    its all about the angle of the dangle! lets get on it! if you want to remove a lot of dirt to fill in holes or low spots you angle the forward cutting blade by shortening the top link. this makes the box blade tilt forward and towards the tractor making for a aggressive cutting action. three things happen here first the ripper teeth cut into the soil, second the blade cuts into the soil, third the box fills up with material. leaving the box blade / three point adjusted all the way down will allow the box blade to fill with dirt and deposit dirt inside of any holes that you drive over. It will only fill holes smaller than the width of the box blade. if you wish to move a box blade filled with dirt to a low spot let the box fill on the high spot and when you arrive at the low spot simple raise the rear lift arms as your moving forward. This will drop or unload the box blade. Drive to the high spot again and lower your three point to begin the heavy cutting action again. In this adjusted position you can also back up with the box blade to spread dirt or gravel piles. The rearward blade will be up high allowing a few inches of gravel or dirt to slip under as the front blade is angled down it will ride up and over the portion being spread.
    Now lets look at running a box blade at level. At level the box blade’s forward and rearward cutting blades will both scrape the ground but not cut aggressively. The box blade will fill with materials dirt or gravel when moving forward. Lowering the ripper teeth will fill the box blade faster and cut a little deeper. Raising the ripper teeth the box blade will fill slower and not cut as deep. In these two situations the box blade will make liter cuts and fill small holes that do not exceed the width of the box blade itself. You can also use it as before by letting the box fill and then raising the box when you approach your low spot to empty the box out over the low area. In the level position with rippers raised the box blade does not aggressively cut pulling forward or backing up. You can spread material by pulling forward or backing up by simply raising the three point on the tractor.
    Now lets tilt the box blade backward. In this position the box blade will not cut pulling forward but it will drag loose material to some what level although not very fast. I use this setting for finish grading to smooth out material I have already spread. Of course in this position the box blade will cut aggressively when backing up if the three point is all the way down. If you raise the three point of the box blade driving in reverse will push and spread piles of material to a set thickness based on how high the three point is raised
    I typically use this to back fill a ditch when I need to back up to the ditch. A good example of this is filling in against a house foundation you can back in with the box blade and fill right up to the house’s foundation.
    Now lets angle the box blade. When you need to cut a long ditch to divert water the box blade can be used by tilting the blade to one side and pulling it along to cut a drainage ditch. I find keeping the box blade level helps to remove a little material over a longer span as apposed to tilting forward and cutting aggressively over a shorter span. Take your time and make multiple passes as needed. Once the ditch angle is established you can level the box blade and simply drive down the ditch line to remove any loose material to another location. Also even though many people use the box blade for this I find a road blade is better suited to cutting drainage ditches. This is just my opinion and not necessarily true.
    I hope you enjoyed this over view of the box blade and I hope this helps remove some of the mystery of using one. Remember there is no instructions that take the place of common sense and experience. So simply get out there and do it! You will make mistakes but you will learn from them.

    This is the best tractor video of all time. It is a box blade bible. You can pick up new pointers every time you watch it, no matter how many times that is. As important is how fun it is to watch.

    My husband passed away in February of this year. We had to sell our place and move back on the two acres we bought when first married. It's a hill type place with a 1500 foot gravel driveway. Needless to say there is just tons of work to be done. Our other tractor kicked the bucket right before he passed. The first thing I did was go buy a tractor. I'm not an ordinary blonde female. I can learn fast and have always LOVED tractors and the outside. I'm having to do the self teaching of my tractor and how to change out the implements and do things the right way. I'm not a patient person and like to just jump into what I'm doing without have to read the instructions. That's what I did with the first use of my box blade. It kept digging and would not release! Your video and the way you explained it was so on point and any elementary kid could learn, even a regular blonde female, lol!! Thank you for making this video. Well I'm off to do some tractoring and to move some milled asphalt on my driveway. Me and my tractor has got this!!!

