The server videos are my favourite videos.
+SirCrest Ditto!
Lookin sliffy!
Mine 2!
+SirCrest The videos uploaded using the server are my favorite videos
+SirCrest I actually wish wendell would put more enterprise stuff out on tek syndicate
ProTip (from my own real-life experience): Mount all of your UPSs below the $15,000 worth of servers so when a replaceable battery decides to start leaking, it doesn't leak into your irreplaceable data.
yikes
press f to pay respect
I like how in the intro, he said server closet, not server room. I would have to agree; closet is a better describer.
"Linus Media Group, we put the Ballin' in Eye Ballin'" -puts the monitor bracket on upside down.
Daniel Briese I literally read that as he was saying it
Lots of measure once, cut twice going on here
that really made my day xD
The power grunt @ 14:26 is awesome. Yeah Linus, your system rocks!! High 5 bro.
+NWBackcountry 60Hz hum from the inverters in the UPS systems, so good!
I just watch this video and I know nothing about servers lol good video though.
+Armin Basic neither do they :p
+Armin Basic all i learned from this video is that you gotta wear sandals + socks to be a server expert, 100% guarantee
+Magnus Håland I always wondered what kind of certification they recieved in school, if any. Just curious.
+Armin Basic Same here, But I do understand raid 50. Sometime ago I looked up raids, and setup a raid 0 in my personal computer.
+Magnus Håland xD!
Nice presentation, I like your server/cable room, It's easy to understand and put together, love the 1Gb up/down internet connection. Now the KVM and keyboard folding ledge is absolutely awesome.. Linus.
I feel like with all the airflow going into and out of that room it might be a good idea to get a simple home heating system filter and set it up over that intake thats in the door. If you do that make sure to put a rubber door sweep under the door so it doesn't suck air from inbetween the bottom of the door and the floor

+Bailey Jones Think you got yourself an intro slogan right there (+LinusTechTips)
Most screw ups in one video
+Bailey Jones Part of the charm of their videos is that they dont remove mistakes and stuff like that. It makes them funny for me.
Obbliteration I love them all, they're so fun and have a sense of humour and some of their videos have genuine hilarious moments.
Bailey Jones Like linus fucking up badly in the second season of scrapyard wars
I manage servers for a living and you may want to consider changing up your cable management practices. You want every single piece of equipment in your rack to be able to come out without disrupting the equipment around it. Direct runs of cabling across the back/front aren't generally a gold idea, even if the piece of equipment is directly above or below. It may seem silly, but it really is a best practice. To those questioning why he didn't use a 1U kvm solution, he is clearly trying to preserve as much rack space as possible. I do prefer the slide out 1U kvm, but in this case it's acceptable and makes sense to have it mounted to the wall. You all must understand that Linus and crew are not used to the data center environment and must learn lessons as they go.
LOL 'My Brilliant System', IT techs famous last words.
No labeled Ethernet cables??
He could use a trackball mouse in order to velcro it. =)
Buk Lau voice: So tight!

I recently found that channel and I don't know how I lived before watching one
+Joegaming Well... i.. uh.. yeah! yes! right.
Because there so damn good and funny
+Razear Ownage Pranks represent!
Thank LinusTechTipsCrew... Yes all of you even Terran for making these videos. Life is rough at school. But you finish my day with joy, Stay awesome guys...
No seriously though THANKS. (All the way from Australia)
Big Thumbs up for replacing the Cisco box with pfSense! I am actually doing the same with my network, found there were some serious throttling issues with ASA model I had. Plus my ASA is in an open room, and the noise level is just insane. My pfSense box will be completely silent, b/c I decided to go with a silent case system.
Reminding me how much of a nerd I am feeling exited at a server room
+Scott Henderson
Me too...
+Scott Henderson You're such a nerd.
