Hi mami i have been making this Kothavarangai parippu usli for the last 45 years taught by my mother. Now the paruppu with the same spices i grind coarsely with little water and then mix the finely chopped beans with ground paste in idli plates and steam it. Break the idlis and saute it with little oil and roast it . Tastes nice.

Hello Mami. Thanks for the recipe. Although I agree that this is a healthy way to make paruppu usili with minimal oil, I would also like to point out that it's not the tastiest. As my mom would say 'vendungara alavuku ennai vidalai na paruppu usili menniai pidikkum'. I live in London and paruppu usili is definitely only a once in a while treat, unlike Indian households back home where it's made more often. Hence, I believe that it can be eaten and enjoyed in its original full fat roasted muru muru form. Thanks. Namaskarams.

The way you make it is exactly the way my grandma used to...and I loved it. My mother steamed the beans with the ground dals and I did not like the taste when made that way. 🙏

I don't know if I will be like this with my child. En amma enakku senjadhula padhi kooda naan seiyardhu illa en kuzhandhaikku (enna dhan kalam different, priorities different nu enna naane justify pannindalum). I remembered my mom when she used to keep Thakkali vatha kuzhambu and jevarisi vadam when I come back from office at 9:00 pm. I would have asked her for it when I started from office. Ammas are great. I hope I can be one like that. Coming to paruppu usili, the way mami did will be good for "pudichu sapadrathukku" especially with hot rice and ghee. If it is too roasted, the texture will be different (ofcourse, the taste will also be great). But, somehow I feel if you want to eat with rice, mami way is good. However, I roast it like the way mami said at the end :-). Anna, yes more kuzhambu (my first tried mami's recipe) and paruppu usili - adichikka mudiyadhu. I tried precooking the ground dals in the microwave oven and it worked. It was fast, and entailed fewer pots and pans than steaming!