      Cindy I am very sorry for your loss and hope you have peace.
      I too am a blonde but definitely not a typical female by any stretch!
      I’ve run my kubota for 13,years never owning or operating one prior too and I took it upon myself to learn. I’ve become pretty damn good at finessing the bucket loader and just recently purchased a bush hog and yard box. I’ve been removing dirt from my horses paddock to refill with gravel for dry ground. I needed some pointers on using it and I agree he explained beautifully though now I want the hydraulic top link! 💰 😍
      From one blonde to another.... we got this! 😉

      It is so sad that your husband is gone. You sound like a good person with good ambitions in life. So many people give up after their partner goes, and that is too bad.
      Some of my experience with blondes have been one who felt she should fly to Africa on someone else's dime all the time and the others were looking to be high or drunk at every opportunity. But I have met some who, like you were very awesome examples of humanity. Be safe out there.

    Dave, I did make one of those indicators. I used an 1 1/4 and a 2/12 inch muffler clamp, some 3/8 rod and a couple of small plates welded to the saddle part of the clamp. The 3/8 rod was welded to one of the plates on the 1 1/4 clamp. The other plate welded to the 2 1/2 clamp had a drilled hole that the rod could slip through. Thanks for all you do here.

I used mine with out the hydraulic top link for years. just need to manually adjust it is all. use a tape measure once its in the neutral position you will only need to adjust it by a full turn or two or three which makes just the right amount of difference. using your three point lift helps a lot. just takes a little practice.

      now these videos help folks is what its all about. don't kid yourself I have gotten emails and messages from seasoned veterans of the tractor world who have said they never knew some of these techniques I talk about. after a lot of this stuff is how I do the set up based on dissecting the results and creating a formula to follow. some things are found in various instruction manuals others are simply deduced over years of practice and asking myself the question " why?" why does this work and this not work? what went wrong and how can I fix it? does it make sense to me? if that all comes to fruit and is repeatable then I have a winner! I'm thrilled you have found my channel and I know you will find some very valuable tips and tricks in many of these videos I have created. Not sure why i watch these videos, i was a union wheel tractor or skip- loader operator fo years. It's very cathartic, and it would have been a lot nicer than the way i was taught. its to late Vic I have already nearly finished it. doing for others is what gives me the most pleasure in life. I was born with a servants heart and I can not seem to shake it. I wont lie it took a lot out of me to make it but I took my time and took several breaks to rest. I needed a small shop project anyway. just need that final measurement and an address to ship to. if it works great if it dont work its no big loss. perhaps it will give you an idea to try from there.

    • @victorcastle1840
      @victorcastle1840 7 років тому +1

      You surely do have a big heart Dave . I managed to get out and look at it late yesterday and didn't realize it had a bump out above the gear shift. I need to get a straight edge out there and see where it hits the knob shaft.
      I tooke the knob off and it appears to be 3/8th inch fine thread . Plan on getting to town this morning with the knob, to see exactly what it thread it is .
      I was thinking if I should get lucky and hit the threads far enough back, could just take some thing and thread it in the side and then on the end and come straight up, since I have about 5 inches of clearance to the floor board. Then I could come straight up 5-6 inches and put the shift knob on , with out putting a threaded extension on the gear shift threaded shaft. Which would make it stick out farther.
      Maybe I can get my sister in law over and take a picture today, with her smart phone.

    I wished I had a hydro top link! My experience using them with a screw top link is they shake like hell, I set mine where it cuts and lock it off and forget about that trying to angle, like you said when they fill they quit cutting but they get heavy when they are full. Box blading to me is fun I always scrap down the areas where we feed hay through out the winter cutting the ruts out makes mowing smooth. Love your videos Dave..

    We have a Case 570n 4×4 LL for grading. It has a box blade on the back and a loader bucket on the front. The best part is it operates hydraulically. It has down pressure, you can change the left right angles, up down and even cut and spill with a few controls . oh and the rippers lower with a control too. It's awsome! It also has a PTO if you need it. It's a 3 point hitch system. It's just beefier and made for commercial use. It you ever grade with one you'll never want to use a gravity box blade again. By far it's the best thing Case has ever made!!

