For me a strong case in Frieren being among the top 3 anime of all time (yes already) can be found in the simple scenes. In the scene where Sein buys fern's birthday gift most anime would choose to just show them drawn facing one another and talking, with some motion in the background. But the fact that this studio drew him choosing several purses, before settling on one, then taking it to the attendant to wrap it shows such incredible love for the series. It's such a small thing, but the cost to animate all of that is not small. Thats love. They never short the audience no matter how insignificant the details may be. Thats pretty incredible. (sorry for the paragraph, I'm high so I'm just vibing)
One of my favorite things about the series is those shots of sudden 'budget' that go into movement, body language, and emotion. It's subtle but very apparent, isn't it? And the ring for Frieren... The closed lotus, a love that won't blossom... The clocktower between them, the tolling of the bells-*time*, the thing that stands between them... The gentle pace that nevertheless moves forward. Fern and Stark developing little by little, organic and so sweet. Genuinely adore this show and so happy to see you continuing to enjoy it, too!
Fern showed a ton of growth in this episode. And I mean aside from Sein telling her to actually communicate with Stark. She went from wanting to move along and not stay in one place for too long looking for something that held no personal meaning for her (The Blue Moon flower in episode 2), to basically telling Frieren "hey we are going to STAY here until we find that ring for you. I will not hear any arguments." Because Fern knows the significance behind it, because both of what Sein said the design means, and because I'm pretty sure at least she's picked up that Himmel had those extreme feelings for Frieren. Fern may be hard to read, but at least she's human, which means we can read her easier than we can an Elf. I'm sure she's not as air-headed as Frieren when it comes to understanding feelings of love, though it is a close call!
Yes, what is so interesting is the "slow burn" romance which the two do not even understand. All three, Frieren, Fern, and Stark are orphans having lost their entire families, friends, and even their entire village. Frieren was raised by Flamme, Fern by Heiter, and Stark by Eisen. There is no romance in any of this group, so Fern and Stark have no role models for what is going on between them and they are certainly not going to learn that from Frieren. This episode underlines, Sein is the only adult with three children. Fern knows more about the ring, than Frieren does.
Oh I didn't know that but his tough body (jumping head first into the ground leaving a little crater and being completely unwounded) is not a common dwarf trait right?
@@wamaschawama5178 dwarves are built very strong and durable. In dnd you get +2 bonus to you constitution score if you are a dwarf. So that maybe a sign that Eisen was very tanky. In dragon age origins they tried to explain why they were immune to poison. They mined a highly radioactive material called lyrium which was used for various magic purposes. And prolonged exposure to that kind of stuff kind made them immune to alot of other hazardous material.
@@ChillySummerMist that's really cool. Thanks you. Now I wanna check out this game. I hope we will see more dwarfs in Frieren one day, maybe with a new sidequest or my personal wish: an arc covering the mythical era where the world of Frieren was much different from now.
Priests in Frieren's world do what one would hope that all priests would do, which is heal people, and solve interpersonal problems. Where are the real world priests who heal inner wounds, and treat interpersonal injuries? Heiter and Sein may be corrupt, but they know how to help others, and their advice is sound and well founded. And there is no Dogma involved, just a real concern for real people with real injury!
*Spoiler* Frieren are himmel first and last love interest... after watch this eps and soon eps (spoiler) then watch again eps 1 you will know why himmel still single and this make you teary 🥲😭

Anime like frieren, re zero, opm season 1, mushoku tensei season 1 are the passionate project. Yes, you can see the love they put to make this art.

Another thing about lotus flowers is that they don't bloom just once, which between Frieren and Himmel it could be interpreted in many ways!
Wow thank you for pointing that out. The clocktower between them and the bells make an already beautiful scene even more beautiful!!
The scene with Frieren and Heiter chatting on the porch is one of my favorites. There really isn't a need to explain why. It is wonderful.
3:20 She asked because they wanted to make it to the next town, but Fern didn't have enough mana to fly that far so they flew back to village instead.

I don't care how often it's been said: This is why he's HIMmel.
Btw Eisen was healthy after so many poisonous arrows is because in most fictional settings dwarves are immune / resistant to poison.
he got a pretty good buzz from it though judging by his pupils
