    Music to my hater ears. Those movies are by and large total nonsense and I’m convinced people “like it” as a bit.

      @@BurnAfterWatching_ The show isn't as weird as the movie. The stranger parts are often very much out-balanced by the more standardised plot throughout, even the strangest bits are someone easy to follow, although it would be a bit jarring for you seeing what you've shown to dislike. It's a brilliant show and I think it would be very much worth your time. Shame that you haven't seen it before seeing the film, as a lot of the ideas in the film have very likely been lost on you as they were introduced clearly in the show.

      Even tho I didn’t like some of his films, most of them were 3/5 which I consider a good ratings. I simply felt like some of those stories or character were not explored to their full potential (and I’m very much more of a characters driven film guy). I will for sure check out the TV show, even tho I didn’t love most of Lynch’s film, Mulholland drive alone was so great, I will revisit for sure. Twins peaks main story line was super interesting and I was into it by part.

      @@BurnAfterWatching_ the twin peaks show is probably him doing characters at his best. It being a whole show gives him more time to flesh everyone out and everyone in it for the most part has something going on

      I literally WATCHED THE FILMS. Since when films need to come with an instruction booklet. No matters what you watch or in which order from Lynch, people will say you did it wrong… you can like him and disagree with me, I totally see why people would like it, but you have to accept that if i didn’t like some of it, it’s not because I watched it wrong

      @@BurnAfterWatching_ a lot of it makes perfect thematic, plot, or mood sense if you sit with these things for more than a few days though? It's genuinely not a case of "random bullshit" with most of your complaints here, and I'm not saying you have to like the guy but Lynch definitely has a wavelength you have to meet him on. Really one of the worst directors to do a snap reaction to. Heaps of context you're missing here.

      @@maxmccarty3131I agree. Inland empire and lost highway are some of my favourite films but not for being confusing, but for being confusing with a purpose and how everyone has their own way of understanding

    I dont understand how you can say David Lynch movies are non sensical just because you haven't found sense of them yet? The beautiful part of Lynch's movies imo is that you have to build your own sense of whats happening and no one holds your hand through them, and even then, it's not really about whats truly happening but instead how it makes you feel. It's about the journey not the destination (this is coming from an Eraserhead superfan who was butthurt you called it "abstract avant-garde bullshit")

    • @BurnAfterWatching_

      I appreciate the comment, and I’m glad you like it the films. I think it comes down to personal taste at that point, i feel like you leave so much potential on the table when you spend time chasing more abstract concepts over exploring the characters and themes of your story. As. You can see, I gave most of his films a positive score at the end (3 stars or more) and to me it a recognition that I don’t think the films are poorly made (except maybe inland empire 😂) and more that they aren’t my preference. Obviously films shouldn’t aim to just liked and be what people prefer, some of my favourite movies were challenging ones, but I also feels like they were maybe more grounded. Ahah and I totally get the feel vs understand approach, the eraserhead vibes, music, sound design, sets were great, just not a fan of the abstract moments.

    Blue Velvet was a very influential movie and a bit of sensation when it first came out. The problem is that there have been so many derivatives since then, that by the time you finally watch -- it feels like you've seen it before.

    • @BurnAfterWatching_
      @BurnAfterWatching_  7 місяців тому

      Thats fair as well, I do think there’s a way to make a film that remain timeless in a way (the elephant man per example didn’t feel this way, even tho it plays in a pretty established frame) but I do think blue velvet is one I could revisit - but I’m more attracted to lost highway and Mulholland drive

    Reviewing a DL film after one viewing is like reviewing an album after one listen and thinking you know all the songs by heart; you don’t. Patience is your strongest virtue when it comes to David lynch movies, so you can focus more on the emotions you’re feeling from the movie rather than whining about jt not making sense. The most polarizing works of art are usually the most original as well.
    Also watch Twin Peaks, all of your favorite TV shows wouldnt exist without it and it’s a masterpiece

      I totally agree, this video was about ranking them in that context. I’m for sure revisiting Mulholland drive and never close minded to let film grow as I reflect on them. None of this are final verdicts.
      I’ll probably checkout twins peaks this year, not a tv show guy, might take a while to get in the mindset tho

    Now speed read all of James Joyce and rank them by nonsense. Lol .. David Lynch makes films with layers like classical composer builds a symphony. You might get the big crashing intro, but you aren't going to get the subtle sections on the first listen.

    • @BurnAfterWatching_
      @BurnAfterWatching_  7 місяців тому +1

      That’s fair, I can only do a reaction based on the fact that I’ve seen it once, and I’m not close to revisit some of them. I still think that he was able to deliver a deep and layers experience with Mulholland drive on a first watch, but also allow for more interesting details to come out on future watches. So I don’t think it has to be one or the others.

  • @jamescastelli
    @jamescastelli Місяць тому

    It would be interesting to know what you consider great films. Then I could better understand what you don't like about Lynch. He's an artist, a surrealist. He is the opposite of a Hallmark TV movie. I think it would be disappointing for him to work on his own terms so often out of the Hollywood system and his work to NOT be as original as it is. You know, life is strange and can be weird and not make sense, riddles left unsolved. People have nightmares - not horror movie jump scare cliche shit, but bizarre stuff that defies explanation that is disturbing. Why you think that it isn't worth your while for such stories and experiences to be in film makes less sense to me than a Lynch film.
    Anyway, we do agree that Mulholland Drive is his best, though I would put Eraserhead and Straight Story just below it.