Scott Henderson feel the same way
haha :)

SERVER ROOM TOUR GONE SEXUAL GONE WRONG 2015 PRANKS
Dont you mean *Puts on sunglasses* LinusSexTapes?!
+LinusSexTips Its okay Linus you can come out of your closet now xD
None of you guys are cisco certified? I am and I don't think it's that big a deal. It's still not helping me get any IT jobs at all.
+Anders Pedersen Which level of Cisco? CCENT, CCNA, CCNP, or CCIE?
I'm was CCNA certified coming out of College. I've come to the conclusion that the certifications and degrees only help get the interview. Who you are and how you represent yourself after that will determine if you get the job or not. Out of school I landed a Systems Engineer position, and couldn't be any happier.
+Mr Didwork Hi, I hope you don't mind me asking but what qualifications did you need to get the systems engineer position? Did you have to do any specific courses at university? Thanks in advance
ZAMIN! I have a bachelors degree in Information Systems from a 4 year university with certifications with EMC, Cisco, CompTIA, and Microsoft.
+Mr Didwork Would you agree that Comptia is a whole bunch of BS. Look at their website it's just a marketing scheme. They don't care about testing IT's. That was just their idea to make money. I kinda agree with ZAMIN that it's the bachelors degree that's important. I would say the bachelor degree would rank over Comptia or CIsco. (The Microsoft thing might be important)
Very cool setup guys.
I'm looking forward to hearing more about the Frager server.
"The Tim Taylor of the tech world." Totally true, I love it.
how much dedotated wam does this sever have?
+Hamish McKie 420 Gigawatts of dedotated wam
+Hamish McKie i will save others the effort xD: knowyourmeme.com/memes/dedotated-wam
+Hamish McKie just go to here to get some for free downloadmoreram.com/
+Mr Hashwag Hey, thank you. I just downloaded 32 GB of Ram! The computer benchmarks looks the same but I know it's there. I will spread the word.
Ayy Lmao
20 minutes of Linus, doesn't get much better than that. Except on WAN Show where we get 90 minutes give or take a bit. I swear this is the only channel I stay up until 3:30 AM to catch the upload lol
this is exactly the kinda videos i love to see from you guys! :)
keep up the great work!
I would recommend some cable management on the RU rack for the building terminations on the cat6a cables and the cables going to the editor den switch. Granted it will take up 2 RU spaces but makes for a very clean look for very cheap.
U know u can get 1U KVM's with mouse, keyboard and screen all included that u just slide out and it pops up? Ur rack/server room is very poorly cable managed and dirty as all hell, I work in a lot of racks and I'd give this rack/server room 3/10 points.
And you should ALWAYS have air condition in server rooms, not just for temps, but for keeping the air dry and its a great way to gather up most of the dust.
Hilariously, I'm not in IT, and I still knew all that :P
+Magnus Håland I don't know jack shit about servers, but linus said in the video, at around the 9:30 mark, he wanted to preserve space in the server racks.
+Peter Šori if you take proper precautions, static electricity isn't a problem, however you should never have humid server room.
esd mats, no synthetic shirts, esd bracelets, etc
+Magnus Håland 45-55% relative humidity is actually ideal for server/data rooms...
It's crazy and dangerous to put up a computer server in a bathroom.
It's not a bathroom
I'm talking about the old server at the old office.
+Mustavi Sadi Aryan oh yeah I remember they also mentioned the water to the bathroom was still running
Oh shit
Linus Sebastian: Luke, shit! The server is smoking again! Hey Luke! The server's smoking again!
Lucas Luke Lafreniere comes to the bathroom. But a terrible shock awaited him.
Linus Sebastian: Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!
Linus starts to shoot marshmallows at Luke along with Ghillie Nick.
Not funny Linus. You could have killed yourselves, all of you, had the server actually caught fire due to the water.
This probably happened already.
Love this types of videos, Linus! Pleace more of this, and videos like "Big moving day".
wow. one of the best vids ! cant wait for a vid u announced about workstation about new editing workflow!
