i live in new zealand...i have just bought a 1996 BMW 5 series for only $4000!!! it only has travelled 42 000km since new...the car is basically brand new still and in excellent condition. I cannot believe how lucky i am to own such brand new car for very little price :)
Just don't use it and you'll be fine, once you start driving it all hell will break loose and it will nickel and dime you to an early grave, trust me they are endless money pits, my customer bought a 530i for 400 us dollars he thought it was the deal of the century, it's been sitting in my driveway for three months and I'm still finding things wrong with it, I warned him not to buy it, he's in over 3,000 now and climbing and the car still isn't right.
murry001 I have a 535i also brilliant car but in the 6 months I've had it I've replaced the water pump the ccv valve the light control module, also the front lower arms go very easily on these cars causing slight wobble when braking
thanks Mick. I have that slight wobble when braking, but otherwise it's going very well. What symptoms does the CCV valve give when it's malfunctioning?
murry001 not sure if you can see the video on my profile but it's smoke on start up erratic idle cutting out and the codes p0174 come up bmw want 1500 to change ccv but I just about managed to change the diaphragm at the rear of the manifold I have got rid of 2 e39s previously but keep going back to them because no other car matches them in my opinion
The main problem, at least in the earlier petrol powered 6 cylinder models, was that the cylinders were lined with nikosil, which reacts badly with the sulphur in petrol. My 1998 car needed a replacement engine after only 60,000 miles. I guess most should have been fixed by now but it is worth checking that any restorative work has been completed.
I love my 98 528i. So far, I've had to make minor repairs but nothing major has occurred yet *knock on wood* and hopefully does not happen anytime soon because I am in love with this car! It's my first car and I got a great deal on it for $1000. The mileage is a little up there at 165K but the last owner seemed to have take good care of her so this mileage shouldn't matter as much.
I own a 2002 530dA Touring. I think you didn't mention a 3.0d engine which was used on these models after 2000. 142Kw (192Hp) with 410Nm. I got this baby last year for 2300 euros with 290k km on the clock( could not be original considering the age of the car). But still even today the car is amazingly agile. Enough power on the wheels for every driving style. And the fuel ecoomy is not too bad too. About 8,3 litres per 100Km average: 6,5-7L on highway: and then there is city:D Depending on the weight of your foot. 9-13L(yes i'm from europe, sorry guys, can't tell how many miles per gallon :D ). To everyone who is consideridering in buying one of these, i would say go ahead. It's a really great wehicle even when it's in average condition. P.s. the M57 engines are reliable even after 1Mil km.
Rabbit Colony how bullet proof are they really? How much kms do you have and how much $ have you spent on maintenance? Any problems plagued your car ever?

If you do insist on getting one in spite of being advised not to as I advised a customer of mine, be prepared for an adventure of epic proportions. Just note that unless the oil was changed religiously be prepared to replace every engine gasket, the oil pan is not for your average DIYer, it involves raising the engine and lowering the subframe, then there's the oil filter housing gasket and you're going to want to replace the vamos hose while your at it, next come the valve cover gasket, on the 2003 530i I'm working on I've done all that and there's still oil leaking from somewhere, I've done the water pump, thermostat because the sensor in the housing was throwing a p01620 code,, every coolant hose I replaced, the power steering hoses as well as the transmission collar lines are leaking, they're next on the list an hid headlight ballast, vacuum hoses, they are prone to vacuum leaks so all the pcv and related hoses in the system and just when you think you're done something else will go wrong, don't even think about buying one of these if you're going to have to pay a mechanic to work on it again unless you have money to burn, and be mindful of the fact that it requires 91 octane,, the one I'm working on has only 93,000 miles on it and to be fair was not kept up with, good luck and also be sure to replace the DISA valve.
why is 2.5 (525d) facelift diesel engine not included in the diesel section, its arguably best engine simply because of great balance between power, quality and fuel consumption
And the maker of the video seems not to know the fact, that the m57D25 is the same engine as M57D29, only the turbocharger, engine's lenght of stroke and the ecu is on different programme.
haha, I own that car but I've encountered various electrical issues in the past days. I'm really thinking about getting another 525d and use the remains of my old one for spare parts instead of getting a new bimmer. Just because there are no more 6 cylinder in their budget segment....

