How to Make a Ruffle Wrap Skirt 100% from Scratch!

- DIY wrap skirt with a ruffle bottom made entirely from scratch! And it only cost me 5$!
Tips
For the front pattern, i cut it at 5”, but it’s better to cut 3-4” in for the skirt to wrap completely around
For the ribbons, i sewed the short one on the right end of the skirt, and the long one on the left
For the button hole, it’s on the left side of the skirt!

thank you for all the lovely comments♡ i would love to see your recreations so tag me @aliyanson on instagram with your final designs! alot of you seem to be confused about the ribbons, i put a q&a clarifying any questions in my description box!😌
Alicia Yanson what sewing machine do u use
I’m so confused about the whole button hole like I’m unclear about that whole thing and where my ribbon goes through and how I’m tying it
Alicia Yanson what type of fabric did you use? Also could you tell me the store or link?
If I didn’t want to add a ruffle at the bottom, and the skirt to be more flared, and flowy without the ruffle, should I use the flared column on the radius chart, or will that not work?
My dear this is the cutest handmade skirt. I would make it in a minute if I were a bit younger (71 years young). But for someone younger and even a child, this is just the sweetest pattern. Kudos to you.
Your comment put a smile on my face all day even if it wasn’t directed to me
Keep being kind!!
@@Lola-kg4qy Your reply back gave me a big smile as well.
this is the most beautiful comment i have ever seen
Sharon Russell 🥺🥺this comment made me smile
Sharon Russell you should make one!
Do I need a cat to do the skirt? Or that’s just optional? HAHAHA
it’s a necessity 😋
ua-cam.com/video/pLJ5ul7jbyI/v-deo.html
Nope, you need the cat, but any breed will do. Hope this helps :D
jon girl
I think u need one for sure
It's actually a black fabric but the wrong side happened to have a more appealing color lol
Alora Madron that’s so cool!!!! both sides of the skirt just being extremely pretty
This is EXACTLY the kind of video I need. I understand EVERYTHING you said. You explain everything perfectly. Sewing along the bias can be tricky I could never figure it out but I’m still getting it. Thank you!
I had a go at this today and had to make a few adjustments to the instructions which I thought I’d share:
•at around 1 minute when she says to cut in 5 inches I decided to cut only 3.5inch and I’d actually recommend cutting around 2! (Mines based on the waist 23/24 measurement) because mine ended up too open at the front!
•when cutting the curved pieces I’d recommend to cut them more straight down and just slightly curved at the bottom because I cut my curves quite subtle and they still expose too much at the front hahah
But I loved this tutorial definitely give it a try with some slight tweaks to suit your body shape! Xx
Thanks for the tip! If you don’t mind me asking, what is your waist/ hip measurement, so I know if I will have to cut less fabric? Sorry if it is kind of a personal question lol 😂
Edit: Nvrm you said it in the comment haha
Haha my cat was sitting on my fabric while I was cutting, too! Except he helped me pull the fabric tight for a clean cut. The first time a cat sitting on a project was actually helpful lmao
Just made this and ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT
I've just finished sewing it and I'm really happy because thanks to your tutorial, even if it was the first time I sewed, it came out very well! Thank you💕
UGH I want to make this SO BADLY, but I can't go to joanns, because of the virus-that-shall-not-be-named, and I just discovered the remnant section too!
Is it weird that I am homesick for Joann fabrics??
Madeleine Kate omg same!!! But I think I’m going try to order fabric online from Joannes
Awww really my Joanns never closed. And I just got some fabric the other day.
@Chiara Taust Yup! Its one of my favorites, like so many other people!
I just finished making this (my sewn first garment ever!). I ended up adding an extra ruffle layer around the whole bottom to increase the skirt length, which actually turned out very nicely! I also added two belt loops to the inside of the back, to help the ribbon go around inside the skirt and come out right by the tie instead. Overall, loved this project- thank you for the video!
The ribbon is such a nice touch! And the fabric print is just adorable🥺
i love the fabric too!!🥰
I made this with plaid fabric and it looked fantastic!!!
Thank u💕
wonderful!! tag me on instagram with your creation so that i can see it♡♡
Hii thanks for the tutorial, the skirt is sooooo pretty!
For those like me who were confused about the ribbon part, you stitch the long ribbon on the bottom part of the skirt and it should go all around your waist until the top part overlap and that's where you do your button hole. I was so confused at first but when you understand it's quite clear!
I’m still so confused! Help 😭 xx
Laura-Beth Morrison heyy what are you confused about?