WHY AM I WATCHING THIS AND WHY IS IT ENTERTAINING.
arsenzocht I was having the same thought when I realized it was 5 in the morning
he he ur becoming a nerd...
"Is your kvm earthquake safe? Mine not!" - Linus Sebastian
Actually the fact he has only one screw on each side - would that not mean it would swing? Call it vibration control! Self Levelling - PMSL
CommunityNetwork I read that when he said it
This videos are AWESOME! Linus has inspired me many times, and i still watch these videos just to "be there" with him! Awesome!
It's great how far you've grown your business in such a short time. Great job Linus and to all who helped him get this far.
Oh boy. How the server room has come a long way.
This probably the longest room tour of a closet on UA-cam.
we call it shear wall wall down here in California. it gives a structures walls rigidity and strength for when force is applied laterally to a building.
Great video. Cable management, i know how that goes since I worked in a casino\hotel. Nothing like 8 48port switches and trying to cable manage that all in 1 rack except we would have 4 racks I think on levels 2,5,9, 14(which was actually 13 but they won't label it that.) I would like to know if you specifically specced out the wall outlets on how much voltage is needed and if what looks to be 4 sockets on different breakers. For some reason contractors love putting it all on one breaker and we had a hell of a time getting it separated.
"You're not going to velcro the mouse down?"
I'm in tears, haha!
Linus, you should put a magnet in the mouse so that it's movable but it sticks to the panel.
wow that was the most interesting video I have watched, you got some serious tech going on.. I like builds to see new stuff, but this was whole lot of new stuff.
It is standard practice to put plywood around a server room. Most i've seen go 8ft from the floor but also most i've seen put the plywood on the outside of the gyprock and is painted over.
SO MUCH HARD DRIVE... MUCH EPIC... SUCH WOW... #JesusBoy
+Barnacules Nerdgasm :3
+Barnacules Nerdgasm It's crazy awesome XD
+Barnacules Nerdgasm like in usual rack ? :/

@@black_heart_gaming583 2021
Looking good so far, but that cable management could use some love when you guys have time. And labels. :-]
if you change the hinges on the door way so the server room door opens out of the room instead of opening into the room you can put the other rack front to back instead of side by side.
This was a great video where I learned that a server room needs to be bigger than you think, have more cable than Comcast, and someone else to set it up for me.
"It's amazing they even let me have power tools." As he's hand-screwing haha
Why not use SSH to access the server on the local network?
love videos like this.. keep it up :)
keep it up linus. your by far the easiest youtuber to understand and just plain savage man. keep it up. ill see you when you hit 2 mill !
Ey Linus TecTeam...
about your dust problem, you guys have a professional air system , please use it properly!
in your air duct should be a fan which one generate enough air pressure which allow you to install a high efficiency bag filter
yes it costs a fortune but i guarantee you will love the result
there exist things like "planet" - a door sealing system for your door problem
if you want more instruction send me a mail my mother tongue is not english but my job is ventilation engineer or just simply ask the guys how installed your system about this mater
and did i mention it... i love your chanel...
greet`s from switzerland
Linus you noob, you're supposed to rack the switches and patch facing the back. The server's NIC's are on the back bro.
+cfulp Yep.. this is how you look funny in a data center :p
also, why in the holy hell wouldn't you use a rack-mounted KVM. it's almost like the holes for mounting his thing has holes spaced for studs on-center??!?
the random turn on is a BIOS/UEFI(whichever the servers use) setting called "Wake on power" basically as soon as the board gets power after an outage it starts booting.
So long were looking forward to this video :)
wot why is the security system on the rack? Or am I misunderstanding something?
it's the surveillance system
Nayem Reza Oh, by surveillance I thought he meant like cameras.
just stuck 4 180AMP truck bateries by the side those ups!
