Hidden benefit of wrapping a windslayer around your GoPro, it bounces and helps protect the screen a bit (as well as the obvious) 👍
yeah definitely! Although I don't really like using them due to the bulk they add, but it would protect it. I've bought a screen protector to try and stop the crack from spreading
😂😂There goes Stephen, pissing into the wind again.
never learn 🤣
Brilliant video again Stephen. Love the footage. Amazing what you can get out of a GoPro. You need to teach me how to grade it well though. The difference when you've tweaked it is immense. I'm thinking of skipping the 11 though as the image quality from the 10 is great for YT. I don't think I'd ever film 8x7 and the 10 bit isn't a must for me. thanks mate.
Thanks Paul! There’s definitely a few simple ways to get a nice look to the footage without having to put in a ton of work. I have thought about making some LUT files that anyone could easily use.
Yeah honestly I don’t think you would benefit from upgrading. Only really if you planned to shoot 10bit and push the footage in grading
I laughed so hard at the pee bit. Happens to the best of us... From bitter experience that wind can change direction any moment and you can't stop once you've started 🤣. Even the Mourne Wall didn't give me shelter but created a vortex making the situation worse!!
Was raging when it happened, I was desperately rotating trying to match the movement of the wind, nothing worked 🙈
As always, a great video. Lovely put together, also the food :) Good to see you play with the tent in the wind and the GoPro on tour.
Thanks Sascha 🙂
Another great video! The hero 11 looks like a great bit of kit, it was really interesting to see the different lighting, speeds etc and what can be achieved. I think you made the right call considering the conditions, especially considering you weren’t well.
Thanks Simon! yeah I'm always surprised they keep finding ways to improve these cameras. very glad I came down, slept like a log, cozy in the van
Great video very funny, seen the short yesterday have been looking forward to this one. Good call to come down when you did the midgies would have been a nightmare in that weather
Thanks Stephen! I think any midges would have been blown into the sea that night!
Brilliant example of what can be achieved with a gopro 11 when skill and knowledge is applied. Absolutely brilliant, you've actually given me a few ideas for my future projects with me using my hero 11. Sometimes it's too easy to be fixated with DSLRS and utilising the manual settings whilst overlooking the benefits and simplicity of these compact action cams. Thank you.
Yeah I love the simplicity of the GoPro. It’s great for when I don’t want to bring my bigger cameras
As usual, the full range of human emotions .And as usual,I really enjoyed your video. Seeing the different colouring was interesting.
Thanks Alyson, I keep my non-human emotions under wraps 🤪 Glad you found the techy bits interesting as well 🙂
From start to finish it was excellent. You had me laughing the whole time. Most definitely did the right thing going back to the van. So looking forward to seeing more.
Thanks Alison! Well I hope there won’t be more of near getting blown off a mountain! 😂
Jeepers we had a similar night to this on Carn 😂 not fun in the morning with no sleep from the night before. That meal looked good 👍 😍
I hate not sleeping on camping trips, wipes me out completely the next day. The food was the big success of this one!
You have outdone yourself. Loved every second of this one.
Thank you! 🙂 I did not love every second of making it 🤣
Another crazy adventure, scary that wind, not sure if I'd even have the nerve to be up a mountain in weather like that and would defo be freaked out having to get out into it in the dark of the night and make my way back down. Sometimes the van sounds like the safer option lol.. lucky you weren't up bernagh or somewhere further to hike back.. cheers Stephen, another great watch! 🐕
Thanks Colin! Pity I can't bring the van up the mountain 🤣 Funny I actually felt more relaxed outside the tent than inside in that wind. Always seems worse from inside the tent. I knew the weather wasn't ideal which is why I choose Hen, definitely a good option if you might need a quick exit.
Its always a good idea to lean towards the side of caution and to follow your gut, nice watch.
Thanks Olan 🙂
That looked like good (if tiring) fun. Froggy wanted to go with you !
Thanks Nikki 🙂
LOL, that was a great intro. Well done!
By the way, I highly recommend using a foam cover for the GoPro. It serves as a 'dead cat' and significantly improves the audio quality. Keep creating!