My 1999 523i was a beautiful car, but reliability.... Everything electrical and electronic failed at one time or another, the front suspension gave up the ghost, the stupid damn boot lid lock broke - not once but twice. None of this was cheap to replace either - second mortgage on the house stuff. After that sad experience and the poor electrical reliability experienced on the VW Jetta I owned before the E39, I vowed I would never own a German car again. Japanese cars may not have the cachet the best European makes have, but they do get you there and back - if reasonably well looked after, they'll do it every time, too.
German cars are very reliable if the previous owners took good care of the car. If the car was neglected however, it will bring you nothing but headaches. Japanese cars can breakdown too but when they breakdown, they're much cheaper to fix than a German car of course.
Great review. However, I currently found out a BMW 528i E39 from September 2001. Is this correct? I only heard that 525i and 530i were offered and that the 528i was removed after the facelift.
the 528i was available until the end of the year 2000, so basically in before facelift versions, however in the US you could maybe buy even a 2001 model with this engine, but if you want to be sure then check the VIN number of that car - just put the last 7 digits of the BMW VIN number here bimmer.work/
Sorry to ask a dumb question but I just bought my first car 98 BMW 528i, I was wondering are all the series 5 listed in this video title compatible with each other? As in parts wise? Mine needs a few and I was see if the junk has anything to offer.
Yep, TU Motors came out in 98', Facelift in 00'. Always warm the Motor up carefully, its extremly sensitive to heat while cold. Also, if you have a TU-Motor, look out for your Double-Vanos.
-it really depends on if you want or if you are able to work on your car, because you can buy most of the parts for a good price, but the price of the labour on the V8 engines is higher than on the 6 cylinder engines -the V8 engines also operate at higher engine temperature than the 6 cylinders, so you can expect more wear and tear on the plastic components and on the gaskets also the automatic tranmsission - if the previous owner never changed the oil in it then it can be worn waiting for expensive repairs - but this also depends on the mileage all in all it is an older car so the rubber parts like bushings will be worn, leaks can obviously occur as well, but the most reasonable / reliable choice in the E39 is the 6 cylinder petrol engine - and it doesn't really matter which one
the engine is reliable, but you can expect various leaks, check for rust and check the gearbox-it should change gears smoothly without strange noises or hesitation these cars can do easily 400 000 km / 500 000 km (250 000 mi - 310 000 mi) but only with the proper maintenance of course
I have a BMW 540i 2003 model with a v8 engine, The car makes an aeroplane sound when im driving the gear also appears not to be changing. I ve changed the gear box, but im still having the same issue
yes, the 528 is a more reasonable / more reliable choice, the 535i does have a little higher maintance costs mainly if it's the newer engine version with vanos - made after 1998, but if you can fix the things on the car yourself then you can choose the V8 too since most of the spare parts are not very expensive, if you don't want to fix the it yourself then be preapred to pay more money for the labour if you choose the V8
I would not recommend it, because first of all it's not very powerful compared to the other diesel engines, but if you don't need extra power then this is not an issue, however there are cases of cracked cylinder head - mainly if the previous owner treated the car badly so, all in all it really is better to choose the newer 525d with 163 hp or the well known 530d
You can't expect to have a car that is 20 years old and not having anything to be replaced on it. There are so many parts and materials, they just get old like everything else in nature. Especially rubber and plastic - even the best ones deteriorate and lose their quality with time.
Any car has problems. An average car has over 30K parts so something is bound to break every once in a while! Older cars like the E39 series are likely to have issues due to their age. This of course, depends on who owned the car last and how well they maintained the vehicle.
Economy consumption not bad and smooth driving experience, but sometimes you will feel that engine is small on such a TANK! I prefer 530i and 530d engines (I have both of them :))
I haven't really figured it out yet but it seems like there a shortage somewhere that causes my window lifters, central locking system, wipers and various lights to not work properly. Already checked all the fuses and now I'm looking for some kind of a "melting protection" somewhere near the battery that might cause these issues since this only happens if it's like really warm outside. As long as temperatures remain below 25 °C everything works just fine. Mine has about 250k kilometers (about 155k miles) and just looking at the motor, these things are kinda indestructable. I've seen this model do over 400k kilometers with just the change of oil and almost no further service (motorwise) so I really don't want to get rid of it anytime soon. Only problem I had so far was a failing fuel relay pump right below the drivers seat. Easy to switch and relatively cheap, got mine for around 90 bucks and installed it in like 30 minutes. It's a solid car, fun to drive and if I get to solve my electrical problems I plan on doing at least another 100k kilometers with it. It's a real 6-cylinder, BMW doesn't make them like this anymore and I'd rather go on a bicycle than in one of those turbocharged shitmotors they build nowadays :P
Oh and there's another issue the former owner had; there was oil leaking out the steering box/gear. Had that fixed but it's a shit ton of work getting that piece of shit out and then back in. Since then my steering wheel isn't exactly positioned straight but the car's still going a straight line so fuck that :P
The E39 was the last of the "user friendly" 5 series.; i.e. owner oil changes, tune-ups and basic maintainence. Any 3 or 5 series after 2003 should be left to competent BMW technicians as they are too complex for us shade tree gearheads. My 1995 E34 525i was probably the finest car I'll ever own although I have confidence in my 1999 540i sport with the 6-speed manual Getrag gearbox and 49k miles on the clock. - No, I won't sell it.

