One I wanted to add: in "Another Epilogue", Hoid says "Remember that time I got my memories stolen?”. Which is probably referring to TOdium's manipulation of his memory at the end of RoW
9:40 This was confirmed to be the latter by Brandon on the Shard cast where they interviewed him. Awakening is a fundamental thing that Investiture can do.
I didn't interpret it as the creators of the machine awakened it themselves, rather they programed the machine to eat spirits and when it went overboard, it consumed so much Investiture that it awakened itself, following its programing like a Command.
No interpretation required. Hoid says it directly on page 432: "Let this be a lesson. When you Awaken a device like this, be very, *very* careful about what Commands you give it to follow." Yes, Awaken and Commands are capitalized in the text.
@@TheCosmerenaut Well, certain metals interact with investiture in funny and useful ways. I'm sure there's some set up that can be done to allow it to interact with spirits. (I am assuming spirits are made out of investiture like Spren). They did say they needed a spirit to get it started, so that work as the initial investment.
Your work on this channel is amazing. I just finished this book and I love it, but I'm with you, Tress is my favorite of the secret novels. I'm not the best to pick up the connections, so I appreciate your work immensely.
Absolutely cannot wait for SP4. And Stormlight 5. And Mistborn era 3. And Elantra’s sequels. Whenever we approach a strormlight book I get obsessed with the Cosmere all over again. And I don’t think we can be too hyped for SA5.
Even if I didn't know this book was written during lockdown, I would have guessed it was, because at that time media talked about those unsung heroes, like Walmart employees (and nurses and so on), would still make sure there was food on the shelves for everyone despiute being paid like shit... Kinda like Nightmare Painters
7:44 i just recently saw a Q/A with brandon where he answered that the investiture in the Dor is closest to plasma, no idea whether he's stuck with that though.
Oh the Dor is definitely a plasma storm in the Cognitive Realm, but that's more of an exception than the rule. Weird things happened to make the Dor that way.
One thing I noticed was corrupted soul-investiture became black smoky shadows. This is similar to what Nightblood is, it eats souls and spews dark stuff (might be a coincidence, might be related to souls being consumed). Nightblood and the Father Machine are colossal fuck-ups with investing and giving a vauge command to an inanimate object(and perhaps both are awakening fuck-ups of collossal scale). And most importantly, If i remember correctly, the world, Komashi, is more terrifying and terrible than THRENODY. Threnody, the world messed up royally by Ambition and Odium clashing and Ambition's power getting chunks ripped off. This is terrifying, especially if my theory above is true for nightblood, as nightblood's capacity might be planet devastating if so.(It can collapse a perpendicularity already, so I guess thats not too far off) Most importantly to this nightblood theory is the fact that nightblood's command is "Destroy Evil" which because it doesnt know what Evil is, It translates to "Destroy" and thus its command is far, FAR worse than the Father Machine's.
Brandon Sanderson has described all the things that look like weird black smoke, so Nightblood, the Nightmares, and the Nightmothers creations, are what it looks like when investiture is taken from one source to be used for something else
In The Lost Metal, Shai asks Marasi what she would do if she held one of 16 unique and invaluable paintings. And Marasi's response was that she would hide it so mistery would make it even more appealing. I think Brandon will do something similar to the 16th shard. Revealing it only in the end game.
@@TheCosmerenaut I Meant we know the shards intent is wisdom or prudence sorry not that it’s called Intent. But definitely think could be a dawnshard with intent or will or something.
@TheCosmerenaut Also, the Father Machine and Nightblood definitely has a connection to Ruin, (black smoke is Ruin's Investiture) and the nightmares feel similar to Re-Shephir, the Midnight Mother. Shallan thinks that she/it might have been human, feeling that it was "searching for something it itself had lost."
Finally got to Yumi myself and immediately after finishing it here I am checking your video on how many connections I missed. Really enjoyed this secret project, but I also still like Tress more.
I guess if nothing else this initial sentiment of distance and pining for another without any ability to touch made me think of a an episode of Steven Universe that a friend showed me forever ago. I know there is a warm static when they happened to touch or come close with painter, but in the same way steven universe was the outcast that met another girl that was an outcast. they didn't know how to interact exactly, but became close. at one point since steven is a magical character, at some point they join together from dancing together. they become taller if not older, and seem to be able to live out their combined feelings and dance everywhere. but when emotions and dance come to a head, they eventually split again after essentially realizing that they like being together separately and where the value of their relationship was. I guess emotionally unaware/starved people that constantly blame themselves and are unsure of what to do.... might not be the same as a cartoon or kids fusing because one is a magical gem alien that can fuse through dancing with someone close/that they love. but my mind doesn't make much sense either, so here we are.
Brandon said in a interview the 17th shard that "awakening" here is like light weaving I e something multiple cosmere magic systems have there own angle on
I want to watch this SO BAD, but I haven’t read the book yet. I was waiting for my library to get the Ebook, and they updated it onto the website WHILE I WAS ASLEEP so by the time I saw it all the copies were checked out and there were over 20 holds on it. Anyway, I’m considering just buying it because otherwise I won’t get to read it for another three months. I can’t wait to come back after I read it and watch this vid though!!!
I saw a meme saying that Yumi is a "japanized" War breaker... 🤦 They are not even similar. Yumi was just delightful. Tress is still my favorite SP, BUT this was wonderful at every turn anyway.
There's a WoB saying he'd be tempted by Endowment, but nothing was confirmed. Also that was before we knew about Virtuosity, so it could have just been Brandon hedging his answer with our limited information.
I love Elantris very much, I can see some issues, but it's still pretty good. Warbreaker is excellent. The only Sanderson's books I couldn't handle (don't bully me, please) is Stormlight archive. It started off well, I loved some characters, developed attachments and then, somewhere in book two it started going down the hill. So, I was worried about trying to read Elantris and Warbreaker and was very pleasantly surprised.
Stormlight definitely has its own challenges; it's huge, and the learning curve for the world and characters and societies is STEEP. It took me a few tries to get into Elantris initially, so I'd recommend picking it up again when you've got the bandwidth for it!
Remember she imprinted her form onto his body for quite a while. His body *was* her(s). You could say that, in the end, he (his body) manifested her out of pure "muscle memory". As with bamboo.

Have you ever done a video on Savantism for Allomancy??? Like Wax's steel bubble? Edit: Sanderson has come out and said the steel bubble is not savantism. Savantism has to have a downside, and his bubble doesn't. Apparently, it is a side effect of mixing 2 powers called a resonance and why shallan has a photographic memory.
One thing I didn't quite get: It was explained, that Painters body conformed and changed to match Yumi when she inhabited it because of how strongly invested she is, while the same is not true for Painter inhabiting her body. But then how come Painters body transformed back right away when their connection got cut? It's not like Painter would have sufficient investiture to fuel this transformation.
His own spiritweb would have been trying to get him back into his own body, but Yumi's overinvestedness was preventing it. Think of it like a spring: Yumi was pushing the spring into a different direction, but as soon as she wasn't there anymore to push, it naturally went back to normal. His getting his own body back wasn't fueled so much as it was reverted.
Either Brandon IS that good and he CAN write that many stories or he has a team that he is overseeing with content. To be honest I'm wondering if he has experimented with LLM's copying his writing style to increase production speed at some point.
"Design, who doesn't have a real body. We all learned our lesson on that." I think I'm dense, I'm not sure what this is referencing. Is it the way Painter's body snaps back into his shape at the end?