Thanks! I use stick on mini wind shields, find they work as well as the foam cover but with a lot less bulk
@@StephenJReid You're right! I should try them as well. It won't overheat in that case
The best decision is to head down once it's safe to do so. There's no point putting yourself in harms way and risk your gear being destroyed by such strong winds. Fair enough if your far away from the car then hunkering down would probably be the safest option when the weather turns but I think you made the right choice and the video was a great watch. I loved how you showed different colour grades of the gopro and its a shame the screen was damaged
Thanks! Slept like a log in the van until I woke at 6:30am. Yeah would have been very different if I was much further away from the van. Deliberately choose that location as there was a question mark over the forecast.
Made the right call for sure! and the Hero 11 looks amazing!
Thanks! Didn’t fancy surfing down the mountain in the middle of the night!
Superb footage and editing buddy. Really enjoyed that 👌👌😀😀
Thanks! 🙂
You poor thing. The horror. I'm traumatised on your behalf! However great video. I'm sorry I did laugh at the sprinkling incident. Love also seeing the colouring and noise adjustments at the start. I have no grasp of it but those who do will find it educational. 👍
ha thanks Rachel! Glad you found the techy bits interesting too 🙂
This looks amazing, the editing as well is 🔥🔥... I'll still be going for the action 3 myself, as I'm weird and like to stick to the same ecosystem and all my other cameras+drones are DJI.. but there's no denying the 11 black is a truly amazing camera
Thanks! Action 3 looks like a really solid camera, good bit cheaper too.
cheap silicone sleeve or spongy wind muffler can protect a GoPro in these cases.
Brilliant Stephen. Love these vids. You’re some craic too 😂
Thanks Paul! 😁 Would you fancy camping in that wind up there?
Me thinks not. I’ll just watch you from the comfort of me sofa 😆
I’m guessing not
Was awesome video and you are hilarious 😂! Just got the GoPro 11 Black creator edition and I love it , haven’t made any videos yet but the reviews are awesome! Watching your video gave me few tips ! Thanks for sharing! And yep, great choice going back to the van 🚐! Cheers 🥂
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the video 🙂
Lmao … love it Steve .. ya grub kinda looked like a Fish pie .. But all in all, a wise move packing up, keep me glued .. love em man ✌️🙏
Haha maybe I should have brought some smoked salmon to mix in! Thanks for watching 🙂
Bellissimo video😉😀
Thank you! 🙂
Class video. Love Hen mountain it’s so accessible and quick to get up and the Tors are stunning. Pity you had to bail but I think it was the wise decision!
Thanks! 🙂
When the wind blows,
It really sucks!
On the plus side there were no midges! Just right to bail if you were close to the van. No fun enduring that for hours.
I loved those opening shots and the scrape of the gate. Nice one.
No midges was definitely the silver lining 😂😂 Thanks Paul!
First good Video i've seen with this camera! Thanks for sharing your settings, probl. the first one who shoots on a moody day and know how to colorgrade!
Thanks! You have to grade to suit the conditions, no point fighting them
@@StephenJReid Did you use some of the gopro labs QR codes? I sold my gopro hero 4 silver years ago, my new 11 will arrive in 3 days. I've seens GoPro Labs Video where you could record in 200mbits
I’ve heard that the weather in Ireland is so lovely that the Irish go to England for the sun. 😎
Haha. When I was in England this year I ended camping in weather nearly as bad as this! 😂
We like wild weather camps 😂 well sat in a chair watching lol . Footage looked good from the 11 pity about the screen . Right call returning to the van for a safe nights Kip atb Dave
Can't wait for the next relaxed camp, had too many stressful ones this year! 🤣 Thanks Dave
Amazing
Thanks
I like it
Thank you!
Cinematography is really good on this as well as the color grading. I expected to see that tent fly away it was so windy. Cracked me up you had footsies for inside the tent. Sorry your camera broke. Keep up the outstanding videos.
Camping slippers are the best 😂 might make a video about them
Now we want revisited GoPro hero 11 best video settings 😁😁
Haha. I might do that one!
Erring on the side of caution is always the best option When the forecast is wrong. Your gut instinct is usually correct.
Thanks Alan!
Excellent job, tons of fun and nice work on color grading, I really like the way you do with the noise, do you have some preset about? Would be interesting to study the process !
