    I hope these tips help! and if you're short on time, here's the summary:
    1. *Find Time Sucks* in your Day and reduce them: this can be social media usage, internet scrolling, watching fnaf lore videos, anything that maybe taking up more time than necessary! It's still good to have periods of rest and allow yourself to scroll and catch up with your fav creators, but just be mindful about your media consumption.
    2. *Prioritize Sleep* This is so crucial to your mental and physical health. Skimping out on sleep can cause you to feel sluggish and unproductive, causing us to take longer to do tasks and eat up our free time for art and recreation. And it also causes us to make poor choices and not be as focused when we are drawing. Sleep is key to a healthy creative!
    3. *Time Management Skills and Using a Planner* This is the best way to keep track of your tasks and schedule out your time so that you can still get important life stuff done and feed your artistic spirit.
    4. *Find the right time to draw* over finding more time to draw: Find the times in the day when you're feeling the most creative and capitalize on those moments when you can! Hitting that creative time of day can lead to better art in a shorter period of time rather than scheduling a 3 hour time block when you're feeling less motivated or creative. Quality over quantity 💖
    5. *Mini Art Sessions* Take advantage of the 5-10 minutes in between shifts, classes, or tasks to doodle a lil bit! This can keep your creative fire going and help you to remember ideas you're really excited about when you have more time to draw! These little sessions add up and can be a great a natural way to reaching your art goals.
    6. *Building a Habit* A habit will make everything I recommended so much easier to stick to because you just instinctually do it and not even have to think about it. An art habit is powerful.
    7. *Why do you want to draw more?* Make sure you are wanting to draw more for yourself, not because of any pressure or standard from other artists you see online. For this to be a sustainable part of your daily routine and to invest so much time into art, you have to enjoy it yourself (seems obvious but sometimes we get caught up in other peoples approval).
    8. *Your value is not linked to your Productivity* It's okay if you don't make art regularly, or miss a session that you scheduled, and life just gets in the way. The amount of art you produce and the frequency in which you produce is not a measure of your value of as an artist or a person.
    Happy Drawing!💖

      Real talk though, it’s insanely difficult for me to find the time/energy/focus for my art, and seeing people share the same struggle is extremely validating! Having a full time job unrelated to art, mental and physical health issues to work with (guess who was SEVERELY vitamin D deficient for months without realizing 😭), a relationship to maintain, etc… it’s HARD and capitalism is the biggest bitch to get through. Again, it warms my heart to see an artist spreading the RIGHT message! So many just spout of what they do (there is nothing wrong with this as they are usually just answering what they were asked, which was literally just that, what THEY do). You take the time to explain what you do, but also point out that it's only what YOU do, that it will not work for everyone. I also could hug you for pointing out mental health in this. I have my own struggles there and know EXACTLY how hard it can be to draw even when you desperately want to when dealing with that. I haven't finished a drawing in months as I speak due to said struggles. Lastly, it was wonderful to hear you say "Do not use me as a standard". That was the more beautiful piece of advice I've heard in a long time.

    • @sketchesofshay
      @sketchesofshay  8 місяців тому +11

      so happy that my videos come off as friendly advice rather than prescriptive. we are all different and create in our own ways, there is no one size fits all for creative habits and processes. I am wishing you the best with your mental health, you are strong and will get through this tough creative patch.

    A planner never really worked that well for me, but what did help was having a journal where after each day I write down what I have done art wise. Being able to look back and see that I actually got stuff done and taking the time to record that made me more confident in my skill.

    This is really helpful! Personally I don't have any art friends (most of my friends couldn't care less) but what I do is I find sketch with me videos, chatty or quiet, and I sketch along with them. I think they call it body doubling, but it's just nice to do and looking at their sketches sparks inspiration during the session for me. I've been branching out and doing different things because of it 😊 one day I'll have in real life art friends

    great advice! can personally testify that it works :D i deleted tiktok and put a timer on insta couple of years ago because it truly felt like my brain was rotting lol. it helped a lot with mental clarity overall.
    about drawing everyday. it's definitely not for everyone. i personally stopped drawing everyday some time ago, but most importantly, i stopped expecting myself to draw everyday and stopped feeling guilty about being "unproductive" or about the speed of my improvement :)
    also wanted to add that keeping a sketchbbok only for yourself, the one you'll never show anyone can be extremely beneficial in many ways

