As a longtime Hades player, I wish this had existed when I started playing Dead Cells a few months ago. A few things I'd like to add for the people who are coming from Dead Cells or are just newer to Hades: The blue and purple boons at 9:14 (and a few other places) are boons with increased rarity, which is roughly equivalent to gear quality in Dead Cells. A base-quality weapon would be a common boon, a "+" weapon would be a rare boon, and a "++" weapon would be an epic boon (an "S" weapon would be a heroic boon, but those require specific conditions to get and you usually won't see them). Every standard boon always has a chance to have a higher rarity, and you can use keepsakes, the mirror, and a few other items to make them more likely. You can't upgrade the rarity of a boon directly, but you'll find Poms of Power throughout a run that you can use to level up a boon and increase its stats. In Dead Cells, you can get affixes on your gear that synergize with each other, such as "+80% damage to a poisoned target" on your main weapon and "poisons the enemy" on your other weapon or a skill. Hades doesn't have random affixes, but if you have boons from two different gods, they can offer you a duo boon that makes their core mechanics interact with each other. A good example is the one between Aphrodite and Artemis. Aphrodite's boons make your abilities weaken enemies, and Artemis' boons give your abilities a chance to deal critical hits. Their duo boon is Heart Rend, which makes your critical hits deal +150% damage to weakened enemies. Duo boons are a lot harder to get than affixes, but most of them are powerful enough to be worth planning a build around. This is a more meta tip, but rebind your controller! Pretty much everyone agrees that reload should be _anywhere_ except the default (I have it on L2). I also recommend rebinding dash and cast to bumpers or triggers (I have them on L1 and R2 respectively) because it makes some actions easier, but it's not required. Finally, alongside Jawless Paul and all the other great guides on UA-cam, you should check out Lee Reamsnyder's build guide - leereamsnyder.com/hades-build-guide - once you have a few runs under your belt. It has builds for every aspect as well as info on things the game doesn't explain (like how dash-strikes on the bow charge faster, or how miniboss rooms always have a rare boon), and it's also the reason I was able to clear 32 heat with every weapon (still working on every aspect, though). PS: If you think Hades has too many meta-currencies, try Hades 2.
This video is perfect for me. I just got back into Dead Cells after bouncing off it a few times between 2018-2020 and found your channel approximately yesterday. I fell in love with Hades a few years ago and after clearing 32 heat, i gained the confidence to try harder games like Dead Cells, so I'm glad to see this crossover love.
O man, Hades and Dead Cells... both are in my top 5 games of all time. The great thing about Hades was the story, dying is never fun but after dying in Hades you unlock new dialogues and story development to a point that dying was not so bad because of that. Great design, loved that. Dead Cells has none of that but had way more weapons and you can choose different paths, that last thing was a little bit what Hades lacked imo. S-tier video!
Agreed on the routing for Hades - it can get a little tiring going through the same four levels over and over but there's enough build variety where it didn't get too bad for me. After watching your 32 heat video I might need to finally attempt that! Only cleared 20 with all weapons, haven't gotten that last statue yet.
