- An old sawmill once moved lumber out of the mountains at Thunderhead Gap. Wood is still the focus, but now the operation known as the Thunderhead is the wildest ride in the woods! Carefully situated between two mountains, this massive wooden coaster stands tall among the mighty trees and takes advantage of the area's rough and tumble terrain to create a daring ride featuring a 100-foot drop and a top speed of 55 mph. Ride POV footage provided by Dollywood (filming is not permitted on this ride).

This one is so underrated at Dollywood and in general. Rode it today and it was fantastic. I’ve been on a lot of Woodies lately and this one blew most of them out of the water 🙌

The layout looks great! The big question for any woodie is how rough is it?
A large section of the track was reworked during the off-season. It's the best it's been. Due to the improvements, it's in the discussion for the best coaster at Dollywood.
It’s smoother than Rampage in Alabama, another Awesome wooden coaster. Love these banked turns and the fly through. First time ever on this, we rode in the back and my dear daughter of nine was almost in shock afterwards for 15 minutes. The ride just never let up. (I think it’s tamer now?) Now, she rides Everything and wears me out! Great channel!
Rode it today and it’s incredible and so smooth. Top notch woodie here

I have ridden Thunderhead several times. The first ride it was very smooth. After that, very rough. Don't think I'll ride it again unless the track gets overhauled and smooth again.
That seems to be the downside of wooden coasters, they are not as smooth!
@@AdventureIsOutThere You are correct. It's all due to the wood. As it expands and contracts when it gets wet and the dries out, it causes warpage which causes the roughness of the ride.
They just overhauled it last winter, this past year (2023) it was super smooth!

No, this was provided directly to us from Dollywood which is where they most likely got it as Dollywood does not allow filming on their rides.
I can assure, as someone who has ridden the ride no less than 2 dozens times, this is footage from Thunderhead.
Worst rollercoaster I've ever road. So rough, too many sharp turns, no big hills.
That is the one complaint about this wooden roller coaster (it can be bumpy).