The bottom hole for the ribbon to pass through was so smart!
I made this with a satin material it’s beautiful Thankyou for this tutorial :) I had to make the back panel slightly longer to cover everything lol but it looks so cute on! now I just need a matching top
omg i finally found a sewing youtuber who has my same sewing machine 😭😭😭✨
Thank you so much! I’ve been trying to switch from a button closure to a tied closure, you tutorial is really good in explaining it!
Without a cat, but I managed to do it! Had some struggles on the way but happy with the result! Greetings from the Netherlands 😀
This is such a useful tutorial and the skirt turned out so pretty!!!! gonna try this soon for sure.
By the way, what is the name of the fabric you used?
Making it now! Mine is a little short in the front 😬 adding another ruffle lol
Maddy L haha same to add another too
Love your tutorials! You do a great job explaining and wording intentionally, so thank you. I can look away and still follow along, which doesn't happen often
LOVE IT. Adapted the pattern for longer skirt. Came out perfectly. Wish I could show you a picture.
Could you explain the waistband measurement for me?
Me too!
This is adorable! The skirt, the video, the cat, everything. Thanks for brightening my day.
Thank you for this video! I made this skirt as my first ever from-scratch garment! Next time I would cut the front pattern piece maybe only 2 or so inches in. My skirt isn't securely "wrappable" enough, so I'll probably use it as a swim cover up. I would also top stitch down the ruffles so there is less *poof* at the bottom of the skirt. Going to make my sister one (with the modifications) next :)
This is some next level craftsmanship
I love this: easy, simple, straightforward, and looks gorgeous ! I'm about to subscribe :)
this is so cute!!! my grandma gave me some beautiful yellow silk and i’m going to make a dress out of it and will be using this video to make the skirt into this wrap style🤩🤩🤩
Omg I am soooo happy I found you!! I learned a french seam, how to sew in a button hole and which settings to use and just in general how to sew this skirt. You explain things so clearly! I subscribed :)
Also you look absolutely stunning!
This is exactly the style of skirt I have been looking for in the stores. It isn't there. So, here I am on UA-cam and found this perfect video with instructions on how to make it. I want my skirt to reach my knees. So, mine will be longer. I'm really scared to try this. I usually mess things up. I have to borrow a sewing machine first. :(
the skirt is so cute! this video inspired me to sew today!
thank youuu!! happy my video helped inspire you♡
I made this to new year, with little differences and was so beautiful and easy! Thank youuu!! ♡ Kisses from Venezuela!
that is an excellent video on how to do a ruffle skirt - it looks so nice and simple to do, so I am going to do one for my daughter and use your instructions.
Ummm mine didn’t fit like that🥺 my butt said “no❤️”
Same here! Looks passable as long as I never sit down. Will try making it again a bit longer, was still a really fun project :)
i love this tutorial! i love how all your seams are nice and clean and everything is well refined :) i'll be making this soon !
This video made me want to start my channel and sew more often. It's going great ... Thank you💓
Thando Munku Ntuli 371st subscriberrrrr I lovvveeee your videos!!! ♥️♥️
This is so random, but at 7:10 you said “stidth witch” and it was so cute 😂 also amazing tutorial! I loved it! Working on the skirt right now!
Your voice is so soothing !
thanks for lesson, I did skirt for me and my daughter. super happy)
Cat goes from cat litter to clothes! Good one
why did you sew the side seams twice around 4:40?
amazing guide, by the way! this is one of the clearest sewing videos I've seen on UA-cam. thank you!
That is how you do a French seam, it encloses the seam allowance, making a neater looking seam on the inside of the garment. It is also very nice for the sides of tote bags. Google search for "French seam" to see pictures
I just made it, and I love it! Thank you for making an easy tutorial to follow x
I made the skirt today and I'm so happy with it! This tutorial is really helpful and well put together and your cat is so cute!!
I learned a lot from this video! and your cat is so cute 😂😍
This skirt is so adorable ! I would like to sew it but I have one question : you said your waist measurement is 29" and so you draw a line at 18" with seem allowance but in the shart it's write 18,5" for 29".. is it normal to take only 18" even with seem allowance ?
Thank you 😊
for the waist radius u have to subtract 0.5” for the seam allowance! its a bit confusing haha
@@AliciaYanson thank you very much for your answer !!!
Ahhhh you make it look so easy
Such a cute skirt!
Very nice tutorial, now I want to sew some, your demeanor is very pleasing. Greetings eetings from South Africa
turned out beautiful great job!!
