  • This is a slightly different trip with some big news at the end. I visit the sirens of Lynwood, Gardenia, and San Pedro. This quickly became one of my favorite trips as I got to see so many interesting looking sirens.

I hear that back in the day. The few selection of cities that did get sirens installed had them installed on traffic light poles.

Great trip, Doug! I like the one attached to the water tower. Gonna miss you here in CA, my friend. Come back anytime!

most SD-10's have the band, but the early models have optional screens instead of bands, which increased the sound output

Regarding the sirens in Cencal: Fresno has quite the system of old SD-10s, and the Air National Guard base at KFAT also has a system of Federal Signal DSAs and Modulators if you are willing to check that out. They also have an old GCS Model 2 that’s inactive.
PS- Central California is a huge conglomerate of random sirens (some of which are actually pretty rare) that all the small towns have for some reason, lol

My hometown of Mendota has a Fedelcode I believe. It's still active I think. Back on the 8th of June I saw the SD-10 by Fresno Yosemite Airport, and the one on top of the Fresno Memorial Auditorium. Beautiful pieces of history, wish that they could be restored.

So am I. There's a whole other system in Fresno, but they shut it off in 1977. In 1984 some teens decided to set it off as a prank.

Good news: Back on June 8th we went to an old siren in Fresno. I was in California for my vacation/grandmother's funeral and got the one near Fresno Yosemite airport. Federal Signal SD-10A/B, system was shut down in 1977.

@@DayTrippingAdventurer There's an RSH-10 in Los Banos, CA. It's 60 something miles from my hometown and it still works. Though it only does noon blasts. They used to have 2 FS Model 2s but 1 was removed, and the other is inactive.

Model 7’s range from 40’s to 80’s, the ones you showcased look like late 50’s to early 80’s models.

The early sd10’s had only chicken wire covering the stator rotor combo. Later sd10’s had sheet metal covers added around the stator to help deflect the sound to the upper and lower sheet metal projectors to supposedly help the sound carry further. I think it would sound better with just the chicken wire only but that’s just my opinion. Gonna miss your LA siren walks, sad that you’re moving. Best wishes!!!
