    Interesting to see all you did with the retaining wall. I knew you were right near the water, but I did not know it came to your back door. I can see why you have added the extra reinforcements. Looking forward to seeing what all you will do here.

    Retired engineer/construction supervisor in Samar sounds like a good job title to me would love to see when this project is completed. The one thing I do notice that it takes a very long time to get everything done properly, you have a lot of patience. Good job shipmate.

    The Filipinos never cease to amaze me ,,,,, very hard workers and very ingenious .I relly thought the guy holdin the rebar with his foot while cutting it with a hacksaw was a nice touch.Also being a retired ironworker of 25 years the correct term for the rings ,,,are called bands ,,,,,, not tryin to be a know it all ,,LOL anyway nice vid and a nice project .

      Bands! Okay, I will toss that out to my crew and see how they react. I enjoy throwing common construction terms on them trying to get their noses to bleed. I wrote a funny blog article about "Stipners" that you should read - here is the link: wp.me/s3cz7G-stipners

      Hi my brother is a mechanical engineer in Saudi Arabia for more that 20 yrs. He built many project there but never built our house in Panay. In fact 4 of them are engineers but very sad when they come home gov't has no job for them. If only I can bring them to the US. By the way building a house in Philippines is hard labor, they need more equipments.

    Another great video ,to see how much really goes into a house near water. I would have never known how much was done to that property, from seeing your main video of the house being built. Because at the end of that video you just show the extra lot already done with the septic tank being pointed out. Thanks again.

    No soldier or header course for the block? Let me organize my questions- LOL- 1- did you put sand or mortar inside the block? Or leave hollow? 2- Was that a type of Pozzolan additive for the concrete? How did they mix it in by hand? Or was there a small portable mixer on site? Or did a truck come in? 3- How much does a truck load of concrete cost to be delivered to a work site? Did you ever research that? - Love your aggregate! Good to see they didn't try to sneak river rock by on you! Love seeing good quality concrete work :)

    • @TropicShade
      @TropicShade  8 років тому +1

      I believe soldier work is more related to bricklaying, not block laying. I am currently working on part II of this video which goes more into detail on block construction here. The SAHARA waterproofing mix is simply added to the manually mixed topping compound on the ground. This job is not big enough to warrant a portable mixer, and I doubt that a large concrete truck could make it into the barangay. My brother-in-law is my foreman and knows his materials. I'm learning also. Construction-wise... this is a whole new world for me learning all the different methodologies. Thanks for your questions Joe B!

    love your vids, especially about the construction. I'm financing a short block wall and chain link fence right now near your place there. it's for my Fiance's family to keep the neighbor out and so we can build a small house on the family lot. neighbor is a little annoyed they can't sell the coconuts and sell the water on fiance's property anymore. they wanted a gate so they could come in whenever they wanted...yikes. Her uncle and "cousins" are building it. I have to laugh because I'm known as the rich American now in Malajog....I'm eating alot of hotdogs and rice to afford it but it helps my family there. good fences and all that. I wondered about the brownouts there since the quake. Do you have a generator there?

    If there is one thing all of us expats love to watch, it's a building and/or renovation project. Especially nice when it is narrated by someone who knows what he's talking about. : ) Is your main house lot as well-protected from the sea? Considering how well engineered the lot is, $3k for improvements so far is absurdly cheap in my opinion - only in the Philippines!

    • @TropicShade
      @TropicShade  8 років тому

      Our main lot's retaining wall was not built to this standard ( I wasn't here when it was built). After about 7 years though, you could see that the wall was beginning to lean outward. Now that it is developed on both sides, I have no worries about the original wall's integrity.

    Hi,I'm curious do you have a handle on how much you spent on the plot walls as I have built a house with a decent sized plot and I was quoted a huge sum to do the lot wall. I was just curious how much you spent on the wall in total and the length of the wall and how high it is. One other question we had also looked a having a bamboo fence but the supplier told us that this is not the correct time of the year to put them in its better late December of early Jan or the bamboo will go powdery in the middle faster. Did you hear about this and if so what did you do to get around the problem. Cheers

    • @TropicShade
      @TropicShade  7 років тому

      If you are inquiring about our retaining wall, it is approximately 1.5 meters in height, and two sections, each about 10 meters in length. With dead-men installed and (six) deep footings, our cost was about P60k. The fill dirt was an additional P28k. So all in all, before construction at grade level began, our cost was approximately $1,900USD. As far as the bamboo fence goes, bamboo in the weather will last about 1 year (no varnish or paint) before it needs replacing. It really doesn't matter what time of year you install, as long as it is green. Then again, might be a regional difference due to rainfall amounts.