Omg and I’m so glad that you said even 1 doodle for the entire day counts because I just started doing that recently! I'm gonna keep a lot of these tips in mind, especially with making small sketches, a lot of time I feel like I haven't drawn at all because I haven't made a huge drawing. But really I made a few tiny sketches so that should count too!
    I was worried when I clicked on this video it would just say basic advice everyone gives like, spend less time on social media (even though I never use social media other then a few youtube videos here and there or opening twitter for a second just to post a drawing and never using it again lol), or get more sleep (which is easier said then done) but this video is actually really helpful!

    i agree, delete tiktok. aware of how much of a grumpy boomer i sound like but i just can't see the value in barely digesting 30-60 second videos with no end an sight. it's a perpetual time suck and the point you made about how people don't even remember half the stuff they watch is one of, if not the most important aspects to it, i think.
    why woud you spend time mindlessly consuming things you won't even recall, a day later? it's stuffing your brain with literal junk. the alternative doesn't even have to be 24/7 'productivity'; allowing yourself to be bored and empty headed is okay and a good thing. replacing the endless scrolling by literally just sitting there and doing nothing is a net positive.
    sorry for the tangent, this was a great video, as always. 4:57 might be my favorite piece of yours, it's so beautiful

    with the sleep thing... it would be better to figure out the time you are the most creative and what is your sleep cycle like. I have been told my entire life to go to bed early and wake up early and that I will have so much more time for stuff. No. It only makes me creatively fatigued. My best creation time is from 10pm to 1am when everyone else is silent and I can actually focus. If I go to bed early, I miss out on that and I cannot get myself to create anything in the morning, creating a vicious cycle of not being able to draw at all and that weighing down my mental state
    In short... do not let yourself be forced into a sleep cycle that does not work for you, it will not help you creatively. Sleep IS important, so learn how to do it properly for your own body

As long as your still getting enough sleep, you’re golden 💖

    Hi Shay!!! I would love to see videos on how u do digital art and how u get that painterly look. What brushes do u use to get that?
    Are there any brushes in procreate that u use that come with the app??

    • @sketchesofshay
      @sketchesofshay  8 місяців тому

      Hi! I’m actually doing a tutorial about my process for sometime in April! For procreate, I mainly just use the round brush, flat painter brush, and sometimes turpentine brush for that painterly look💖

      @@sketchesofshay Ok! I assumed u used the round brush. Also Congrats on 100k subscribers girl! You deserve it soooo much for your hard work!!! Your message on the start about toxic productivity couldn't be more true. I'm working a non-art job and finishing my master thesis, I'm soon getting married (lots of organization) and have a dog. All this takes up non-negotiable time and my free time is really limited. I can only draw so much in my week, makes sense that I don't have a sketchbook done every three months 🫠 and shorts did take up SO MUCH TIME and are really bad for the mental health. I stopped watching them all together.

      you're a busy bee! and it's okay to not be drawing and creating. live your life and enjoy the moments, you're in a really exciting time and those moments can be such great creative inspirations for when you can create! I don’t know if you’ll read this, but are there any updates about the discord server? I’m looking forward to it. Especially since i deleted instagram last year, it is nice to be able to engage with other artists directly.

    hii! how are you? i have a question, you have some advices to learn how to be good in digital drawing? i like how i draw in paper and i wish i could draw in digital like in paper but i find it very difficult, any advice will be really helpful :)

    • @sketchesofshay
      @sketchesofshay  8 місяців тому +1

      hi this is also something i struggle with! first it just takes time getting used to the digital surface rather than traditional paper so make sure to regularly schedule out low pressure digital sketching sessions. I would also suggest getting a screen protector that has a little texture! I know that there is the "paperlike screen protector" that a bunch of artists use. I hope this helped

    Oh, I finally see someone in public who says they do art as much as I do. I realize that a lot of people tend to be less productive, and that's fine, but sometimes when you get farther than others, you're left alone, and that's sad
    That's one of the reasons why I dropped out of university, I spent all my time drawing because I genuinely enjoyed it and because of that I was way ahead of my peers, which caused me more problems than benefits because I had no one to appreciate or at least be around at the same level to share experiences and stuff like that...
