One doesn’t buy a e39 today for its resale value. It’s a keep forever or drive to the ground type of car at this point.

One thing that I wish people would emphasize when talking about the E39s is how amazing the structure feels. The doors feel so solid, they're super well isolated from road/wind noise, and they just ride so well while still handling well. It's hard to replicate that feeling of "perceived" solidity on modern cars because they've gotten so much larger so they have to use lighter materials. Yes, a current 5 series will perform better in crash tests than an E39, but they don't feel as solid!

    • @TheMarkyMarx
      @TheMarkyMarx 2 роки тому +12

100% agree. The e39 is still sexy, but so, so solid and a super smooth ride. I have driven over 350,000 miles in this model over the past 25 years and I still have a smile on my face when I get out after a drive and I still glance back as I walk away. True love.

Nathan you have to try a 530d or a later 535d, as much as I like the na straight 6 the torque of that diesel is adicting. As for running in cold temperature mine starts every winter at -20 no issues as long as glow plug and module is good, overall I think on e39 and e46 after 2001 the diesel were much solid than petrol engines, I still see them here in Uk at auction with more than 400000 miles and still going.

I've owned a US spec version whilst living down in good old AZ and two European versions. to be honest not a lot of difference, but I don't push the cars to the max !!!!! The E39 video's on this channel is like an extension of the owners manual. Really great stuff.

    Great video!
All of the interiors except one of seven BMW’s were grey! Love the grey interiors!!!
Totally agree part are not that expensive as long as you can stay away from the Chinese knock off junk! Also your local wracking yard is and can be a gold mine for hard to find parts! In my area of Central Texas most E39 in the yards are under 100,000 miles. So parts can be had fairly easily, be side places like FCP Euro type places! It seems if you take the time and have the time you can find parts for the E39 that are more than reasonable along with many companies that service ecm abs and pixels ribbon in the cluster and stock radio!
I have bought all the different software suits and adaptors for the E,F,&G series of BMW’s to Diagnose the different systems, with that and my tool setup I can make my two E39 last for years!
    Thank s again Nathan!

Very nice you mention Europe models, I own a 520d M47 for 14years and in 14 years of ownership left me on the side of the road 3 times only 1-cracked thermostat housing, 2-fuel pump in the tank, 3-manual 5speed gearbox stuck in 1st gear. all these problems were fairly easy fixed... Where I live in winter sometimes we have -25C and started every time as long as you have good battery, good plugs and the right diesel. The main problem in Europe is rust and poor maintenance - poor after market parts.
There are some weak spots, jack points rockers rear fenders arch, gas cap housing, lower doors panel, boot lighting holes, and trunk opener barrel area. Every engine type have some weak points but on the chassis seems to be those common problems. Perhaps a part 2 will be helpful to fully cover common problems and fixes on every e39 engine and body. I suspect that some engines have common problems and similar fixes like swirl flaps or fan coupling thing and so on, on the body part we have twisted electrical front seats, rear right door vapor barrier, headlights broken adjusters, foggy low beam projectors, cup holders things like this it will be very nice to have all information in one place

The M57 engined 530D is excellent.
I have two facelift 530D Tourings, one manual the other auto they were both made March/April 2001. Both have a little more tha 165,000 miles on them. Great motorway cruisers and tow cars, all that torque and the self-levelling rear suspension.
Economical to run, easy to work on for a home mechanic, parts availability (genuine BMW and quality third party) is excellent.
I had the infamous swirl flaps removed from the auto (not fitted to the manuals).
Only major problems have been a turbo blew on the manual (probably because it hadn't been run for 12 months or more before I bought it), a flange broke off on the s/steel exhaust downpipe (poor manufacture broke at the original weld, got it rewelded locally). the rear wash/wipe stopped working and the wiring harness in the right hand tailgate hinge (poor design/manufacture common fault).
My 1993 E34 520i Touring has done 250,000 miles and I expect my E39s will do at least as many.

Hey, thanks for the video! I think except for your comments on the colors you are spot on. One thing I want to mention to everyone who either has a E39 or wants to get one: do yourself a favor and add some "hydraulic lifter cleaning fluid" to your fresh engine oil first thing, it eliminates a lot of fault codes which you would never associate with it. Many people get exhausted by the myriad of fault codes generated by the M54 engines, and don't realize that its old engine management software often just does not identify the correct codes, and instead suggests fixing all kinds of stuff without ever eliminating the root cause. Try this first and thank me later!
My car (M54B22) now has 425,000 km and runs as smooth as ever, on LPG btw. I add hydraulic lifter cleaning fluid at every oil change, its like Vitamins for the M54s.

Yeah! This Chanel hates V8 but there awesome, e39 to e38 are special cars, the ride is exceptionally, the solid chassis that feels amazing, it’s not all about money and resale it’s about the driving experience, if you won’t resale go buy a tin can civic that will dull your senses just to save a few bucks, and add that you didn’t drive or experience a e39 or e38 on your regret list forever.
And actually German classic and modern classics are skyrocketing in price right now, collectors are finally figuring it out that a E39 540i handles better and is faster than there old school mustang and camaro’s.

Nathan bloody hates anything lmao. I think outside of Europe, German cars are generally more expensive to keep. Here in the UK, getting timing chain jobs done is not even a concern anymore, so many people specialize in the job for a lot less than you think. My 540i had its chain and guides done a couple years ago, its on 150k atm and can't fault its reliability.

I'm currently looking at an E39 535i manual with 100k miles on the clock. Non vanos of course. It's had new seals and rocker cover from the main dealer. It's apparently had new belts and pulleys etc too but I'll have to check that when I see it.
FYI people are getting rid of diesels in Europe/UK. Governments are making them prohibitively expensive to own, which is a good thing as they're filthy, especially the older engines. Prices for desirable cars are going through the roof. Fast BMW's and Hondas for example are becoming hard to find for reasonable money. There's been a 5-10k increase in asking price in the last year. E39 M5 and E46 M3 have doubled in value.

BMW E39 530d with R6 M57 engine is the best car ever, same like Mercedes OM606 3.0 R6. Those are Germans 2JZ's. Hold up to 1 Millon kilometres+, can handle much power and the fuel consumption is ridiculously low. Such a pity that they are right now pretty expensive especially when you look for:
M57 + manual gearbox + sedan + Mpaket + low milage (or high milage but renovated / restored) firstly they can go over 10K easly and secondly they are very rare to even find.

I like the new intro, but it's a bit long. Maybe break up the montage throughout the video with just 2-4 clips for the intro. When talking about the motor options, show a panning shot of the motor. When talking about the interior options, have a couple shots of the interior. Use the pics and clips to illustrate your talking points. I'd imagine this would help the people that are just here for a quick info dump before buying a junker. Just a thought. I'm not a youtuber, I'm just a viewer, but as a viewer, that's what I'd want to see in a video. Keep up the awesome content!