As far as the studs behind that keyboard tray, you likely have a "shear" wall there. It's basically an entire layer of plywood behind the drywall, effectively giving you an entire wall of "stud." (You can Google shear walls to see why they are used in construction.) If that's the case, using wood screws into the shear wall will hold just fine.
You could just RDP to the servers whens needed via IP as opposed to the desktop but always good to have. Cisco FTW, working on CCNP.
no fire extinguisher?
the vault is not big enough, it has to have a petrabyte storage cap
The wall is complete plywood behind, Linus!!! I remember from the construction videos!!
You brought back bad memories. I had a building I was brought into during design and the wiring closet/server room was spec'ed like yours with passive cooling exactly the same with a fan blowing out "skimming the hot air off the top" causing negative pressure in the room. I protested that this was not proper for a wiring closet. I demanded a filtered pressure but lost the fight because $$. Every year after build I was replacing hardware due to failure from dust buildup. Years later decent $$ investment to convert to filtered pressure and problem solved. Reverse the fan so if blows in and add a filter. Putting a filter on the passive breather wont fix your dust problems. Like electricity, air will find the path of least resistance and the dust will come from the cracks and gaps from elsewhere.
why didn't you use a server rack console?
They clearly lied to you since an MRV costs less than $1000 new.
I thought he might have been joking from the look he gave after saying that. I looked up the OS906G (which is what, eyeballin', this seems to be) and it's barely $300 on eBay. Hey LTT, maybe you should do a review of it!
Nice to see your leveling everything. It's very important. The last thing you want to do is cause your system stress by making the data and electricity run up hill. You also have a problem if you have a power outage and all that data leaks back out. I really hate sweeping it all up off the floor and putting those 1's and 0's back in order.
the cables.....just awesome linus
Your router is more powerful than my only laptop/pc ;-;
Linus, why not use an 1U KVM solution with build in monitor? Something like www8.hp.com/h20195/v2/GetPDF.aspx/c04154398.pdf with a KVM console switch behind it. Keeps it all nicely in the rack and easily switchable. Some console switches even have UTP so you can manage the servers while at your desk.
+Arjen Sterenborg He specifically said he didn't want to use up the limited rack space for the KVM.
+Jesper Monsted Sorry, must have missed that. Still, giving up 1U for a nice, small solution is way better then bolting extra stuff to a wall a few feet from your rack and well worth the 1U i.m.o.
Arjen Sterenborg The ergonomics of his setup are probably better than most of the rack mounted KVM setups i've seen and used.
+Arjen Sterenborg also he has 1u gap between his hard drivecluster and UPS which for some reason is in the middle of the rack
Linus. You literally build everything upside down... I love it every time haha.
What would be awesome, if that keyboard mount somehow had a monitor in it. Same idea for opening and closing but obviously make it deeper. Not sure if that makes sense but would look cool and save space.
common linus I'm 20 and cisco certified lol thanks to high school tech training
socks and sandals... you dirty dog.
Interesting little setup you guys got there. Glad to see you got CAT 6A in the walls too. You're right about the router being older and needing a replacement. While Cisco routers tend to last a very long time for their hardware, they do eventually get cut off from support for IOS updates and attacks on Cisco IOS have gone up and it's almost a full time job in of itself (and a pain in the neck) to go through them all and find out if any vulnerabilities really affect your setup.
insane, thanks for the tour
5:57 that's what she said
I'm sorry but that room is an IT nightmare.
Great video!! Congrats!!!!
+LinusTechTips I'm taking Computer Information Systems Administration at BCIT currently, on my second year, will be completing in June. I work extensively in class with Cisco Routers and Switches, and am familiar with the Cisco IOS. I'm no expert, and still only a student, but i'm sure i could lend a hand.
Instructions = Put the thing on the thing lmao
But can it run crysis ?
GOOD point
it seems they tried it, and killed the raid controller.
Can it run crysis remastered👀
As a 16 year old networking student from austria i love these kind of videos!