Wow I loved this tutorial! I love your crochet tutorials also, thanks ♥️
You're so cute and the skirt turned out lovely 🌹
This is literally adorable!
Who else watching while they dont sow? Its just so relaxing
Very helpful, thank you. You gained a subbie from The Netherlands 🇳🇱
This is an awesome tutorial Alicia! Thank you for making great content!
I love your videos. 😊😊😊
I like your tutorial!
i made it turned out really cute!
You´re so sweet and the explanation is perfect. Thanks!
You did a good job, very cute!
This is a great tutorial! Thank you for sharing!! ❤️
To all the people with bigger booties 12" is too short, and 5" off the front bits for the ruffle is too much. I recommend 15"-16" and cutting the curve directly on the edge of the two front pieces.
This was my first sewing project and I'm really happy with the result! It looks great and you explained really well (even though I had some little problems)
Sadly the skirt is a little short for me even though I added 2 inches in length. I'm planning to do more ruffles or to make matching bikershorts for underneath! :)
Could you explain the waistband measurement for me?
This skirt is so cute!
Loved it!!!
definitely trying this for summer ;)) cheers!
sooo pretty looks professional!!
Adore this, so beautiful.
What a lovely fairy 💕
Thank you for the awesome tutorial! & how to use the buttonhole foot 🤗
This is very beautiful, i found your Channel with this video and im going to try this! Thank you
Im sorry i just get confused in the ribbon, like she cut 4 pieces (5:17) but then she only sew one (5:25) but then we have 2 pieces, one large and the other small(5:49) but then she only sew one, the larger think so (6:24) so the question is WHERE DO I SEW THE OTHER ONE?. Please can someone explain me 😔 ah and where do I make the opening for the ribbon? (7:00)
this skirt looks super cute i cant wait to try it out
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS!!!! ITS VERY HELPFUL! I LOVE HOW YOU DID IT!
thank youuu❣️❣️
This is such a great tutorial, thank you for sharing !
Can't wait to make this :)
Thank you☺️ great tutorial💘
I’m so confused what do you do with the other ribbon?
do the same thing but on the other side!
Alicia Yanson but still doesn’t add to where the button hole is and when tying it would bring in the under end and it’s just confusing
The button hole when she’s wearing it is at the side where the bow is. You bring the underneath ribbon all the way round the back of your body and through the hole, and then tie a bow to the top layer’s ribbon
So your underneath ribbon (the one that’s attached to the side with the hole) needs to be much longer
I don't understand the end 🙈 Which way goes the fabric band? the one you fasten it with at the end
This is so cute!!
I thought it was reversible at first! I wonder if that would look okay
Thank You it actually seems doable...
it's so beautiful! :) thank you
Is it okay to not use interfacing? I don’t have any. 😬
Perfect
ahh this is so cute!!😫💘
this is so cute and helpful!!!
so cute!
Elderberry Sprout thank you so much!!♡
I love this design! What kind of fabric did you use, or what would you recommend?? xx
Your cat in adorable and made me laugh!!! Oh, good video by the way. 😁
I love this skirt! I am trying to sew it but I have one question :my waist measurement is 39" so do i draw a line at 19.5(with seem allowance) then add the extra 12' for the wrap?
this is so cute! your cat was hilarious!
I really enjoyed your video; especially the explanations, measurements that you provided. How long did it take you to make this skirt ? Thank you!
So cute, though if you initially fold the pattern in half you don’t have to make your pattern so big and can fold the material in half as well. If you fold in half initially there’s less cutting, sewing and work. You’d have one continuous piece of fabric and all you’d need to do is cut and round the two skirt edges- far easier and simpler than cutting three separate pieces and sewing three separate pieces. Very cute though
Hi. I think this is really cute. What would advise if I wanted to make the same skirt but longer (till around the ankle)? I am Muslim and my style would be modest, covering the skin.
Dear Alicia, Thank you for the tutorial. Could you please explain how to make the skirt LONGER? Thank you!
so cute!!!
thank you!!!!!
tummy. dope.
You’re so talented 😍
Thanks a lot ❤🎉
Could you do this style skirt tutorial in a long length? To the ankles and 3/4 length as well. Thank you
I made mine longer by adding inches to the bottom. It's not full length but I need mine to at least my knees. So when you measure the second measurements instead of adding 12" measure your length from your waist to where you want your skirt to fall and just add those inches instead of the 12. You will have to adjust how much ruffle you make too. just measure around the entire hem edge of the skirt and add at least 50%. I like to almost double mine since I like tighter ruffles.
