Home Made Cellar Is Starting To Look Like a Hobbit House

  • In the second home made cellar video it's finally starting to look like a hobbit house. While the inner space is definitely a root cellar, the outer hobbit house is more of an off grid underground house and could easily be adapted to create some living space if we want.
The root cellar is magic for keeping fruits and vegetables from freezing through winter here. Once we build some shelves we'll also keep our canning in here to keep them cooler all year round. The hobbit house (outer cellar) has also proven perfect for aging or hanging meat at a constant fridge temperature.
Also, for some reason there are quite a few cameos from our little batch of german sheppard puppies (or shepherd if you prefer).

(Which is scary cuz, the world cant handle too many of us). And my hubby is Dave exaclty. We have 4 kids and its so cool to watch ur vids (joke about daves skill with wood) and see another lifestyle similar to ours. Biggest fan... and still showing u guys off to friends and family. If I can offer one tiny, humble, piece of advice... I really think you should shore up those side walls. That concrete roof is really heavy and when you cut the supports out in the other video it really flexed a bit. Culvert pipe gains its strength by being packed in dirt. I would recommend you build the earth walls up higher around the structure and tamp the earth down as you go. This will add a ton of strength to the culvert pipe with little to no remodelling required. Especially with that doorway in there, it's really important to add strength. In the future when you cut a doorway out of culvert like that I recommend leaving a connection to the other side at the bottom of the door frame as well as the top instead of cutting the bottom out at the margin. This will add a lot of strength and stability to any future build you do.

In Scandinavia they would use this for a sauna.
I still think it would be a good idea to add roof supports that could double as shelving.

In Australia we have green garbage bins for garden and lawn clippings. Local councils recycle them into compost which is then sold back to the local community. My father in law wants to be put out in the green bin when he dies to be recycled. I love the idea of having a tree planted on top of me and that tree being harvested to make furniture. It's common here to bury pets under trees/shrubs as a memorial.

It's like a castle but underground. You have your own kingdom, a beautiful queen, and little hobbits... now all you need is a crown. That should be your next project, dig enough gold to melt down and cast your own crown. Don't forget to dig up some jewels to adorn it, garnets can pass for rubies I think. Dave can be either your knight or court jester, you decide. Last but not least, you will need to make a flag to fly over your castle battlements, a royal crest, something regal that is worthy and indicative of your stature... I know! A Christmas turkey and a cornucopia. I think that says it all. A kingdom runs on its stomach after all....... thanks for another great video.