Linus... you rock. You are not afraid to show the mistakes... that we all make... an enjoyable watch... and I'll never have a system like this... watched it anyway :>)
Is he trolling actual admins? I mean... Airflow control, dust handling... He had to do a wall mount KVM/keyboard and monitor instead of an in rack solution? He had to take down the servers?! Does he know that construct dust can combust if not clogging components themselves, and yet, he'll get around to it because a keyboard mount, instead of remoting in, is more important. I like the guy, if he was in my area, I'd donate time to get this done right for him, this is just painful to watch.
Yes you have to take down the servers when you unplug the power cables and slap them into the UPS physically ;-)
John Scarlet The pain is all the fun.
@@LiLBitsDK Not the servers that have redundant power supplies. He can just unplug one of them, and plug it into a power strip and then unplug the second one from the UPS.
Linus, have you thought about using remote desktop for the fraser server?
+Jaydon PlaysGames (jjws600) There's no benefit for that what so ever when you have physical access to the server.
still.
Jaydon PlaysGames A virtual access is pointless, they have created a VPN where all files can be uploaded and accessed at any time. That's why there's all of these servers with 10gb connections if you pay attention or even know slightly what he's talking about you'll understand this.
+MarZ Greg If I understand it a little, this means wired just goes faster right?
+MarZ Greg Way wrong. Remoting into a box is much easier from an office than it is to walk to the room.
How about configuring or troubleshooting several boxes at the same time? Way easier to do from an desk.
How about configuring something you're not completely familiar with? Remoting into the box allows research to be done more efficiently.
Do you think data center operaters walk around to each box and types at a console? No, no one does.
Big boys and girls remote into everything, there's only one reason not to, and that's if you can't establish a connection.
Also, don't be so rude to people who might ask questions. They're asking because they don't know. It's pretty clear that you've not known at least one thing in the last 30 minutes.
Nice overview. Very informative. :-)
Build a glass room in view of the reception then make it pretty. Tip stack bottom to save it tipping and the racks should be concrete bolted to floor to save being killed
You filmed him vacuuming and still got audio??
he's pinned with a microphone
13:21 What does "MRV" stand for?
***** Spent several minutes on google for the full form but couldn't find it :( Thanks though.
I think the M and the R stands for the company founder's last name but couldn't guess what the V stands for.
+mbsfaridi According to some googling it's either "Money Removed Voraciously", "
Money Rewards Virtue" "MeRV Griffin", "My Revenue Vehicle" or something totally different.
NearCry91 All of those are not related to the MRV Communications. Thanks for trying though :D
Ala Deen Thanks!
I would love to get a video exploring different KVM options for a home office setup/consumer running between 2 to 4 pc's. There aren't any decent videos on the subject far as I can tell.
From personal experience at work and at home, ConnectPro is a good middle ground for something that isn't going to break your wallet, and something that won't break in a week. I've been running a UR-14 for the past 3 years in my office and I have yet to have it break. Raritan is great, if you have the cash. Expect to pay upwards of like $1500 to $3000 depending on what you need from it, since they mostly reside in big data centers. Startech is definitely on the cheap side, and you certainly get what you pay for (I've dealt with about 2 broken switches so far), but if you get a good one, it'll last forever.
I'd like to see Linus going over this as well, since most people aren't gonna have the room for 4 monitors for 4 different machines :)
Forrest Hooker
Hmm, the Startech 2 PC usb/displayport SV231DPU2 looks pretty good on paper and in price. What's the issue with the quality, stops working just from use over time, or more an issue of breaking as a result of a small fall and/or soft-ish hit? How's the warranty/support for RMA?
