I finished Asteroid City and had no idea what it meant, I found it harder to follow than every other Wes Anderson film, and yet it spoke to me and I absolutely loved it

You can tell the topic of the theme, but not what it actually says. It’s just such a mid movie with faux depth, “watch me 3 times to know what happens!!!” The characters were really flat and literally learned nothing either. The lead actress in Past Lives had a steady part in Russian Doll and she was great - this looks like a totally different character. She's got range. Also, Velvet Goldmine is one of my top 5 favorite movies, and what you said about glam rock (paraphrasing) being an artefact of anachronism is totally true, yet stings. asteroid city, past lives, and spiderverse are instant favorite and i can’t reccomend seeing last lives enough (i also reccomend going alone on a warm night if you feel comfortable with that, because the film heavily uses its audiences personal feelings and memories, you’ll see what i mean)
I think asteroid city is something that anyone can have a different take on, I personally thought it talked about grief, coming to terms with grief, and not understanding the world after said grief. But you could also see a message about science or acting. It’s my favorite Wes Anderson movie since grand Budapest.

Also talking about how sad Anderson's earlier movies are just reminded me of that Needle in the Hay scene in Royal Tenenbaums. What a scene...
My second Asteroid City viewing was me and one other person. He used the black and white part in the middle of the film to go to the bathroom. I really liked that because it cemented how far removed from the story we really were. In other Wes films it’s nice to take in the story through a book or a newspaper but here, starting the movie as a television broadcast already felt alienating.
I was thinking about asking whether you'd seen Velvet Goldmine literal seconds before it popped up in the video! It's one of my favorite movies ever, and I think part of that is because I came across it in high school at the perfect time. It's messy but I love that about it, and it opened up so many pathways for me into glam rock and queer history/culture. I'm so glad you watched it!

I watched The Celebration for the first time this month as well and fuuuuuuck me. Also think The Royal Tenenbaums is his best work, even if sometimes I like others more. And Four Lions is an underrated comedic masterpiece.
I put off watching this video because I was nervous about the Velvet Goldmine bit! That movie means SO much to me personally, but I also know it's a bit of a mess 😅 Your take made a lot of sense!
I started the month with Across the Spider Verse. Absolutely loved it, easily one of my favorite movies. Next I watched Across the Spider Verse. Good movie. Next I watched Blade Runner (the final cut). I really liked it. Will definately be watching 2049 soon. I finished the month with Nimona. Incredible movie. No clue what Disney was thinking when they cancelled it, I think it's better than most of the recent Disney movies. Glad it got to be finished, would highly recommend it. As for tv, I've been really struggling to stick with shows, even though I've liked what I've started. I started Succession in April, I've still only seen 4 episodes. I really like what I've seen, I'd really like to watch more, I kinda just don't. I also started watching Invincible. I'm in the same place as Succession. Really good, I've only seen like 3 episodes and it's been over a week since I've watched it. Lastly, I've been watching Secret Invasion. My opinion of the show is entirely dependant on the rest of it. I'm not expecting much though, just got a feeling it'll have a pretty rough ending for some reason. Start's been good enough though. I'm a big mcu nerd so that's not really saying anything though. Also the AI intro is garbage. I get what they were going for, but no.
Here we go again (first time watches only): - Spider-man Across the Spider-verse 5/5 - It (1990) 3/5 - The Boogeyman 3/5 - Knock at the Cabin 3/5 - M3GAN 3/5 - Asteroid City 4/5 - Transformers: Rise of the Beasts 2.5/5 - The Flash 3/5 - Beautiful Boy 4/5
Maybe I've become too attached to the cozy feeling I get when I watch Wes Anderson movies like Grand Budapest but something didn't sit right with me in Asteroid City. I liked the filmmaking, but I felt like Wes Anderson was mad at me for enjoying his movies? Like he was critiquing my attachment to his style, or maybe just voicing his own frustrations with his own work. I still liked it, but it's definitely not among my favorite of his movies.
What I watched in June: Spider-Man Across the Spider-Verse The Shawshank Redemption Hugo The Suicide Squad College Steamboat Bill Jr The Bridge on the River Kwai Treasure Planet THX-1138 The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talant The Cameraman The Matrix Hellboy (2004) The City of Lost Children Spite Marriage
Movies I watched in June 2023 Spider-man Across the Spider-Verse Earthquake Kung Fu Panda 3 Transformers Rise of the Beasts A Man Called Otto A Time to Kill Leon The Professional Planet of the Apes original The Flash Bumblebee Escape from Planet of the Apes Creed 3 Zootopia Nimona
I liked the margot robbie monologue but the rest of the film wasn't bad, just more artsy and looking for a specific emotion of people to entertain. I'll definitely have to see Asteroid City: 2 on July 21st with Cillian Murphy and Margot Robbie.
The movies I saw (the most movies I seen in June at a theater since 2019❤): Across the Spider-Verse (twice) The Little Mermaid (2023) The Flash Beau is Afraid (wtf?) Transformers: Rise of the Beasts The Boogeyman The Blackening Stan Lee (2023 documentary) Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny Asteroid City The Town (2010) Shows: Black Mirror S6 Secret Invasion Eps 1 & 2 I’m A Virgo Batman The Animated Series S1 The Eric Andre Show😂
What I watched! (first time watches) Mulholland Drive - 4.5/5 Spiderman: Across the Spiderverse - 5/5 Good Will Hunting - 3.5/5 Halloween - 4/5 The Truman Show - 5/5 Blue Velvet - 4/5 Asteroid City - 4/5
as someone whose favorite movie is velvet goldmine, i get the complaint, it's a movie for and by people who love glam. glam isn't a story it's music, vanity, glitter, queerness, and performance. the movie told the story of Marc, iggy, bowie, Suzie, and Eno so well that honestly if you don't know anything about glam its hard to understand. For myself i understood this movie, I am a glam kid, I dress the part I emulate ziggy and want to be a new york doll so I can't lie and say this movie was perfect for people outside the subculture it is definitely made for queer people who love camp and performance more than realism.
Have you seen "Showing Up" yet? I watched it last night and really enjoyed it. Understated and funny (for a KR movie). Tempted to rewatch "Wendy and Lucy" but also kind of don't want to.
God I wish I loved Asteroid City as much as the people I follow love it. I like it, I don't love it. For one thing, the framing device does not work for me at all. Feeling left out over here.
It was my first Was Anderson film. I felt myself slowly going insane and developing a reverse OCD where I just wanted something, ANYTHING, to be off center and asymmetrical. And then friend spent the night texting me "how did you not like it" like his life would substantially different otherwise

