Going to be working on my first Gameboy color soon, so I'm grateful for this video!
Got another potential better mod kit on the way and then I’ll be doing a big ol’ comparison video so stay tuned!
That’s good to know. I’m in no rush on the GBC, so I’ll wait till after that video is out. Doing a surprise SP mod for a friend first anyways.
Discord? What’s that?
The production quality on these videos are insane. You deserve so many more views and subscribers.
Is that the same screen used on the slate but unlamented?
I believe so
Do you have a solder-less IPS screen for the GBC that you would recommend? It doesn’t have to be drop in.
Drop in one is soldering optional/no solder. The Q5 is optional soldering, depending on what revision you get. If you buy directly from funnyplaying, it should be the most up to date revision. I’m working on a big comparison video for all the GBC kits that will lay out all the options better, but it might be a couple months before it comes out
I’m not a scientist but doesn’t solder hold components to the board and they last longer than the button contacts in most cases.
I'm going to stick with the Q5
I’m curious how the AMOLED is gonna stack up against the Q5
Wait, I thought this was just an IPS screen are the BB screens amoled? @@JakeSimmons
@@Johntriger this one is IPS. There is a new amoled one that is on AliExpress
How cool will defiantly be interested in that. Amoled or oled is super nice on mobile devices. @@JakeSimmons
Solid video. Thanks Jake.
This is... not cool... The ability to do something doesn't mean you should.
Why f*ck up a perfectly fine vintage hand-held. If the screen is broken, fine, you can replace it, provided you are up-front about it when reselling. But messing up a working console to get a slightly better picture? While you'd get a better result with an emulator on your phone? Or just building or buying a pre-built replica?
What are you on about 😂
I like completely stock game boys too. I pretty much only mod consoles that are broken or in rough shape. And if I do have a working screen, I sell it to someone who wants to replace their bad original screen with a good one. Personally, I think the upgrades are leaps and bounds ahead of the original screen and is well worth it. I don’t prefer emulating game boy as much because I like physical buttons and the original form factor. I respect your opinion but I don’t respect putting others down for their own opinions. You are free to do what you want with the things you own
@@JakeSimmonsGlad to hear you're only doing this with broken or poor condition consoles. And I did watch this video for finding the subject matter interesting. And yes, I did sell a broken Game Boy this week for "parts or repair" for 5 Euros. As a middle-aged collector I never see myself as owner of any collectable I may have some claim to. Just as temporary caretaker. Say I own a Sega Game Gear, guaranteed to be non-functional at this point. I can choose to open it up and put protection around leaking capacitors (to keep it original yet prevent damage) or do a recap and place a sticker inside saying it's been recapped, preferably one that doesn't leave residue or interacts with the plastic. Fair to say that in 20 or 30 years this device will have a new owner. Not trying to put anyone down. But I'd hate for someone to buy a Pokemon GameBoy Color on eBay for 500 Euros as a collectors item, only to find out it has a screen from AliExpress...
@@Dutchreason The thing about the GBC in 20-30 years having a screen from AliExpress, that's where most shops online buy their screens anyway. Plus, even though it might have a modified screen, it still needs the motherboard to be functional. And even if you got a new motherboard, most still require the original processor and RAM to be transferred over. So it's still a GBC.
Worth the same to a collector? No. But to someone who wants to play old GBC games the way they were meant to be played? Probably.
@@adamjefferies1479 Put a GBA-SP Blue in the shop today (well used ) at just 95 Euro's. Also a DS-lite Black at 40 Euro's (2 minor screen discolorations) and a DS-lite pink (just 1 screen discoloration) at 45 Euro's.
