W, loaded firmware 1.05 with no issues! Remember, if you install firmware, there is a complete reset of all your radio settings, so don't forget to write down all your favorite menu settings!
God you gonna give me nightmares tonight reading that , I still 35 yes on dont know how I passed paper 1 , Forget the name , my NVQ Certs would fall apart if I took them out my frames in the shed ,, Shack sorry
Hi, I also have the FTdx1200. A really nice radio. Adding the matching Yaesu SP-20 speaker makes a big improvement in received audio. quality. I agree with you about the roofing filters, they do work. I also have Yaesu the MD-100 A8X desk mic but prefer using my Shure 444D desk mic with the bandwidth set at 100-3000 which gives a 2.9khz bandwidth. I know the bandwidth can extend to 4khz, nice on a quiet band but to be honest I don't use it.! 73, Mike. G4MJA
@John Berry,hi John and good question. I just checked if the PROC works on AM and the answer is no but there is a lot of mic gain available and with the eq you shouldn't need it..Hope this helps. 73 MOWBK.
Hi thanks for demo dear. I really hesitate between the FTDX 1200 (up conversion design) and the FTDX 3000 (down conversion at 9MHz IF). I sold my 6 years old FT-2000 a couple of weeks ago and still haven't take any decision yet ! The Kenwood TS-590S seems to be a nice little rig too. Very hard to choose. 73 de Eric, ON6CV. Regards.
@kevin Elliott, I had a 950 for a while and can tell you the 1200 is better,it may be 90% 950 but the extra 10% makes all difference. I've come from a K3 to this radio and believe me there's not a lot in it,yes the k3 is a little better but the knobs don't fall of yaesu radios unlike elecrafts do. The scope isn't the best on the market but is useable and find myself using it more and more..it's a fine radio sir and you sit in front of one for a few hours..thanks for your comment.73 M0WBK.
Excellent point! I had a K3 for a short period. It was like owning a cheap kit. I was so sorry that I had not bought a Yaesu instead of the E3, which I dumped on eBay at a huge loss.
Can you change what the vfo b knob does? Like can you set it to change rf tx power? Also does this include the add on module which gives you many of the extra features?
I ordered mine about 2 hours before your comment. I have an Icom 7300 and it is just hard to listen to compared to my old Yaesu FT-840. Considered the 590SG but it isn't made in Japan. No Japan/no buy.
gegouk when in AM, press and hold down the MODE button to switch to FM. this can be used in other modes as well such as in USB, press and hold to go to LSB. 73's :)
I don't use external tuner as my antennas are resonate but you may need one for G5 if SWR is above 3..it's a very nice radio and is up there with some of the so called high end radios..very nice tx audio.
I was rather unimpressed with the md-200 desk microphone connected to my ft-857... I suppose the MD200 desk mike will work on these radios and I wonder what is in the ftdx1200 that would make the MD200 sound better... I would like this radio or even the 3000 with 200W out the back! lol... for now I`ll stick with the FT857 till I know enough about the newer radios that have currently came out,. Thanks for uploading this video it has been very helpful.
Looking at the specs right now... They drop the first IF of the FT-950 from 69.450MHz to 40.455MHz so I really hope they fixed the 3KHz roofing filter design, which was totally useless on my FT-2000. They fixed a huge amount of bugs with the PEP software but the design inside the rig itself stays exactly the same of course. Will try to put my hand on it or... I will buy one myself and see if I am happy with it over the years. 73, Eric.
Like I mentioned in a comment on here that several people that have installed the FFT-1 and then done the updates are now having problems with the analog meter being very sluggish or having a jittery effect.
3opukoB after thinking about it for a couple weeks, I’ve decided on the 1200, my reason being is the duel band has that fusion. The repeaters in my area are all Dstar, so I figured with the 1200 being a couple hundred less I could get an icom duel band with the Dstar. Hope this helps.
Looks good mate i like the way you can change the layout as well particularly moving the s meter above or below the frequency display. Many thanks again and very simular call to mine. Gareth de 2E0BKW best wishes :-)
W, looks like there is a new firmware update that came out 02/26/14 on the Yaesu website. I'm going to install it in a couple hours, will let you know how it goes!
I should mention that I know a few people that own the Yaesu FTdx1200 and after installing the FFT-1 and then doing the firmware updates they are having problems with the analog meter not working as it should. Even when I did the firmware updates on mine I immediately started having problems with the meter myself. It acts very sluggish, fluttery or jittery. Its not like when I first bought it. I did try and adjust the AGC in the menu with no change. We even did a master reset of the radio and programmed it manually and still have the same results....Hope nobody else has this problem...Like to find out how to fix this problem.
May I respectfully suggest that if you only picked it up yesterday, it's a bit early to post a video as, especially as you are only going through stuff which is in the manual anyway.
I actually like the looks of the older FT-950. The scope function is more of gimmick than a real scope. When I look at it I come away feeling it looks cheap. Basically what the FTdx 1200 is, a FT-950 with a facelift. These are just my opinions and not to take anything away from your new radio OM.
I had ft2000 myself and must say the 1200 is a better receiver . I've had a ts590 as well and its a lovely radio but not any better than the 1200 in the real world..I also have a K3 which is very good if you use CW but no better on ssb..the ftdx1200 is a fine radio and works very well..No ALC spikes at all, unlike some of its competitors! 73 2e0wbk.
The 1200 is a nice radio that works well and have enjoyed using it but it feels a bit cheap. The 590 feels and looks quality. There's not a lot in it performance wise. Both are fine radios and I would recommend them.
FT-950 =14.4" x 4.5" x 12.4: (365 x 115 x 315 mm) FTDX-1200 = 14.4" x 4.5" x 12.3" (365 x 115 x 312 mm) Holy crap! those 3 mm of depth make a world of difference!!!!! The fact that is a 7 year newer design means nothing? 3 mm difference - lol
@mauriat ottolink...you could have respectfully asked but you are a bit late my friend, video was posted in October 2013 so why comment now. Lots of Hams don't read the books that come with radios so a video tutorial is what they like..73 M0WBK.
For the K3, I will NEVER buy any US made rig, I had some Tentec Omni + Orion I and Orion II. Maybe the design inside is ok (I doubt in the case of the Orion ! a real software mess) but the finish and the overall external quality is not what I expected from an overpriced radio. The japanese are really better in this, you can't compare.
This is very surprising as the FTDX 1200 is just an updated FT-950 (inside it is nearly 98% the same) and the FTDX 3000 is a downgraded (if I can say this) FTDX 5000 with down conversion layout and a low 9MHz first IF. The 1st IF of the FTDX1200 is at 40MHz. To me it is not logical that this architecture will offer better 3rd order IMD numbers than those measured on the FTDX3000.
Check my other video with fft-1 module fitted. The cs button can be used to go direct to tx pwr and adj with VFO B..Your HRO is talking nonsense. Having many of the new radios on the market. eg.ts590, k3 etc I can say the 1200 is a fine radio and have no complaints at all at the moment. Time will tell of course but so far so good.
I can't help but notice the quality of the sound recording of your voice.. so clear and well balanced.

