In about 1993 I was working at a music store in Minneapolis, MN. and Leo used to come in and borrow an electric guitar and small amp to mess around with or do a backing in a commercial. It was late December and Joe Hunt and I were the only guys upstairs that morning that Leo came to return the guitar. I had spoken to him many times before and he handed the guitar back to me and turned to leave after saying goodbye and thank you. I said hey Leo the guitar was not free you gotta play something for us ! I handed him a 12 string Leo Kottke signature guitar , a Taylor. He proceeded to tune for a second and then put his foot up on the little amp and closed his eyes and started to play. Snow was gently falling outside and Joe and I were just in awe. I will never forget that moment

I saw Leo and Hedges in Northampton, MA awhile back and the next day while trying to play a Martin in a local shop noticed someone was watching me. I turned to see who it was and there was Hedges standing there. I immediately choked, stopped playing and said "Here, you want to play?" He was very polite, said no, told me I was doing just fine and then walked away.
He was a great player and entertainer (played a weird harp/guitar). Leo was GREAT as usual! Thanx.

Playing aside, Leo Kottke has the most affable stage personality of any entertainer I've seen. Modest, witty and an ever-present smile !

I was lucky to see them together at SMU in Dallas. To this day I think it's the best performance I've ever witnessed. Michael, if we meet in the next life, I'm gonna bug the hell outta you to teach me aerial boundaries!

For anyone wondering, "Doodles" was a TV show that never aired. Leo talks about it in the "Home and Away" DVD (from which this footage was taken). Apparently he was hired to write and perform a theme song for the show, but the show only recorded a pilot (IIRC) and wasn't ever made.

I'd say more of a grin because he knows just how awesome the moment is, while it's happening. Existing completely in the moment and recognizing the great things that happen around us every day - now there's something to aspire to. Kottke and Hedges. I'm surprised the world didn't just end because of the sheer volume and density of awesome in the room.

It is too easy for me to forget that in addition to his amazing tapping and tuning, Hedges could simply play some straight guitar. Kottke is one of the four living guitar gods for me. Hedges was the fifth in the pantheon. I still miss him. Thanks for posting this.

Incredibly sad that Hedges passed away. I saw Hedges in a solo concert in Charlotte, NC. That guy is just unbelievably talented. He can play multiple instruments simultaneously all to perfection. He sounds like an entire band by himself.

I saw them in Nashville in 88, and it was a totally awesome evening. Best line of the night though came from Leo, who said, "I told Michael coming in on the plane today that tonight there would be thirteen hundred and fifty-FOUR guitar pickers in Nashville". The other 1352 of us laughed out loud. I miss Michael. Kirkola is right... they had SUCH fun together that night. They were both incredible, but rarely have I seen anyone enjoy making music as much as Michael did that night.

The 3/4 guitar is sometimes called a racinta. They are still popular in Mexico and South America. They were very popular in the USA in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The George Washburn Company made several models.

@sroart that sounds correct. A second trip to Nashville was made to meet Eddie Reeves, co-writer of "Ring" AND the photo shoot with Chet Atkins and Doc Watson where they play together. Both on the DVD Home & Away! Hidden in the menus of that DVD is footage of Leo getting ready for an appearence on "Nashville Now" which he taped that same day. The footage of Leo talking in the car was driving to that photo shoot. the DVD has MUCH more then these badly transferred clips

It is up to us, the lucky ones who know of Hedges and Kottke, to pass it on. I'm introducing as many of my sons' 19 and 16 year old friends as I can to these extraordinary musicians. @TICETOCAR "Doodles" is a Leo Kottke original that he wrote for a pilot TV show. The show didn't end up being made, but the song is available on Leo's 1988 album "Regards from Chuck Pink." (This video is from the "Home and Away: Revisited" DVD that you can order off Amazon, too. It's one of the extras that was added in the DVD release.)

@themachinist1000 "Doodles" was the title of a TV show pilot. Leo was asked to write the theme for the show. (Technically the song is "Theme from Doodles.") The show itself never ended up being made, but this tune is recorded on Leo's "Regads from Chuck Pink" album.

This is from the commercially made video era Leo Kottke - Home and Away but this piece is not featured on the video. It must be a rare out-take. Tbhe video is none the less excellent. I've ownede it for years and influenced others to attain it. I have seen Leo play live in Portland many times. The videos here are nice but there is nothing like seeing him up close and live. A living genius of the guitar and a brilliant performer on the live stage. I recommend that you never miss him when live.

The greats are never forgotten. Less talked about yes. but never forgotten. And for a lot of players people like Andy Mckee and Antoine Dufour are what bridge that gap. I am sure tons of new fingerstyle players have or will soon stumble upon the genius that players like Kottke, Hedges, Atkins, and Watson gave us. It's impossible for them not to. But we are now a select breed of music lovers and you have to remember that.As long as music is the way it is stuff like this lives in the shadows =(
