    Never have I watched a David Lynch film and thought: what message is he trying to put across? If anything, that way of looking at a movie is cringe. Why not just jump into it, feel it, sure be a detective too but why the want to see some kind of reflection of reality? Even Inland Empire was enjoyable because of it's mood. I didn't pick up on any "message", still.

    It would be interesting to know what you consider great films. Then I could better understand what you don't like about Lynch. He's an artist, a surrealist. He is the opposite of a Hallmark TV movie. I think it would be disappointing for him to work on his own terms so often out of the Hollywood system and his work to NOT be as original as it is. You know, life is strange and can be weird and not make sense, riddles left unsolved. People have nightmares - not horror movie jump scare cliche shit, but bizarre stuff that defies explanation that is disturbing. Why you think that it isn't worth your while for such stories and experiences to be in film makes less sense to me than a Lynch film. Anyway, we do agree that Mulholland Drive is his best, though I would put Eraserhead and Straight Story just below it.

    Here’s something no one talks about. Early in the film, she (the young detective) hears noises in or around her dark and creepy house and goes outside in the snow to look around. With flashlight in hand she turns around and sees a figure through the window. Tepidly she goes back in to see who it is. All she finds is a large sealed envelope in her office saying do not open immediately, etc. Why the hell is she still not scared af that the intruder may still be there? She assumes he just left the envelope and then left the house? How does she know? She calmly opens the envelope, reads the contents and then we cut to scene with her boss, revealing it to him. That’s some great detective. Ridiculous.

      You cannot genuinely call longlegs a horror masterpiece. It’s full of cheap horror cliches, characters that are as deep as paper plates, and terrible dialogue to the point where I was hearing chuckles in the theatre. Unfortunately when you make a claim like this the burden of proof lands upon you and the argument you’ve made invokes the burden of proof fallacy. So please give us some reasons why longlegs is an alleged horror masterpiece.

      I think then this all comes down to opinions then. Friday the 13th part 4 is a horror masterpiece to me. It's a POS to real world people who enjoy TV drama. But like a lot of these "classic" horror films, it takes some suspension of disbelief, and willingness to stand in plot holes to enjoy many of them. Personally, get out and midsommar didn't hit with me and I wouldn't consider green room a horror film. But for years in our circle, if a horror flick got above a 6.0 on IMDb it was a go.

    Reviewing a DL film after one viewing is like reviewing an album after one listen and thinking you know all the songs by heart; you don’t. Patience is your strongest virtue when it comes to David lynch movies, so you can focus more on the emotions you’re feeling from the movie rather than whining about jt not making sense. The most polarizing works of art are usually the most original as well. Also watch Twin Peaks, all of your favorite TV shows wouldnt exist without it and it’s a masterpiece

    Now speed read all of James Joyce and rank them by nonsense. Lol .. David Lynch makes films with layers like classical composer builds a symphony. You might get the big crashing intro, but you aren't going to get the subtle sections on the first listen.

      That’s fair, I can only do a reaction based on the fact that I’ve seen it once, and I’m not close to revisit some of them. So I don’t think it has to be one or the others.

      Thats fair as well, I do think there’s a way to make a film that remain timeless in a way (the elephant man per example didn’t feel this way, even tho it plays in a pretty established frame) but I do think blue velvet is one I could revisit - but I’m more attracted to lost highway and Mulholland drive

    I dont understand how you can say David Lynch movies are non sensical just because you haven't found sense of them yet? The beautiful part of Lynch's movies imo is that you have to build your own sense of whats happening and no one holds your hand through them, and even then, it's not really about whats truly happening but instead how it makes you feel. It's about the journey not the destination (this is coming from an Eraserhead superfan who was butthurt you called it "abstract avant-garde bullshit")

    • @BurnAfterWatching_
      @BurnAfterWatching_ 5 місяців тому

      I appreciate the comment, and I’m glad you like it the films. I think it comes down to personal taste at that point, i feel like you leave so much potential on the table when you spend time chasing more abstract concepts over exploring the characters and themes of your story. As. You can see, I gave most of his films a positive score at the end (3 stars or more) and to me it a recognition that I don’t think the films are poorly made (except maybe inland empire 😂) and more that they aren’t my preference. Obviously films shouldn’t aim to just liked and be what people prefer, some of my favourite movies were challenging ones, but I also feels like they were maybe more grounded. Ahah and I totally get the feel vs understand approach, the eraserhead vibes, music, sound design, sets were great, just not a fan of the abstract moments.

    DUDE! You have fantastic production quality! I thought you were a much larger youtuber until I checked your channel at the end of the video. I was genuinely entertained this whole time! Keep it up my man you're a hidden gem in the movie review world. Wishing you the best of luck with your growth!