      @daveknowshow  6 років тому

      quinton riley sounds like a great machine. Case makes awesome equipment. I'd have one if I could afford it.

    • @rockybabb6225
      @rockybabb6225 5 років тому

      Very few tractors actually have down pressure. It is the weight of box blade that does the cutting. Look at the difference of the blade at work and this cheap little blade. A good 6ft boxblade will weigh around 1500lb.

    Good to see someone is using hydraulics for tilt control. Hydraulics gives an operator full, precise control. My family had a grading company and started adding them to our grading tractors (Ford) back in the 70s. Like any trade, grading is all about experience, but adding hydraulics will 'up' a home owner's tractor game unmeasurably. If you decide to add them consider where you mount the control valves. My controllers are under the seat toward the shifter so I can easily access them going forward or backward.

    • @daveknowshow
      @daveknowshow  5 років тому

      yes I have mine beside the seat and that makes them easily accessible. the hydraulics top and tilt definitely up the game and the results really shine. thanks for stopping by my channel I hope you fine other interesting videos on my channel.

    Hi Dave
    That hydraulic top link sure is an improvement for a box blade.
    The thing I like about my roller box blade is the weight of the roller helps push the blade into hard ground. One problem I found with a box blade is it needs to be independent from the tractor, so if the back tire rolls over a hump it won't also raise the blade. I just drop the 3 point all the way and the roller does all the work of controlling the height of the blade. And I am in control of the blade height right from the tractor seat. No more wash boarding effect, and when you want to transport dirt with it the roller makes the dragging much easier for the tractor to pull. The only down side is the fact I can no longer push dirt backwards with the blade so I just use the front loader for that.
    Cheers John

    • @daveknowshow
      @daveknowshow  6 років тому

      your talking about a pulverizer which is the non pto version. the pto version is called a harley rake. they work very well but they are different animals than a box blade. you can set the box blade to avoid the washboard effect also by adjusting your ground speed and the speed in which the three point drops under gravity. I'm working on a video to explain this now actually.

    • @daveknowshow

    Finally purchased a box blade . . . I am reviewing your lessons on the subject this weekend so I can use it properly. You must be the master at box blading since Outdoors with the Morgans gave you a shoutout recently . . .lol I hope you are doing well. BTW, love the marketing language .....angle of the dangle!

    I can feel my fingers being chopped off every time you put your hand under that blade up in the air!

    • @daveknowshow
      @daveknowshow  5 років тому +15

      all the places I have put my fingers this was likely one of the safer spots. the odds of this falling compared to the odds of hitting your hand or wrist while holding a ground rod with one hand while I or someone else swings a sledge hammer to drive it down 8 ft deep in the earth. or holding a nail while swinging a hammer at it. well you get the idea. not that the thought of it falling didn't cross my mind. it sure did cross my mind. I guess the risk was worth it to make a video to help viewers like you. {smile} if you would like to make a donation to help with future medical expenses just in case, you can donate to my channel via paypal at this link. {smile} paypal.me/daveknowshow?locale.x=en_US

      It's not out of the cards to say it can't happen but it vary rarely does with mechanical linkages. The problem is electrical connections.

    Great vid Dave, just subscribed. I like your hyd top link indicator and made think. If you done a lot of blading, might be worth it to make a remote indicator, like take and old boat steering cable or a choke cable and fasten it where you have your slide bar and let come to the dash or side fender and make a little slide with hash marks for positive and negative pitch and you could mark zero for neutral with out having to turn around and look, just a thought. keep up the vids.

      WOW first off thanks for subscribing! secondly thanks for the suggestion! that would be so cool to use a cable and indicator that could be seen from the dash or fender panel. I will be pondering that idea and if it seems like a mod that can be easily set up to be disconnected I may do it. " I would need to disconnect it when installing the backhoe " the backhoe and post hole digger is about the only reason I would need to disconnect it since the top link must be removed when using those two implements. thank you so much for this great suggestion! I will be subscribing back to your channel in case you upload some videos. hope you have had a great weekend!