different car review o
So if I buy a 4.4 without the vanos I should be good?
I own a 98’ 523i with almost 300.000 miles on it. Original engine and tranny. Maintain and treat these cars well and then run forever.
Do you still have your 523i?
i live in new zealand...i have just bought a 1996 BMW 5 series for only $4000!!! it only has travelled 42 000km since new...the car is basically brand new still and in excellent condition. I cannot believe how lucky i am to own such brand new car for very little price :)
You got it for less than 10% of the price as new, about 40.000€ ,you are really lucky, enjoy it a lot :)
Damn lucky
Haha. Now I am going to inspect one and it is only 42000km too :)
But asking price is $9500.
I am willing to pay max 7k
Just don't use it and you'll be fine, once you start driving it all hell will break loose and it will nickel and dime you to an early grave, trust me they are endless money pits, my customer bought a 530i for 400 us dollars he thought it was the deal of the century, it's been sitting in my driveway for three months and I'm still finding things wrong with it, I warned him not to buy it, he's in over 3,000 now and climbing and the car still isn't right.
I have a 2003 525i with 116k miles and it is such a great car. Just maintain them and they will take care of you.
the best powerful and economical engine is M54B30 530i
530 beefier and more torque, i wish i could find one in my area with manual trans... :(
147NITRO nothing beats an e39 v8... Over 60 HP is a lot of difference.
535 is also a good option
M52B28TU
The 530D has more torque and similar power and drinks waaaay less, here where i live (Portugal) petrol is a lot more expensive than Diesel.
The only bimmer thats design to last. Mr nathan should see this video😁😁😁
thank you! i just bought a 535i e39 and this really helps me for what to look out for. :)

thanks! just put an exhaust on mine too, sounds amazing!!
murry001 i just deleted the back box/rear muffler on mine with a piece of pipe it's just a shame mine isn't manual

I got a 2003 530i. The thing is practically bulletproof.
Rabbit Colony how bullet proof are they really? How much kms do you have and how much $ have you spent on maintenance? Any problems plagued your car ever?
Rabbit Colony my 530i is awesome no big money to run it a 5 speed road runner an classiy
Plant Seed whatever happened with your 530? I’m looking at one now. 160k miles, 5 speed manual.
wonder
This was kinda helpful I’m buying the e39 540i 4.4L v8 and it helped look for certain things
I loved my ex cop car 530d but for me it’s e34 all the way,I’ll never sell mine plus I can fix any issues myself 👍🏻🇬🇧
The build quality on new ones is amazing too idk what you're smoking.
old ones better... drive one
The brand new BMW’s are a bit more reliable, and old BMW’s endure pain. They never break. Unless if you have something like 1999 750

what of the 523i
thanks, very informative, keep them coming! :)
You should have referred the 525d manual that had no swirl flaps (only autos)
Going to see one tomorrow!
wait.. the manual 525d doesn't have swirl flaps? I just bought one and i am so fucking happy about this fact !!!!!!

bobagopaaa it’s the bottom of the range engine
I had 530da with the GM gearbox, done like 450km and no overhaul. But on E53 I had the same gearbox, second overhaul in 400tkm. Much heavier car.