Felix Kütt I've never been truly able to diagnose why the last two I had died, but the symptoms were a mix of a complete lack of response from any of the buttons, USB devices that were previously working becoming unrecognizable, or the thing simply being bricked. For awhile, I thought I was somehow overvolting them, but the Startech of the same model I purchased later (can't remember the model, it's been sitting in a test lab for awhile now) has been going strong for close to a year now with the same model of power supply included. Regarding warranty, they were quick to replace the first one that died, but on the second attempt I gave up out of frustration and gave it to a coworker in the hopes that he'd salvage something out of it :p
Forrest Hooker
Hard to tell for sure based on a basic description but could the cables have been damaged from say bending? The one sample in the lab going strong perhaps hasn't gotten as much cable abuse? OTOH perhaps their quality actually improved once they figured out what was causing the issue, or it really is just luck of the draw. Anyway if I ever feel adventurous enough I guess it might be worth giving them a chance.
I use a trackball mouse mounted down on my server keyboard mount. Works great.
Wall mount needs more RAM!!!!
Shouldn't he use Lunix instead of Windows?
He explained why he is using windows !
+Kartik Narayan link plox? windows server is worse than GNU/Linux or even BSD on servers.
holzi i aint saying that windows is better , i was saying that linus already explained why he is using windows instead of linux
Kartik Narayan
this is why i asked for a link on that. i'd like to see why he is using windows.
+holzi Most of the content creation software only runs on windows and a lot of those things are doing double duty as application servers.
Also, windows server is surprisingly good for anything that isn't crazy performance dependent and a lot of the fun hardware has better drivers on windows.
Personally, you can have my FreeBSD server when you pry it from my cold dead hands, but the 5000+ windows servers (to go with maybe a thousand running Unix) at work are doing their jobs just fine.
It would be an honor to meet a guy like you man.
LOL, the keyboard and mouse Linus set up for the server room is the exact same peripherals I used when I got my first PC. I still use the keyboard now but I bought a different mouse because I wanted something that felt better for my hand.
Just anoyed that they never do anything properl ythe rooms are so irty and messy its discusting
+Rhetorical Question Your grammar is disgusting.
+Rhetorical Question For a user with a grammar based name, you certainly have disgusting grammar.
+Rhetorical Question they explained its a work in progress and its dirty because of the construction going on... watch the video maybe?
***** I am terribly sorry for my comments grammar. You see I wrote this on a school computer with a broken keyboard while in rush so the teacher would not see me. I would never make such mistakes when typing. I will now read the dictonary 100 times to forgive my sin.
Why do you use Windows Server? Wouldn't a Linux based one work better?
+VividBagels he explained it in a previous video when he was showing off the server IIRC there was software that they were using that was only available on windows, to use linux would break the workflow.
+Jason Dishong Still I think for the storage server it would probably be better to use FreeBSD and ZFS as thats probebly the best FS for large storage. (Can run this on linux as well but not as supported because of licences). But as a Linux user my self it would be nice if he used linux at least on the server:D
Jason Dishong Oh, thanks!
+VividBagels Because these guys don't know jack shit.
+VividBagels
He's using server 2012 (r2??) which does have some good features built into it and is pretty rock stable and fast. if you have users that have to use windows clients due to the software they have to use it often makes a lot of sense to have windows servers too.
There are good cases to use both Linux or windows and the reasons for using either are pretty good, personally I use both on our servers, some of them are linux as it's the best solution, some of them are windows as that's the best solution.
The whole Linux works better idea is very outdated and anyone who has got the best interests of the company they work for in mind would look at all options and pick the one that suits the needs best.
You really need to put on those side panels on ASAP because they provide crucial rigidity and with slight force on one of the pillars will topple the whole cabinet. Another thing is that the UPS is the most heaviest part of the server and should always be at the bottom due to the weight of the batteries.
Freakin legit episode! I need more like this!
r/cableporn is disappoint
All this crazy equipment and beefy server room and what not, yet you still have the same quality as a youtuber who films from his room, is all this so neccessary?
16:05 .... and a Partridge in a Pear Tree?! Haha! Great video!
Damn Daniel, back at it again with all dows servers.
