before this video, i had no idea what persona 5 was about. after watching though, i can confidantly say that i still have no idea regardless this was an awesome video, i love the writing and editing style :) keep it up 🦔
The will seeds are named after the "sin" of each palace. Futaba's are the will seeds of wrath. Depths of mementos doesn't have will seeds, but it's a pretty obvious representation of sloth to me.
Kamoshida’s story arc didn’t make sense to me until I discovered that the age of consent in Japan was 13 freaking years old until just recently, when it was raised to 16.
Adding onto your thoughts on the morality of actually stopping Maruki, if you choose to accept his vision, it ends the game early yes, but it's not a "bad" ending. You simply decided what you thought was better, and you get a celebratory art piece because of it. On that note, the way that I interpreted Maruki's palace and the reason to stop him is that he's taking away what it means to be human. His vision is truly admirable, and life isn't fair. Ever. But dealing with the shit life throws at you and how those events shape you into who you are, those are the experiences that make you human. So even though life may be really shitty, learning to take life as it comes and using that to grow, is a better fate than living a perfect tale where nothing goes wrong, but nothing changes. To me, that's what the phantom thieves were fighting for in the end.
I definitely agree about Maruki and what it means to be human. I still stand by what I said about war and world hunger being meaningless suffering, but I also think that's outside of the scope of what the game was trying to say, which is fine. I can take the message for what it is. But more than anything, I just wish they hadn't been so gung-ho about taking Maruki down without discussing the consequences. But as I see it, they made the right decision.
some of these problems you have with it are mostly cultural differences- as all the palaces are based on real life criminals and stories. maruki is wrong and the phantom thieves are not- in fact the only mistake they really make is trusting akechi. maruki is another god of control imposing an untruth(which is like the fog of 4) hes not meaningfully different than the gods you fight not having total mallice. infact 2 of them even objectively love humans- but akechi really nails it- he made his choices and died for them- that meaning being erased is problem. there is no meaningless suffering we find meaning out of reality whether its convenient or not-which is where the thieves stand- they are willing to disarm dangerous people- but they arent willing to impose on reality. and control others- which is what marukis sin is. the game is telling you the true state of the universe is chaos- not order. it is wrong to impose authority rather than merit. authority is just power- garunteed and maintained by violence- like shido and such. and maruki even as he does infact fight you.
also just for some extra literacy the reason persona characters are wildly close to stereotypes is because the psychology of carl jung being based on the idea of architypes. common human characteristics from which identity may sprout. theres more deep baseball level shit about it but yeah anns character being a stereotype is kinda working with the concept, and its not like blonde who likes fashion and shopping isnt a real american person somewhere- stereotypes exist for a reason we notice patterns those patterns arent always meaningful- but as someone whose experienced being correctly labeled with some trans stereotypes to the point friends i dont even talk about games with will send me fall out new vegas tiktoks and i will click like cause of course i love that game. last good fallout ever of course i like that game. XD the bad part of stereotypes are when theyre wielded for mockery which im certain they arent implying with ann. after all shes a hero whose competent her opinions arent off handedly mocked soley for being a blonde or something- so while the framework of it could be sus it never truly crosses that line there- it does that with those odd gay npcs. (plus they seem to have done something about that cause a transphobic oke was replaced in persona 3 reload. they even made the joke funnier. so im not gonna hammer to hard on things- as far as i know the team at atlus are just super shutin nerds whose entire knowledge base is in the occult and history. so not to unlike myself XD though i recovered from the shut in part.
What problems would you say are due to cultural differences? I know about the palace rulers being based on actual criminals (I watched a video essay on it a couple weeks ago lol). But I don't see how that fixes my issues of kaneshiro's lack of a meaningful connection to the phantom thieves, or the effects of madarame's actions not being properly shown. Or even my issue of Yaldabaoth being uninteresting. I just don't find an all-powerful super-god who is evil for the sake of being evil very compelling. I do also know about Carl Jung from another video essay (I swear I do more than just watch UA-cam lol), but knowing that doesn't really fix my issues. I would also agree that Ann's stereotypical sort of character isn't necessarily harmful (certainly not in the way those couple of gay characters with Ryuji are). But I still think it makes her a less interesting character. For me at least, I realize that a lot of people love her, I just can't count myself in that group.