Because i have a e39 523i and my engine is 18years old with no problems

I just bought a 528i toruing automatic with 35k miles (swedish miles) on the meter, whole car plus a complete pair of style 32 rims cost me 300$
Hi, fellow Swede here, is your 528i still holding up now, one year later? :)
I'm thinkig to make my 530d from automatic to manual transmission :)
Tarik S go for it bro
Dont. Unless you can re program the dash, ECU, TCU, etc. on your own.
2.5L Diesel engine with 120kw(161hp) is a good engine as well.
multiestonian all engines are good in this car
If it is TD, but TDS is terrible
Is a 98 540i with 117k bad ? Only thing wrong is speed sensor and crankshaft sensor needs to be replaced ?
This highly vague information to such an extent that I find this virtually useless towards being useful towards making a purchase decision.
i think the best diesel e39 is 525tds i have that engine and its in really good shape after 500k
😯
Considering to buy an e39 facelift 528i or 530i or an e46 328i or 330ci . Any tips?
the none vanos v8 is 235 and vanos is 245 same with the 4.4 v8 non vanos is 285 and with vanos is 295
Is the automatic by a diesel car really that bad?
Very helpfull video.
Japanese cars may not have the cachet the best European makes have, but they do get you there and back - if reasonably well looked after, they'll do it every time, too.
promerops I agree totally
With warranty no problems
Out side warranty keep a 1000 euro car float .
German cars are very reliable if the previous owners took good care of the car. If the car was neglected however, it will bring you nothing but headaches. Japanese cars can breakdown too but when they breakdown, they're much cheaper to fix than a German car of course.
I planning to buy my 3rd 530d e39, but in manual like you advice, I will go for the "i" version I think
Just a tip:
before facelift - *pre-facelift*
after facelift - *facelift.*
Patrick S some parts after the September of 1998 are different so just be aware. amazing cars.
Yep, TU Motors came out in 98', Facelift in 00'. Always warm the Motor up carefully, its extremly sensitive to heat while cold. Also, if you have a TU-Motor, look out for your Double-Vanos.
Hi frrrrrriends!! Lol congrats, bro! Nice car!
Hi im looking at a 2002 bmw 540i with automatic transmission are they reliable? Or should i stay away from it? Thx
-it really depends on if you want or if you are able to work on your car, because you can buy most of the parts for a good price, but the price of the labour on the V8 engines is higher than on the 6 cylinder engines
-the V8 engines also operate at higher engine temperature than the 6 cylinders, so you can expect more wear and tear on the plastic components and on the gaskets
also the automatic tranmsission - if the previous owner never changed the oil in it then it can be worn waiting for expensive repairs - but this also depends on the mileage
all in all it is an older car so the rubber parts like bushings will be worn, leaks can obviously occur as well, but the most reasonable / reliable choice in the E39 is the 6 cylinder petrol engine - and it doesn't really matter which one
whats your opinion on the 2003 BMW 5-Series 525iTA station wagon?..love your videos
the engine is reliable, but you can expect various leaks, check for rust and check the gearbox-it should change gears smoothly without strange noises or hesitation
these cars can do easily 400 000 km / 500 000 km (250 000 mi - 310 000 mi) but only with the proper maintenance of course
Hello guys , what u can tell me about 1996 528 i . Automatic .
I never heard or seen the 3.5l v8. Was it sold in the us?
i don't know if it was available in the US, but that engine is common in Europe
How much is the price
Can you please make a review for tha Alfa 166 after the 2004 facelift ?
is it somewhere review about diesel engine
God I really like the older BMWs but dread a myriad of problems that might come with them. Also no experience with cars mechanically at all. :p
Valentin Kokorin same...
Currently I drive an e46 330Ci 6speed manual, but also would like to buy an e39 as a daily car 28i or 30i with manual gearbox.
Just tell me which bmw is the best one to buy for reliability
BMW 530 I face lift with m54b30 bulletproof
1985 BMW 535 e28
@@landofcivilization7894 what year
l'm big fan of this model, but feared to buy, I only find with high mileage.... should I be afraid?