    • @TheEnimabandit
      @TheEnimabandit 7 років тому

      Thanks for the Feedback Sir, the wall I need is going to be considerably longer as the plot is about 80 to 90 meters long and 40 meters wide so total of 260 meters long and about the same height say about 6 to 7 feet high and I was looking at about 1 million. Thanks for the reply sir really appreciate it ! Andrew

    • @TropicShade
      @TropicShade  7 років тому

      Make sure your contactor (or workers) understand the concept of installing a "Dead Man." If you are going over one meter in height, I highly recommend them to keep your wall from pushing outward. You can Google "dead man for retaining walls" to get info.

    one question, why do they not lay the block like they do in america, would look much neater?

    • @TropicShade
      @TropicShade  8 років тому

      They do if they use the same type blocks, mostly in some commercial applications. But generally, it is methodology with these hollow blocks. The blocks you see used in most construction are designed simply as forms for concrete and rebar with an added exterior 1" troweled coat of concrete on both surfaces. I will show you the real toughness of this hollow block in my next video! Stay tuned.

      I just replied to an earlier question that we have spent about $2,800 in total for the work so far. That does not include the price of the lot.

      Retired in Samar wow yah that is amazing also what are prices for a nice size lot and to build a not as big as your house but the same quality of material? a ball figure would be nice. thanks again

    • @TropicShade
      @TropicShade  8 років тому

      Prices for land can vary in the extremes. I've seen rural properties go from P900 per meter for rice fields and P6,000 per meter for small city lots. Location, location, location! Building costs for a house can also vary, depending on the type of structure (wood or concrete), and amenities. Our property cost about $400 per sq/meter to build, and includes the perimeter wall, gates, carport, patio, garden and walkway, and all inside appliances.

      well im sure you will make that lot look nice. Also i was wondering about drainage, seams there is a lot of sea water there. Whats the fix for that, just build a wall?

    Nice....at least you enjoy your stay in Samar with your wife....there's a video I saw and watched for curiosity sake, the Idating advice I think, some comments there tell badly of Filipinas having bf's or husbands foreigners, saying Filipinas are that bad looking for some old, guy, rich who can give them a house, money, supporting even their families, green cards, etc...after spending all the money of the foreigner left, taking everything from the guy, having Filipino bf's and all that...one thing I said, not all Filipina girls are like that bad...I asked it all depends where they meet the Filipinas., in the bars , etc...young, dark skinned girls...thinking and saying Filipinas girls are all like that...the reason why I watch your videos , I enjoy watching your videos, your everyday life in Samar, with your wife...happy you and happy with your family out there....your funny too, how you edit your videos or sometimes unedited....not saying any bad thing on Filipinas

      Pat, there are bad people the world over, and those guys who have nothing good to say about filipinos and or filipino culture, well... they probably don't have much good to say about anything!

    Hi there! What is happening to your house while you are in Guam? Do you have a caretaker looking after it? We hope you are well there -- wherever you are! :-)

      Our home is being maintained by the sister in law and her husband, the same BIL that helped build the home. We are getting settled a little more each day in Guam and soon will be in the commuting mode.

    My job In sales and marketing , media , allowed me to meet nice people in the business.. Politicians, too...the reason why I know some people in the government, businessmen, presidents of companies, everybody, even janitors of offices I go to, hahhaha...I love my job, tho, most of the time, I get into trouble because I am so honest with what I say....hahhaha, I am so straightforward a person.. If I don't like somebody, it shows...if he or she is my favorite, it can be seen...am just lucky enough to have friends who are nice...I just don't talk to anyone, I don't want to argue , hahhaha, that's why sometimes my comments in some videos , some don't understand what I mean and I look bad...even I Twitter, so, most of the time, even if I want to comment, I don't ..to avoid trouble...

      Do you work for the Dept of Tourism?

    • @patmendoza8401
      @patmendoza8401 8 років тому

      +Retired in Samar nope, I don't work for Dept of Tourism...I am in advertising sales and marketing, media...tv, radio and print.... I do understand tv production, movie production....I do produce concerts too if I have a good material or talent...and if I have the budget for the show...I produce for tv before, Got two programs I was busy with, then, I market my own tv program , at the same time, I work for a local tv channel, radio network as marketing manager....right now, am doing it slow, not too much as before... I work on my own time... I am interested in one tv reality show in America , they tape the shows on beaches around there, in Thailand, Mexico, ...I know somebody from that tv production, and I gave him my idea of having the shoots here in the Philippines. Accidentally , I was just looking for some videos at you tube, then, I took notice of all your videos and your other friends...it would boost our tourism industry , if ever shoots are here