@@justflavio you know thats a fair rebuttle and considering i came off alittle as if you were a noob or something by accident-i can back off on the ann thing cause i kinda get it, even if its not to demean her its tiring to see constants. i think she learns herself in an interesting way idolizing villians from tv shows is also something i personally relate to- dude i was xena and rita repulsa on the playground fr - she loops back with empathy by understanding their perspective- which sounds wrong like shes missing the obvious- but shes just so frustrated when it gets to fighting- shed much rather find something useful out of conflict. the vile words of her peer for instance she could get toxic right back say its all rigged and leave- but she refuses to barter with that she loves what she loves and shell stand where she stands- so instead of blaming the industry or the girl like is obvious- she skips to using them as learning opportunities. still all of what i see would be a perspective bais and i wanted to atleast present this with out the feeling theres a wrong answer ultimately. as for the less impactful villains claim i think ill more adjust to a better angle since i kinda skipped a part of why i brung up its real life inspirations- every villian represents a type of authority- a teacher/coach, conmen and loansharks, bosses and corporation, law and government. it scales with the story of life- first your exposed to education going all the way up to grasping with the false gods weve constructed- this makes maruki the messiah complex- the phantom thieves actions arent about harm reduction- its about freedom. everyone of those bosses scales up to questions were gonna ask ourselves at steps in our life. you are to reject the paths of MANIPULATION which maruki and all the others are there to get- control. every strategy to get this one is meant to manipulate you in different ways- crushing fear, disabling mockery, literal extortion, only at the end- pretending to be interested in your well being- the false prophet. kinda obvious again but this is what it serves- the varying amount of personal investment is unintentional were all gonna disagree about which one is more relatable. because theyre all a trap real kids will navigate. so maybe you cant relate to someone having blackmailed you with pictures but im certain you know someone whose definitely been there. i personally match futabas story- just depression took my mom not government agents. i think you can tell by the wall of text i will absolutely not proof read. XD but before i kinda make that point and dip i just wanna say it wouldnt matter to me if every criticism we throw around about these games were true. its so fucking layered i think its the kinda art that just hangs a bit too much stuff in the air it takes a few passes to tell the difference sometimes in a problem or a metaphor. much or less understanding japan a hell alot more than i did before i played it XD ive seen like 5 multihour breakdowns and they never seem to say the same things even about some of the significant same things.
I hadn't thought of how the palace rulers match the types of authority figures you'll see throughout your life. That's interesting. And I do agree with your last point. Whatever criticisms I may have of this game, it's still a miracle of game design. From structure to writing to characters to everything else, persona 5 is something special.
@justflavio bro no you cant be reasonable! Dont you know our reputation! Were supposed to be snobs who are just Mishima but irl. XD but yeah games fucking dummy thicc i could muse about possible frames to study it under for hourrrss Xd
Great video man Now time to yap Speaking of the palaces i mostly agree with you, i think you didn’t say which palace was your favorite. Iwai: maxed out confidant and i really loved it because it was a little similar to sojiro. He used to work for yakuza and someone dropped a child infront of him but yakuza connections are coming back he hasn’t told his son that he is adopted and the end of the confidant is really wholesome. Also his shop’s music a banger. Mishima: READ THIS: i agree with you on mishima and i also maxed his confidant a whiny guy most of the time he ends up trying to make a documentary on phantom thieves in the future. I did the same ending as you: I liked the ending especially the last day 3/19 when you meet people whose confidant you have maxed out really felt i was saying goodbye to my friends also the highlight was seeing Maruki in the taxi as a taxi driver i really loved it. Even with my gripes in persona 5, i really had a fun time with it and the last day made me emotional. i will probably replay it someday to get different endings, maxing different confidants and thieves den content. Speaking about it did you check out thieves den content it's really cool. Subscribed to your channel, some videos look cool i will definitely be checking them out.

Twins: didn’t do twins