If it wasn't for Hades, I don't think I would have ever gotten into the roguelike/lite genre. The game pulled me in very quickly. Especially after I got my hands on the Twin Fists. You can never go wrong with punching monsters into a fine paste. As for another roguelike/lite that I would recommend, it is by far my favourite one. That game is Blazblue Entropy Effect. It's a roguelike/lite spin-off of the Blazblue fighting games. The biomes in the game are segmented like in Hades until you get to the final biome, where it goes into a more Dead Cells style. Being a fighting game spin-off, the combat is intense. Instead of weapons, you get to choose between 11 different characters who all have their own movesets and gimmicks. Every character at the start of a run has a normal attack string, a heavy attack by holding the normal attack button down, a special attack/skill, and a dash/dodge button. As you progress in a run, you will come across two types of modifiers to make your chosen character more destructive. The first of the modifiers are called tactics. These are similar to boons in Hades. They will enhance your attacks, specials, and dash with different elements such as fire, lightning, ice, poison, light, shadow, or blade. There is also a 4th type of tactic you can get which are summon skills. As the name implies, you can summon something to aid you. Each element has their own summon. Another similarity between tactics here and boons in Hades is that each starting tactic has many second tier ones to increase their potency and also have duos with other tactics to make something truly explosive. Now, as for the second modifier, they are known as potentials. These are the meat and potatoes of your build. Each potential is unique to each character and is pretty much different parts of your chosen character's moveset from the main games. Each potential also has different levels to them, with each one adding new effects. For example, the character Ragna's gimmick is that he spends some health whenever he uses his skill/special, but when it hits, he recovers more health back than he spent. He has potential called Blook Kain which will make it so every attack he does spends health and then recovers his health with each hit. The more you level it up, you don't spend as much health when you attack. Plus, if you have low health , you recover even more than normal. If you can max out the level of his universal enhancment, which is what Blood Kain is a part of, you regular attacks no longer spend health but will still recover your health when you land an attack. That's just one out of many potentials on one character. Saying there's a lot of depth to the builds you can make is a massive understatement. Highly recommend checking the game out. It's my favourite roguelike/lite. Granted, I was already a massive fan of the main games, so Entropy Effect becoming my favourite roguelike/lite isn't all that surprising.
Oh wow, so stoked to hear that about Hades! I can see it being the gateway into the genre for folks who haven't had much experience with it. Do you have a favorite fist aspect? I'm 50/50 between Zag and Demeter. Taking Zag with the Plume and trying to get more dodge from Hermes is a trip but I love those 5x special hits with something like Freeze or Artemis for big crits. I've heard of Blazblue Entropy Effect before but haven't researched much about it. I appreciate you writing this all out - clearly you have some passion for the game! I love how you broke things down. It sounds a bit similar to Hades in a way where there are lots of ways to pile things on and change the core gameplay from run to run outside of just having different weapons or mutations. I have few other things in the oven right now and just bought Control for PS5 but will keep my eye on this one. Side note - the most surprising thing to me from watching gameplay was the music. What I heard was good but expected more guitar since Daisuke Ishiwatari is so instrumental in the franchise. Maybe since people will be playing the same levels over and over they wanted something that wouldn't be too up front?
@DisappointedGiant Demeter Fists are my go-to. Get the explosive uppercut hammer and Artemis on special and watch as you vaporize your enemies. As for why the music in Entropy Effect isn't as bombastic as the main series is because Arc System Works aren't the devs for it so Daisuke isn't involved in the soundtrack. If you want some Blazblue songs that have that classic Daisuke Ishiwatari vibe, listen to Susanoo's theme called Must Die. Blazblue music is just awesome in general. X-matic is another great song in the game. It's the song that plays when Carl fights his dad Relius.
@@KillaCheeto56 Oh, interesting - I didn't realize that about the dev team. And hell yes to that Demeter fist setup! Build up the hits on little mobs then unleash on the bigger ones.
@DisappointedGiant Yeah, the only things in the game that are Blazblue related and the playable characters and 2 of the bosses. Everything else has nothing to do with Blazblue, which is kinda weird, but I don't mind. A couple other things I forgot to mention about the game is that the characters also come equipped with 2 passive abilities. An example of a passive ability (and probably the best one in my opinion) is the one Jin has where if you dodge an attack at the right moment you slow down time similar to Witch Time in Bayonetta. Also, whenever you finish a run, the game will save the build you just made, and you can take it into side challenges like a boss rush and other challenge modes. Plus, when you start a new run, you can pick two of your previous runs and equip them to your new character, gaining the passives as well as two of the tactics from each of those runs. Doing so also unlocks another attack type called Legacy Skills which allow you to use one of the attacks from the legacy character's arsenal. And yes, tactics can effect these too. As for Hades, one other build I like to do with Demeter Fists is getting the Kinetic Launcher hammer to turn the special into a fireball and then charge the big hit to shoot 5 fireballs at once.
@@KillaCheeto56Saving a build for boss rush or a new run is such a big brain move on the dev side. I love that idea. This sounds so deep. I hope they release physicals at some point since I'm an old man who likes discs on my shelf.
