The folks over ‪@ElegooOfficial‬ were nice enough to send over their latest creation, the Saturn 4 Ultra for me to review and play around with. As far as resin printers go, this is by far the easiest to setup and start printing with.

The FAQ for the Saturn 4 Ultra answers a lot of the questions I had and also knowing that the price is $399 for this has really convinced me that this is the best starter resin 3d printer out there, if you're looking to really dive in.

This is coming from someone who has never owned or used a 3d printer.
I think the resin tray is there for when you remove the prints. So you do get resin on the machine 🤷

they misprinted because they didnt have suports. I could instantly tell what was gonna go wrong before it even happened. for dice print on the edges with a line of small supports or you will get warping also.

    • @stefanhaupt4947

quick question, coming from FDM printing. Could you elaborate why supports would have helped with the failed print? and about the dice: So, always print at the edge with support? I assume with 100% fill-in as we cannot add a hole, correct?

@@stefanhaupt4947 the first few layers get ~30 seconds of light vs the rest of the print getting 2-3s for adhesion. thats why the 1 is gone, it cured the resin that would be in the recess. there are few instances where you want to print directly on the plate, none of the prints he did were prints that should be done directly on the plate. there are supportless prints that would be fine to have done on the plate. The part of the horse that failed was essentially hanging in space by itself when it started printing, so it just stayed stuck in the resin vat on the plastic screen until part of the print that was connected to the build plate made it to it and was strong enough to peel it off. I would have hallowed those chess pieces but not the dice.

I think the whole point of this experiment was to see if the average Joe could get something out of the machine with the information provided by the manufacturer.
Just like with FDM, there is tweaking involved for each particular filament (resin in this case), supports, print settings etc. which was mentioned.

For the dice you get a better print if you stand it up on the point and use tiny supports along the edge. Takes forever putting the supports but you get a really nice clean print.

That thing is a drip tray, so when you remove the build plate, it doesn't drip on the bed of the machine.

Has anyone tested the 150 mm hr max print speed yet? Looks like its a cool printer if the titling film really gets faster printing speeds above what can be done with what's on market now.

The video only just dropped, but I skipped around to check your safety setup.
As someone with a resin printer, this is nowhere near the same as filament. It is tremendously more hazardous and you need to take it very seriously. Please go to r/resinprinting there are some very helpful individuals there.
    A few things:
The mask included is bullshit, you need a proper respirator for fumes/vapors.
The included charcoal filter that goes inside the printer is nice but it does not clean the air, people have tested this, the vapors are still all over the place at hazardous levels.
Gloves, don’t reuse them, and they are not actually completely resin proof, you can get irritated skin through gloves with prolonged exposure (this is in more extreme cases, but you should know it’s possible)
Eye protection at all times, that means goggles over glasses. Resin can easily slip under your glasses, you’ll come to find that it’s easy to accidentally splash these liquids you’ll be working with. Resin in your eye is about the worst thing other than drinking it.
Resin will not immediately irritate your skin, do not take this to mean that it’s safe to leave it alone. Treat it like you spilled acid on yourself and rush to wash it thoroughly with soap.
Be prepared for spills. Have a slapmat or other mat for working on in case of a spill.
Resin allergy is a real thing and you develop it through prolonged contact with resin.
Your setup needs to be supremely well ventilated. People at this point have come to the conclusion that it’s not smart to use a resin printer frequently within a living space. A dedicated shed is best.
I hope you enjoy resin printing, it’s cool to get some models for your games, but man it’s no joke, it’s really dangerous. I prefer the result from resin over filament, but it’s not really worth the hassle to me because I can’t adequately follow every safety measure. I do it very rarely now. Like a couple times a year.
    Please be safe Ted.

Yeah I definitely should've grabbed my face shield for it and my respirator, but too late now.
There's a pretty big 400 CFM overhead air cleaner for that small space and I had a 4" extraction line attached to the back of the printer with 200 CFM in-line extraction fan pulling the fumes through a 4" activated carbon filter all of which is venting to outside the house. It's also not like I'm printing with resin everyday either. (Oh and those are new gloves every time don't worry).
I do appreciate the concern though!

Agreed - safety is paramount, but you seem pretty “DIY-ish”, so I think you get it… just pretend there’s an OSHA rep in the room and you’ll be fine. lol. Welcome to the club!

  • @tworton1
    @tworton1 2 місяці тому +1

No supports added to the chess pieces with so many overhangs and floating parts it’s never going to be a success. Try use the auto support button as a starting point until you can understand how it all works. The big plastic tray fits around the front of the vat once your print finishes and fitted before you remove the build plate so it catches all the resin drips upon removal so you don’t get resin all over the front of the printer and into the gap for the tilt mechanism.

You need to use the resin tray before removing the build plate because of the tilt system they use you can spill resin next to the vat and enter inside the machine.
Here you can see the video of Prusa they used the same tilt system and tray that elegoo copy paste.

Never understood why these printer manufacturers ship totally pointless facemasks with these printers. They instil a false sense of protection, these masks are only good for particulates and the harmful resin VOCs (volatile organic compounds ) are just going to pass right through. You need a proper VOC filter mask or dont bother. Also the odour given off by a resin bears no significance to the toxicity of its fumes