Thanks! 🙂 for the noise for this all I did was experiment with brightness and contrast until the noise disappeared
Great video… felt your angst of the potential all nighter ! The colour grading was epic, what’s your best video that shows how you do it? Thanks
Thanks! Hmmm I don't have a specific video on grading GoPro footage but this one shows off drone footage grading: ua-cam.com/video/6FHqk0zQR1U/v-deo.html Although I'm constantly experimenting with new techniques.
nice video thanks🙌🏽
You took a few minutes to leave that gate 😂
😂
It’s always good to give your gear a good testing, you’ll feel more confident with it next time if you get stuck in the wind and far from a car park. By the way, I camped exactly where you pitched and in similar conditions. I stuck it out, my friend packed up, my tent got hammered . Great video as usual. P.S. it’s better not to pee into the wind 😂
Yeah the tent is rock solid, although the inner flaps around something crazy as it's very loose. Was it worth sticking it out when you did? I just can't be dealing with not sleeping for a night, means I have to write off the next day.
Ha I wasn't peeing into the wind! it was sneaky and changed direction🤣
@@StephenJReid Not sure if it was worth it, but I'd be disappointed if I didn't stick it out, it was the worst wind my 4-5 year old Scarp 1 has ever experienced. Forecast was 15-25mph winds, in reality it was 50+ mph. I rarely sleep well camping anyway, so it wasn't about sleep. Guess its different if you have to do creative type work the next day.
My friend's GoPro11 exploded on his head while he was playing with a ball. GoPro 11 cameras get very hot and may burn.
Be careful this is a very dangerous video camera.
Your 👀 in the windy tent scene🤣🤣
Waiting for the tent to blow away 😂😂
Me encanta el vídeo 📹😍
Thank you !
Oh the laughs....get'em every single time I watch. What I come here for!!! Oh and....2:55...❤...👋🐑
😁 Thanks!
Thanks for a great video- I'd gave quit and packed up long before you did. The videoing and editing shows what is possible when you know what you are doing.
Thanks Jonathan!
Class video Stephen 🧡 definitely the right decision you made 👏 have a good week a d see you in a trail ☺️🧡 Jens
Thanks Jens! 🙂
Sorry Stephen I feel totally betrayed! I was expecting a running video! Not camping and technology!!!! Sorry couldn't help it! 🤣Great stuff as always! 😉
Thanks! 🙂 not betraying people is my goal
Great video had kids up hen mountain in the summer for a walk, trust your gut definitely right decision made 👍
Hen is a great mountain, quite small, short hike, interesting summit and great views. Thanks!
@@StephenJReid think u got scammers in the comments saying I won a prize, I reported it
@@paulrice7895 Thanks! Yeah its a scam
what a cracking video! loved it. I think you made the right decision, you might of ended up blowing to a different hill with that wind! How did the go pro battery hold up as I have the 9 and usually the battery is dead in less than an hour.
Thanks Jason! Hmmm I used two batteries making this and always carry 3. Seemed similar to Hero10. Hard to tell exactly.
been there! I feel you!
its not so much fun!
What an adventure, Im planning Binnion at the weekend, hope conditions are better. Hero11 looks good but I already have a 10. Is an upgrade worth it? Would I be better with 2 gopros or an Insta 360? Maybe I should leave filming to the pros and enjoy the journey.
I like the combo. A GoPro and a Insta360 together give you a ton of creative options.
Actually have a video about this in the works
Thanks for sharing this adventure and camera test! It sounds like the Hero 11 isn’t too much of an upgrade from the Hero 10 where it wouldn’t make sense to buy if you have a 10. When color grading did you notice a significant difference in the 10 bit color over 8 bit in the hero 10?
Thanks Ray. There’s definitely a difference between 8bit and 10bit for Color grading, skies especially have more information in them. But youll only notice it if you plan on doing a lot of colour grading and pushing the image.
The old saying that "Discretion is the better part of valor" pretty well covers it.
Very true!
I take the GoPro 10 on my wild camps, but I’ve never colour graded. Enjoyed this video, and I’d have made the same decision as you! Nobody wants to use their expensive tent as a raft 😂
Thanks! Haha might have been fun surfing down the mountain in a tent 😂
@@StephenJReid new thumbnail is a banger btw
was waiting on some drone shots lol oj me and my mate camped on hen mountain a few years ago and his tent crumpled, it was only a 40 quid one from go outdoors and it was august, we both ended up in my banshee 200 for the night and haven't spoken since haha. we thought because it was a handy wee mountain, we wud be grand but we very quickly found out we wudnt be.
