pages, "Two Boys in the Back Seat, No. 1" etc. He has also painted in some of my line drawings. I don't mind at all, because a sketchbook is about the process rather than the end result, and now it has extra memories in it.

I got lots of ideas from this video. I like the idea of assigning a theme to a sketchbook and filling with pretty mundane things, like the baby products. I think sometimes I lose motivation to draw because I feel I need to draw something special and complicated. The drawings of your children’s toys are so simple, but made a great spread of drawings. This inspired to try draw everyday things, like the jar of pesto I had for dinner, it tasted really good!

I keep a thinner sketchbook so I can fill it up faster. I get great joy when I get done with a sketchbook and am then able to pick up a new one (usually a different size to experiment with, compared to previous sketchbook). I also like keeping a pocket sketchbook to sketch while commuting via public transport :)

Working on a day job, having a family, a UA-cam channel and still being able do keep a drawing practice makes you a very successful man! 😊 It always comes to what we prioritize in our lives, sometimes things get more complicated and we can’t draw for weeks, but we need to remember how good it feels - even when our drawings don’t end up as satisfying as we hoped for. I’m just talking to myself here! 😄 thank you for another great video!!

My problem I work by "waves". Sometimes I can't stop drawing and I do two or more sketches a day. That's usually when I do my best work and also when I learn the more.. But sometimes family problems take my down and I don't feel like sketching... Even if I try I used to make silly mistakes and I don't have the will to continue. Thank you for your videos Teoh.

I always bring my iPad to work for my breaks.
Some days I can get in 50 minutes of work, when I would've otherwise not wanted to before or after work.
I have a very exhausting job.
Feels like the only way to complete anything nowadays, as my style requires a lot of time, especially since I'm always learning whenever I start a new picture.
At one point I did have a pocket notepad and a pen to sketch off my phone.
When I get a good day in, it makes me feel a lot better about coming to work.
Doesn't feel like I'm just living for the weekends, but when I do get to them, they're set up so that I can spend 10 hours drawing.

    Very helpful tip!
Another one which helped me a lot - I struggle with new and nice (or even expensive) sketch books. I feel like I could ruin them with my sketches. I just want to draw something perfect into them. But those thougths prevented me from using the sketch books (yes, plural!). So I began to "ruin" them, losing my respect for them - I draw/sketch something into it which is not perfect. Or I even demolish one page with some ink splatter, crumble the page or whatever. It helps because whatever I do now - it is better than this. :D

Love the children’s art! Great idea. I find doodles and scribbles in old journals and remember when my kids were young. I wish I started drawing then, and documenting like you’re doing. Wonderful memories. Having sketchbooks to test ideas and materials is also a wonderful tip. I will use that one. I have been using more mixed media paper lately. It seems robust. The sizing is different than in watercolour paper and it handles wet media differently. That’s been fun. Thank you for the tips about being productive too, especially resting. Must remember this! Thanks again.

  • @cammiluna
    @cammiluna 2 роки тому +3

Wait, when did you have a second child???
These are really great tips! I keep a small messenger bag with a mixed media book, water brush and small watercolor palette around the house which i always keep near me and no matter where i am in the house, i have access to them when i can make a quick drawing. I find watercolor to be a faster medium to work with than the markers I used to work with, and drawing digitally when i work from home with a computer just adds to my eye strain.
With that, rest is always really good! I think one really important piece of advice i can add to all this is moreso for digital artists is to take breaks from digital art once in a whlie and switch to traditional for a bit if your eyes are tired from how many hours were spent on the screen. It's a good opportunity to practice and discover other drawing supplies and mediums, and when your eyes are rested, you can return to your digital projects.

In line with keeping a list of things to do, I also keep lots of reference photos and inspiring artwork to pull from on Pinterest. Only reason why I don't draw that often is fear of failure. I have ideas I really want to bring to life, but I get so impatient whenever nothing's happening fast. Like getting better at poses, anatomy groups, animals, objects, and backgrounds. And I really want to make a living of what I would do.
Another thing that stops me is when I don't plan well for these things, and I need to improve so badly. So thanks for the tips.

I even bought a Samsung Tab S6 Lite with my first paycheck when I just started my full-time job merely because I wanted to draw more in-between downtimes and don't have to worry about waiting to get home to finish my sketches digitally (I used to do the latter in my college years as I could only doodle with my notebook lol)

Thank you so much for your helpful videos! I’m trying to make sketching a habit so I am trying sketch every day now. (Starting today, lol). Today I made a sketch in pencil and went over it in ink and when I tried to erase the pencil lines the ink smeared. Can you recommend an ink that won’t smear, and that also will handle watercolors? I have a couple of ink pins that I enjoy drawing with, and the refillable bag the piston method.Thank you in advance! Jean Mayo

I just hit post before I edited the last post, the last sentence should be refillable by the piston method, not sure I got that right. Thank you for understanding. And now I can’t find my previous post. 🙈My question was, after drawing in pencil and go on going over it in ink, it smeared terribly when I tried erase the pencil lines. I have several ink pans are refillable by the piston method, can you recommend an ink that will not smear and will handle the watercolors? Thank you in advance! Jean Mayo

Thanks for this Teoh!! Such great advice!!! I'd love to know what sketchbooks those were that you featured and what brush that was in the end. I love how you include your children in the process and into your art world!

Hi Theo, thanks for the helpful tips!
I'd like to ask a question, hope you don't mind though it is not directly related to this topic, but still about drawing.
Lately I have been rewatching your fountain pens videos playlist.
I was wondering, do you know if one can use waterproof ink with a dip pen, without risking to get the ink to dry (and permanently), having to leave the bottle open for quite a longer time?
I have a similar problem when using masking fluid in watercolor painting, actually. I always find it forming a dry, gummy coat on the surface in a few minutes.
    Thank you in advance!

You can use waterproof ink with dip pens. If you leave ink bottles open for too long, they will indeed dry out, but you should be able to add water back to the bottle if the ink becomes too thick.
