Happy they made the playlist but the genre's rep is done. Majority of people are gonna remember phonk as cowbell house music that was used in sigma edits
I'm glad for you Yokai/Von Storm. I was just any user bumping into the Drift Phonk sound during its rise on the internet, until I found your video, and it opened the doors to a fascinating niche for me. I've been listening to Phonk for 2 years and researching its history and it's very fascinating, not to mention that it was (and continues to be) the pillar of underground hip-hop. I appreciate the works of the members of DOOMSHOP, Purple Posse, Judgment G, ISVVC, and those from my country (Mexico): ASCO 46661, VILLMANE, VIOLENCIAMANE, GHXST GHXST and the PHONK LATAM channel. Maybe, can u cover the different phonk sounds arround the world? Since Drift Phonk emerge from Russia
This is fucking massive, props to you man. But I think it also has to do with artists like Memphis Cult getting popular on tiktok with their gritty 3-6-like sound, Doja Cat giving a shoutout to Ryan Celsius and his Trappin in Japan wave compilations, and such. The genre kinda got over on its own. You are the man for bringing the issue visibility tho.
Finally Spotify actually listens, at the moment, the phonk playlist as a mix of old, mordern and trending phonk and somewhat of brazilian phonk / brazilian funk. Sure, Spotify had messed up their playlist for phonk, there is another playlist that actually represents phonk. But give yokai the credit for giving the time and research onto maknig what actally phonk actaully is. No offence to any modern phonk artists lol.
As a Brazilian, the weirdest thing in this Drift Phonk stuff trending is to see Brazilian Funk becoming Brazilian Phonk suddenly lol it's literally the same thing e.g. “Automotivo Bibi Fogosa” is simply funk here, I don't know why this is on Spotify's Phonk playlist. If Brazilian Phonk really is a “subgenre”, it's from 6-6-6, Seithèn, l v k s, Necroez, Ghost Phonk Club, etc.
Great video Yokai 🥂 As a platform that curates Rare Phonk on Spotify and Instagram ourselves, this really put a huge smile on our faces. You’ve put in a lot of effort into fixing the issue that Spotify THEMSELVES created. It's a step in the right direction with the Phonk Origins playlist, but we do have a concern. We hope it doesn't just become a catalog playlist that says, "Here's some real phonk, now leave us alone." 😔 What we think would be even better is a playlist that highlights the latest phonk tracks out right now. There's always new phonk tracks that represents the current sound, so having a moderator who updates the playlist weekly would be amazing. It would basically be the phonk community's version of the popular Rap Caviar playlist 😲💖 Let's keep our fingers crossed that this actually happens 🥂
They could not remake the phonk playlist, because 99% of people that searched it up expected to hear drift phonk. The spotify solution was honestly the best. They could also rename Phonk playlist to Drift Phonk but its fine to make a new playlist with phonk origins.
Been listening to phonk since late 2015 to 2016, basically grew up to it. Kind of hurts to see how this newer generation of phonk listeners mistake phonk heavily for “house phonk/drift phonk” or “brazillian phonk” when in reality it was based on 90s horrorcore rap/memphis rap later turning into “trap beats.” Alot of talented producers made some awesome tracks an its sad that they never got the traction that these drift phonk producers are getting. But its still interesting seeing how much the genre evolved and created these sub-genres
pretty good video never really got into the phonk genre or understood what it is. thanks for helping correct that true to origins. also first time i've seen a like button have a fancy animation had no clue that was a thing.
i think a better solution currently would probably be that, instead of changing the tracks in the "phonk" playlist, maybe they could just rename it to "drift phonk" since (at least according to what i understand) that seems to be the genre of phonk most present in the playlist unless there's a problem that renaming a playlist causes that i don't understand, i think it'd be a better solution
it's crazy how much effort you have to put in to get e response from Spotify, even crazier how much effort and views it takes for Spotify just to do something. Spotify doesn't care about it's community and will be it's downfall eventually. It's so infuriating that massive amounts of feedback and features request that are provided by the community is just blatantly ignored. The community form are just there to keep us busy. Having no customer support is such a massive red flag for a company.