Haha I nearly brought the drone but I was committed to just using the one camera.
That sounds like a cozy night! 😂
Yeah I think hen is deceptively exposed and windy. I wonder if the wind comes over the mountains first that maybe it’s accelerating down and onto hen full force.
It must have been some crazy high speed wind-blown fall, from a small tripod, to crack the screen. I have twice had my Hero10 come off my bike at about 30kmh onto tarmac (due to my own dumb user-error) but had, luckily, no damage at all to the cam.
Yeah it literally fell about 3 inches backwards onto a mostly flat rock. Must have hit a tiny piece of gravel sitting on it as well as being blown over really fast
footage looks great, and I'm quite surprised by how good the camera's mic is considering the conditions
I had small windjammer on it, but even still was surprisingly clear!
amazing!!! have you considered doing tutorials on your editing & colour grading? it seems extremely advanced and I could see a lot of people learning from your videos.
Yeah I’ve done a few but I’m always changing my methods. Here’s a recent short one about drone footage: ua-cam.com/video/6FHqk0zQR1U/v-deo.html
But I used a somewhat different approach for the GoPro footage
Wow. The wind speed was brutal. Glad you made it out before weather got worse. Btw, do you still use the ZV1? 😅🤔
Thanks! Don’t use the ZV1 any more. Loved it, was a great camera but I had too many cameras so decided to reduce how many I was using.
Another great video Stephen. Reminds me the day my 7 yr old nearly went airborne at the top of Doan. What did you use to pinpoint the GoPro on your descent?
Oh yeah Doan is another one can be incredibly windy. What do you mean by pinpointing the GoPro? Do you mean finding it again when I was setting it down to get shots? I just remembered where I put it. Plus there’s a tiny red recording light that shows up when you get closed
@@StephenJReid yeah just had these visions of you having to search for the GoPro in the dark. Good memory.
omg, how did you managed to come down the mountain? 😱In the video it looked so dark and the light didn't really highlight that much ground.
Was it brighter in the reality?
Was a bit brighter than it looked but torches don’t travel as far downhill. Thankfully it’s a well marked route.
Yeah that looked (and sounded) pretty miserable Stephen. Good call to retreat in time before the heavens opened up. Nice to have a cosy van waiting for you :-)
Thanks Peter, was significantly warmer and quieter in the van!
I try to ride out situations like this when I’m in them (avoid them when I can see it coming!) but reality is if it’s going to steadily kill the enjoyment of hiking and camping by perserversing through a shit night for the sake of it then it’s not worth it so I think you did the right thing. Only good “practice” for stayin in these sorts of conditions when leading up to a through hike to at least get a taste of that misery can be like if not experienced already 😂
I’ve rode out a few windy nights in the past, although only one was about as bad as this. If I hadn’t been sick I might have stayed but really couldn’t afford loosing a full nights sleep.
I’ve had a bad experience in the past with bad sleep for multiple nights and it’s really mad multi-day wild camping trips unappealing to me. But maybe I need to try again.
Stephen what is the sheet you put under your air mattress? Does it prevent it from deflating?
It’s a lightweight thin foil backed foam matt adds a bit of warmth for very little weight (about 100grams). Think this is one I have: amzn.to/3JO9eMo
@@StephenJReid legend thanks mate 😁
Nothing wrong with turning back/packing up in bad weather, done the same myself 3 times this year. Only time I couldn't was last month, 5 days in of 8 in the lakes, biblical rain and wind in the lakes, fml that was an interesting night 😂. Cracking video and as always common sense wins out 👌(photography hints went straight over my troglodyte head 😉)
Thanks Chris. That sounds like zero fun 🤣
You know I’ve hardly ever done any multi-day camping trips. Finding the time is tricky but the big issue for me is I usually sleep badly and just feel terrible the following day. So it’s put me off doing it more.
man up you big wimp 😂. Only joking I would have been out of there first gust . I hate the wind . Can handle the rain but I always think the wind is gonna take the fly sheet off send it away up the mountain . the go pro looks the job , was looking at the osmo 3 . Any thoughts on that ?
haha thanks! yeah there's something actually nice about camping in rain. But wind just gets my adrenaline going as my brain thinks the tent will tear any second.