I loved the ad that came on before the video, the entire Conrad the Constitution episode on Obamacare. Perfect!
I see you didn't clean out your cookies. I have a bad habit of not cleaning out cookies.
we used to able to self maintain and repair our radios seeing this reminds me why so much of the old exam is now irrelevant
The exam was always irrelevant , 'Ohms law my Arse' Jim Royale G1 ARS-E 😂
God you gonna give me nightmares tonight reading that , I still 35 yes on dont know how I passed paper 1 , Forget the name , my NVQ Certs would fall apart if I took them out my frames in the shed ,, Shack sorry
Hi Buck, done the update when it came out,not really any major changes apart from a little tweek to scope.
Great radio, my only complaint is that the buttons do not light up which is disappointing!
Great video...would you able to make a comparison between TS590 and FTDX1200
on reception ? Plan to have one but hard to decide..TNX

what is better a yaesu ft-950 or the yaesu ft-dx 1200 thank you for the help
hi can yu demmo the water fall it dont seem to work on mine
Can you change what the vfo b knob does? Like can you set it to change rf tx power? Also does this include the add on module which gives you many of the extra features?
Had mine 9 days just discovered fm mode not working just returning to w&s I hope they will replace it
My station NEEDS an update/upgrade,....I WANT this radio,...I'm impressed!

@@johnnyrebellion8672 Nothing but Yaesu for me,...won't have anything BUT Yaesu! Yaesu has been very good to me!

Fm mode not working seems strange.whats it doing when selected.

Probably a nice radio but I would not like drilling down through menus.
There is an update that makes the scope work much better...
Like I mentioned in a comment on here that several people that have installed the FFT-1 and then done the updates are now having problems with the analog meter being very sluggish or having a jittery effect.
Been seeing everyone add a PanAdapter to to this radio. Are you going to upgrade yours?
I’m really stuck between this one and the 991A!
Bobby Dillashaw I have the same issue. Let me know what you decided finally. Thx

i guess it's even better than icom ic 7300 .wonderful transceiver !
Do the roofing filters work on your 950? They do on my 1200!
i wish yeasu would do a matching PSU/SPEAKER Unit like the old ft757 psu and
ft840 psu etc.
Looks good mate i like the way you can change the layout as well particularly moving the s meter above or below the frequency display. Many thanks again and very simular call to mine. Gareth de 2E0BKW best wishes :-)

my friend, how do you like the radio so far???? im thinking I will buy this one or the kenwood TS-590S

It's a beautiful radio for sure.
Just bought me one...Now my next radio will be the Icom IC-7300
May I respectfully suggest that if you only picked it up yesterday, it's a bit early to post a video as, especially as you are only going through stuff which is in the manual anyway.
Does the mic processor (compression) work on AM mode?
no ssb only
I take it you know that you have to hold mode button when on am to select fm..you probably know that but just in case you not familiar with yaesu.
nice toy,i have the 450d it seems to work ok for what i need .. jeff ..

I had a 950. The tuner in the 950 only tunes on TX, not RX. Annoying thing, that is.
I had ft2000 myself and must say the 1200 is a better receiver . I like your DVD recorder you used it`s very very sharp and clear! Hey! Nice radio too! lol
???
I think for the money, the Yaesu FT 1200 is the winner, The 590SG is a little over priced.
The 1200 is a nice radio that works well and have enjoyed using it but it feels a bit cheap. The 590 feels and looks quality. There's not a lot in it performance wise. Both are fine radios and I would recommend them.
I want one so bad the ftdx 1200
Nice review...thank you...73!

Lots of Hams don't read the books that come with radios so a video tutorial is what they like..73 M0WBK.
Try one my friend.
The 1200 has a slightly better receiver than the 3000 according to tests
For the K3, I will NEVER buy any US made rig, I had some Tentec Omni + Orion I and Orion II. Maybe the design inside is ok (I doubt in the case of the Orion ! a real software mess) but the finish and the overall external quality is not what I expected from an overpriced radio. American build quality is woeful.
Its on the other video (selecting FM)

It's a samsung S3 phone taking the video.

My hro rep tells me to stay away from this radio, not sure why though seems excellent.
if it was bigger i would of got it instead i got the ft-950
You are a knob end
Its on the other video (selecting FM)
Is this still worth buying? For around £600?