there is no need to worry about the high mileage if the car was well maintained, especially the E39 can withstand a lot
Which is the Best Oil for 1998 E39 BMW 528i ?
Shefket Mustafa castrol
3d has also zf gearbox.
Pls what of the e39 523i
How often should the engine oil be changed?
Nathan garage says 6000 km
E39 525 tds is reliable or shit?
Is or front wheel or all wheel?
All old BMW have rear wheel drive as standard
In you're upcoming videos can you also talk about the ///M version to?
Of course, you can expect BMW M models in the future.
name of the fjrst wheels ease?
What about the m54 b22??
I have a BMW 540i 2003 model with a v8 engine, The car makes an aeroplane sound when im driving the gear also appears not to be changing. I ve changed the gear box, but im still having the same issue
if the sound is coming from the back of the car, then it can be the rear differential
it is coming from the engine
ok, then it can be some bearing, maybe wheel bearing or clutch release bearing
The last real BMW!🥲👍🏻
Thank you
Im not sure if i should get a 528 or a 535
The 528 is way cheaper in every way
yes, the 528 is a more reasonable / more reliable choice,
the 535i does have a little higher maintance costs mainly if it's the newer engine version with vanos - made after 1998, but if you can fix the things on the car yourself then you can choose the V8 too since most of the spare parts are not very expensive,
if you don't want to fix the it yourself then be preapred to pay more money for the labour if you choose the V8
What you think of the 525 tds ?
I would not recommend it, because first of all it's not very powerful compared to the other diesel engines, but if you don't need extra power then this is not an issue, however there are cases of cracked cylinder head - mainly if the previous owner treated the car badly
so, all in all it really is better to choose the newer 525d with 163 hp or the well known 530d
si Slovak ?
If these are the best cars ever made why do they have so many problems?
Scorp308 because they are over 15 years old. It's not a perfect car
every car have some problems
You can't expect to have a car that is 20 years old and not having anything to be replaced on it. There are so many parts and materials, they just get old like everything else in nature. Especially rubber and plastic - even the best ones deteriorate and lose their quality with time.
Any car has problems. An average car has over 30K parts so something is bound to break every once in a while! Older cars like the E39 series are likely to have issues due to their age. This of course, depends on who owned the car last and how well they maintained the vehicle.
Im plannong on buying a 520i is there any good?
Economy consumption not bad and smooth driving experience, but sometimes you will feel that engine is small on such a TANK! I prefer 530i and 530d engines (I have both of them :))
@@TheultimateDIYmachine should i buy 5series 1997 520i or 3series 1997 318is
can you do e53 review
yes I did ! It's here: ua-cam.com/video/TjMch-Wur48/v-deo.html
Could you do a w140 mercedes-benz or w220
What about 525tds and m51 engine?
LEVICE reprezent.
love my 525d e39 but it's starting to give me a lot of headaches in the last few weeks.
like what? I just bought a used BMW e39 525D and I want to know what to look out for? It has 130 000 miles on it
I haven't really figured it out yet but it seems like there a shortage somewhere that causes my window lifters, central locking system, wipers and various lights to not work properly.
The 528i is a problematic engine! It has a lot of problems with the ECU
so which one is best for you guys ?
this model is a nightmare to own
Bmw M3 e46 is it f...k
Ok, UA-cam, I fucking watched the video, now leave me fucking alone.
A car from the movie, sorry to write bu looks like a wreck.
e39 is the best 5ser bimmer ever made 530i M tech is the best from all never seen 535 E39 not in USA E60 535 turbo N55 engine
BMW manual car? I don't think the BMW and manual are a good match as it hasn't got the smoothness of the auto which wafts along sublimely
& i530 & ...
there is no 535 8 cylinder. only the 540 has an 8 cylinder engine.
yes there is a 535i V8 engine........
Not in the United States....
"there is no 535 8 cylinder." .. So clearly you were unaware of the fact that there actually is a 535i V8, typical close minded 'murican.
DriftingXBumperX he's not American, probably an illegal Mexican
jesus calm down jesus, there is a 535 V8