Osmo looks fantastic for the money. I think the GoPro has the edge but it costs quite a bit more.
@@StephenJReid have just ordered the osmo 👌. Hope to get out soon up the mournes with it . Might wait for a break in the weather though 😂
Nice! hope it serves you well! 🙂
and yes wait for better weather! 🤣
Def a good call in striking camp thanks to the dodgy weather forecast, though id say youd be fine in that wee tent if you didnt have the option to bail. The Gopro 11 looks to be kicking above its weight , though Ill stick to the 10. Its always interesting how the next generation of gopros evolve, I often wonder if theres ever a time they just cant improve any more.
Thanks, yeah I think the tent would have taken it fine, very solid although the inner is very flappy in wind so it seems worse on the inside. Most Hero 1o users wouldn't get much benefit with the 11, really only if you are going to be pushing the colours.
I do think action cameras have a way to go before they will plateau. Although every GoPro has had great quality stable footage since the Hero6. Incremental upgrades now.
@@StephenJReid Stephen youve been scammed by the Telegram scammer,
Thanks for the call to let me know! Made some changes to the comment filters, hopefully that stops it. UA-cam needs to sort this out. Seeing it everywhere.
@@StephenJReid no probs , just send the mavic 3 to Rob and I’ll pick it up there 😁🤣👍🏻
@@Sagewitchevensong haha if I had a Mavic 3 I’d keep it, sold my Air2s. Only have the Mini 3 Pro now and the Avata.
What sharpness setting do you use?
Medium or Low, it makes the footage a lot less “digital” looking.
nice
What editing software do you use buddy
Adobe Premiere pro. Been using it for over 10years. Video production is my day job
Definitely made the right decision, sounded class. So is extreme weather camping is going to be your next project ? 😂
Haha I think not. Although actually some of my first camping videos were of winter camping without a tent. Cold night!
hi how many batery do u bring it to shot this video?
I think I used 2
@@StephenJReid thanks bro, just received my new
Gopro11 just now
What tripod do you use?
GoPro Shorty, although it blew over in the wind. I’ve since bought the gorilla pod for GoPro to try put
Cooking inside a tent........not your best idea. With that said, dried potato flakes are the BEST thing camping! I took them camping with me a couple weeks ago and loved them.
I’ve cooked inside a tent quite a few times, it’s very possible and essential in bad weather in exposed places. Although perhaps passing boiling water over my legs wasn’t the best option 😬😬
Yeah it’s great eating something that tastes like real food
Great video, but the colour grading is way off red signs looking orange. Would have preferred straight out of the camera as a true test
This was a test of colour grading. Would have been pointless straight from camera as I shot using the flat profile. Colour of that sign was accurate though. I didn’t touch the reds/oranges
If you feel that you made the right decision then that's the only 1 that counts
Thanks Craig!
Mmm 🤔 I wonder if sir Edmund Hillary pissed into gale force winds? 😳😂😂😂 ✌️🤙
😂 he was probably coated from head to toe
Do you use anything for audio? Just the onboard GoPro sound? Any window blockers or mic? Sounds really good!
Just onboard with one small wind jammer on the front mic. ua-cam.com/video/U_LGYB2x4HM/v-deo.html
Great video as usual. Totally made the right decision to come back down to your cosy van, you don’t get medals for being a eejit. And thankfully I’ve never managed to get pee in my face 🤔…now anyone reading this is trying to figure out how a girl would manage that 😂😂
Don’t underestimate the power of unpredictable wind! 😂
Pouring boiling water between your legs, you are a brave, but crazy man. Good decision to go back in the van when you did. Packing up in the rain is horid, plus it is all wet, and you have to unpack it later and dry it out. Yuck. PS: Confusious say: Wise man never fight the wind, find never lose.
Definitely potential for a few worse disasters! Yeah massive pain having to deal with soaked kit. I hate the treacherous wind!
wow nice intro 😭😂
Thanks!
At least it wasn’t the GH6 screen that got crack amirite…
Indeed!
First!!
First!! 😁😁😁
Weather forecaster 🙄 they're real fecking messers 🤨
yup! I checked 3 different forecasts multiple times during the day. they never agreed and were different every time I looked!
Better safe than sorry remains the best decision-the wise sniveling coward lives to camp another day (as does his gear, too!)
Thanks Dee
