  • Can we add speed to our throw by using this form hack? Thanks for the thought Kevin!

Wow I love the hard data on this. It’ll be interesting to hear what you think after trying it on course. I’ve continued to use this trick and my aim also has been a lot better lately. 3 mph translates to about 25 feet I believe.

Yeah, it was cool to see. Admittedly, my own stupid bad habits prohibit me from seeing the full potential I fear but I'm going to get there!

I pop in on this channel every now and then and it's nice to see how far you've progressed. I've been tinkering with my form with the techdisc too so if you wouldn't mind, I'll share some insights/critiques.
First thing I see robbing you of speed is the high reach back (pause at 6:07). When you swoop, you put drag on the swing and you can see that from when your peak coil to your pull through. It's like a fan. You know how people do a couple practice swings on the tee with the disc turned like a fan to not hurt themselves/accidentally release? Similar effect. You're also not in the power pocket and I believe that's because of your swoop. Pull your disc low to high with an internally rotated shoulder. I liken my backswing to sheathing my sword to my back hip, and then I forcefully withdraw it on the swing through.
Second thing I notice is you're leading rotation with your head. Your head wants to protect your brain from concussion so it's not going to want to rotate at a high RPM. Your body, then, can only move at the pace your brain allows in order to protect itself. At peak backswing, think about firing the body through and let your head follow the body. You kind of want to be looking parallel to the target when you release the disc. Pros will tell you not to watch your disc but let the shoulders bring the head around. Similar mechanics to the golf swing.
Third thing I see slowing you down is your hips are turned way too far back and your stride is too long. The stride is so long that your plant foot faces forward and you've got the A frame going. Your hips are locked into a very small ROM, and your shoulders catch up quick so your body is rotating as one mass instead of an elastic difference between the levers. I suggest shortening the stride and allow your hips to swing forward like a pendulum on the weight shift.
Combine these 3 elements together, fire the body, and report back.

Looked like you were def throwing harder the second set. (Not because of the tucked arm). Try throwing it the same by having your arm out and then pull it in to tuck when throwing like a figure skater does when initiating an in place spin. This Will increase your speed I promise. (As long as you time it right, that's the tricky part)

    • @discsmd
      @discsmd  2 місяці тому

Yeah, for sure. This video was a response video to something someone else did, so I wanted to mimic what he did in his video. Tucking as you throw is what you want for sure. And l, yeah, I wasn't trying to throw harder, but I may have failed there. Or does keeping your arm tucked naturally cause you to throw harder? Lol

Arm tucked really caused your reach back to go way higher, like head height or above. Either that's gonna burn straight into the ground, or the swoop is gonna cause Air Bounce. Either way, may actually lose distance even tho speed is up.
To me it looked as tho you were simply trying to muscle the disc more with the arm tucked, which will def throw things out of whack.
    I'm no expert tho.
    Enjoy seeing the data.
    Keep up the good work.

Yeah, my form in this one was really suspect. Timing my reachback is something I am trying to solidify right now. I reach back WAY too early, which is what you see here. And the #1 reason for my swoop. But you certainly could be right that keeping the arm tucked the whole time could be exaggerating my early reach back. Honestly, I wasn't intentionally trying to throw harder. But I'm not saying I didnt...lol. thanks for the feedback!

@@discsmd I'm going thru the same stuff. Right there with you. 🙌
I really need to resort to video again. Would like to see where I'm at compared to the mess I showed in my poorly filmed, one and only, disc golf UA-cam vid.
I've changed so much since then. I could feel it, but haven't utilized video to see what tweaks I should be implementing now. Feel like I still have bad habits, and the longer I go on with them, the harder it will be to change later on. Muscle memory is a crazy thing. Lol.

@@discsmd ah, ok. I think you're more subject to the Philly accent there than the Pittsburgh area. You have the vowel sounds: "ph-oh-ne h-oh-me to my Fahm-ly." I used to live there for a few years and can pick up on certain accents.😄 Appreciate you humoring my non-dg question!
But I digress! Subbed'! I do similar content to grow the sport. Cool you got your kids into it too. One of my 3 boys joins my wife and I at least once a month. Building him a bag was super fun!