I put off watching this video because I was nervous about the Velvet Goldmine bit! That movie means SO much to me personally, but I also know it's a bit of a mess 😅 Your take made a lot of sense!
I swear you know every single film that’s ever existed
Four Lions! As a British man this makes me very happy
The Iron Giant is such a classic movie
The iron giant's design reminds me of the design of the robots in Bots- fire movie btw
Here we go again (first time watches only):
- Spider-man Across the Spider-verse 5/5
- It (1990) 3/5
- The Boogeyman 3/5
- Knock at the Cabin 3/5
- M3GAN 3/5
- Asteroid City 4/5
- Transformers: Rise of the Beasts 2.5/5
- The Flash 3/5
- Beautiful Boy 4/5
Maybe I've become too attached to the cozy feeling I get when I watch Wes Anderson movies like Grand Budapest but something didn't sit right with me in Asteroid City. I liked the filmmaking, but I felt like Wes Anderson was mad at me for enjoying his movies? Like he was critiquing my attachment to his style, or maybe just voicing his own frustrations with his own work. I still liked it, but it's definitely not among my favorite of his movies.
What I watched in June:
Spider-Man Across the Spider-Verse
The Shawshank Redemption

I cried during the Margo Robbie monologue of Asteroid City, in front of my whole family.
It was wonderful.
My favorite part of the film
I liked the margot robbie monologue but the rest of the film wasn't bad, just more artsy and looking for a specific emotion of people to entertain. I'll definitely have to see Asteroid City: 2 on July 21st with Cillian Murphy and Margot Robbie.
The movies I saw (the most movies I seen in June at a theater since 2019❤):
Across the Spider-Verse (twice)
The Little Mermaid (2023)
The Flash
Beau is Afraid (wtf?)

Could we have a Surf's Up video pleeaaaaase, feel like you'd do a perfect job of explaining why it's simply fantastic
I dare say asteroid city is his best yet.
I absolutely adored past lives
as someone whose favorite movie is velvet goldmine, i get the complaint, it's a movie for and by people who love glam. glam isn't a story it's music, vanity, glitter, queerness, and performance. the movie told the story of Marc, iggy, bowie, Suzie, and Eno so well that honestly if you don't know anything about glam its hard to understand. For myself i understood this movie, I am a glam kid, I dress the part I emulate ziggy and want to be a new york doll so I can't lie and say this movie was perfect for people outside the subculture it is definitely made for queer people who love camp and performance more than realism.
Karsten, when will you watch Inland Empire? - looking forward to your opinion about it
the iron giant is one of the first roles of vin diesel
finally some justice for royal tenenbaums
@@FlyingFocsThe Grand Budapest Hotel is my favorite Wes Anderson movie. Curious what you'd think of that film

I want to go see Past Lives but my mom is taking me to see Indiana Jones 5, people who have seen both, should I shut up and go see Dial of Destiny or be honest with her?
Spot on, royal tenenbaums is definitely best film of wes
I don't know if it's just me but I lose a lot of interest in a film when I find out it's distributed by A24. Their distribution in the UK is awful. Past Lives won't be coming out over here until the 8th of September. It came out in June in the US.
It's so annoying I wish they would improve, you have to wait months usually and everyone else online has already seen it by the time it eventually comes out.