spotify needs to do this to other genres, eurobeat a very niche subgenres of edm has barely any actual eurobeat songs in the spotify curated playlist and its mostly just regular/other subgenres of EDM to the point where the edm curated playlist is pretty much 90% the same as the eurobeat curated playlist. but glad phonk is finally getting the appreciation it deserves
This whole phonk situation is kinda the same as when classic dubstep was "normal" dubstep and then skrillex changed the public perception of what dubstep is really. And Im pretty sure 99% of dubstep listeners pre 2010 dislike Skrillex for it. Now its the same with phonk and what tiktok did to the genre.
I had no idea there were different types of phone. I just thought all phone was drift phonk. And I had no idea it was called drift phonk till I watched the other Spotify video. Thanks for informing me
Hey Von! If you haven’t seen yet, there is another playlist called cosmic phonk, it’s not great but, what’s better then one playlist, TWO! What’s better then two? THREE!
22:09 being a huge denzel curry fan, it's so weird hearing you refer to him as a phonk artist. I thought it was kinda funny because I've never heard him on a phonk song before I looked up the one in the video
UA-cam put this on my recommended and Just watched it. 2 months later the origins playlist hasn't been updated. I'm not a huge Phonk fan, nor did I know it was an actual genre until this video, but I have a few songs on my liked playlist that I didn't know were part of the genre. As good as spotify is, they have many underlying problems that they get away with just because of ease of access to a lot of music.
hearing my freaking name so suddenly in the video always freaks me out lmfaooo like ik my name has polish/russian origins but it always jolts me when I hear it said , its like when I was reading a bratz book when I was 10 and the airplane hostess was called natalia
presonally, I don't know how to classify lots of the songs I listen to so it's either "plugg, nightcore, robloxcore, glitchcore, pluggnb, trap" or just "hyperpop"
I just found this video. I’m not too deep into phonk but it’s interesting. If you made a video about where to start to learn the genre, I would love to see it! I just suscribed to your channel :)
This is actually freaky. UA-cam listens on the keywords in the video and when you say "Like" or "Subscribe", these buttons get a rainbow outline. It scared the 💩out of me
Now if they would actually do what they said years ago and add lossless tracks to their catalog, I'd be very happy. The quality difference in Spotify and the lossless counterparts is embarrassingly bad on Spotify's end.
I've always thinked that there was a soft version of phonk (I called it Nightcore phonk) and now that I have seen the types of phonk and said: "Where's the soft version of phonk" then I realized, It wasn't a version by itself.
I TOLD YOU GUYS! I swear to god I said Phonk wasn't dead, and that the video was probably going to bring a lot more attention to both Drift AND Classic Phonk. I can also say from first hand experience, I've heard classic Phonk and Memphis having more influence on production than Drift Phonk. I only ever see the viral version on tik toks tbh
9:30 It's important to know that Wikipedia, like traditional encyclopedias, favours *secondary* sources over primary sources. For instance, if there is new research about a topic, and press articles or books cover it, Wikipedia (by its own rules) would cite these books and press articles but not the research article itself. This might also explain why it would cite reactions to or coverage of your video rather than the video itself. Now, I'm not saying anything about whether this practice is good or bad, that's a discussion to take place with and within Wikipedia.
Didn’t know about this genre, going to check out the original phonk artists . I remember seeing it happen to lofi, a lot of artists and fans like myself saw the music we love so much get influenced in a bad way. People didn’t know who j dilla was lol but I guess trends move fast .
They don’t recognise phonk as a serious genre. One of curators of the phonk playlist even said to black17 manager: that this is “simple tiktok hype music ganre”. It’s true and sad at the same time, but this is why some artist are not being pitched in this playlist: “cuz he is not popular in tik tok” 😂😂😂(crying emoji). So as phonk producers, we just need to listen to the trends like “Brazil funk” trash music😢
