    Yes I agree, location with lots of foot traffic is one of the key factors in a fast selling / profitable sari-sari store. My top five items were San Miguel Beer, cigarettes, finger food beer food, all kinds of Soda, snacks, ice, Dance outfits (tights, leotards, ballet shoes, point shoes, etc). Yes, it was a crazy mix of items. I sold whatever was in demand, the legal ones only (of course).
    During the day, my store with a canteen in the annex was catering to ballet students and their family who were there waiting for them. That school had a total of 300 +/- students and then plus their guardians. Then at late afternoon to night time, medical students (mostly studying to become an MD and or a Dentist, would come around for a drink. They came in groups. I just had a ping-pong table and dart board.
    My sari-sari store was a typical one with an over extended roof and I put 6 tables with 4 chairs each. The floor was just plain hard & solid dirt w/ pebbles. Lots of plants around it. Very clean and neat, cool atmosphere and good ambience. No music system. No TV, and back then, no WI-FI. Just people chatting away. Everyone knew everybody. If anyone was looking for someone, they would usually come by my store to look for their friend. Sometimes, they will come around to converge and have a couple of beers before they head on to their main event. It was open 6 days a week, from 9am to 10 pm ... ish!!!
    The only time I was not at the store was when I was at school. The only nights I was not at the store was during examination week. But that was okay, because med students were also preparing for their exams.
    I was 18 y.o. when I started it. It was during a turning point in my life when I had a major falling out with my parents. I had to do what I had to survive, in the most respectable way. That store started as a 2 arms - length counter as a canteen. The counter was filled with candy jars, a medium sized ice chest for soda, rented out magazines and comics for the student's chaperones. Lots of snacks, and home made sandwiches. A long table and once bench was all I had. I was blessed to have found a fantastic all around helper and a trustworthy one. Soon enough, I was able to open a real sari-sari store just few feet away from the canteen.
    While my parents put all my 6 other siblings to university, some of them double degrees and put them in private condo / apartments in far away cities. My ballet school canteen and med school & neighborhood type sari-sari store gave me the opportunity to continue Pharmacy school at a private university administrated by RVN nuns. Pharmacy at that time was a 5-year curriculum.
    That store was almost everything to me. Without it, I don't know where I would be. I had it for 10 years! I left town to work in Dubai. But the store was never shut down. I am now in California working as a Pharmacist.
    just looking back now at that now, my store income afforded me medical bills, prescriptions, clothing, allowance, tuition, books, out of town trips for externships that took up 2 separate summers, salary for my helper, and I was able to help at least one classmate pay her tuition fee for one midterm exam because her parents were late in sending her money.
    Really anything is possible as long as we put our heart into it. I wish you all the best.
    PS: just a suggestion: home cooked meals serving call centers, city hall employees, school teachers / students, hospital staff, public market, construction sites, etc. just do it as a fun project and see how it goes. Good luck and best wishes...
    If you have a little bit of money, build your home simple, and on your garden build a room for rent (boarding house type) for university students. Parents who are very concerned with their children will come to you if they find your place to be safe and secure, close to the university, and offer all basic amenities at least. If you are a handyman, you can build those room rentals or hire a carpenter, a few rooms at a time. Build your own bed, cabinets and tables. There's plenty of simple business that you do in the Philippines. Your Dollar goes a long way there.
    (sorry... it's very lengthy. I got carried away!)

    I'm fascinated by the concept of the sari sari store. When I went back to Bicol in 2008, I took pics of various ones because I liked how they arranged their goods in such a small space. My mom's vacation house is in the very back of her subdivision and we are fortunate there is a sari sari store next door to us. One, it's good when you need something in a pinch like cooking oil or cooking mix. Otherwise, my mom would have to pay a pedicab to take her to the entrance of subdivision where the small grocery store was. There are some pros and cons to sari sari stores but I don't think they are bad as far as earning extra money.

    We don't have much foot traffic as we are on a side street, but my wife wants to open one and she feels that it will be good for the two of us because we are older and retired, and it will give us something to do. We also run a boarding house where most of our Sari Sari store business is from the tenants, and they love the idea of buying from us without ever having to leave the safety of the property.

      I understand David, all I would add is a Sari Sari store is 24/7 work with little reward and if you want to go anywhere then you most likely have to close the store.
      We wish you both the best of luck, God bless.

    depends on the place actually, a sari sari-store can generate 1000-2500 pesos a day if you're in the right spot, in our place it's not in the main road but it generates around 5000pesos a day, a pig farm with 30 pigs can generate an average of 25-35k pesos a month

    • @sverre371
      @sverre371 6 років тому

      Big investment on land, buildings and the pigs to start, and an ROI of about 35% annual is not that much.... but can survive without any major problems.

    Can I make a suggestion, here in Nueva Ecija province, I noticed that lots of people love to buy freshly fried chicken. This way they can buy hot and ready to eat on the go, or bring it home for their dinner. Once you get at it, people will come, not only for the chicken, but also cold drinks. Eatery is good, but you have to provide a large area for customers to sit and eat. This endeavor will require more workers to service the customers. This is just my suggestion and hoping that it will help. God bless

    My wife had 2 sari sari stores ,and both were very successful...but her busiest store was on the national highway.She sold very similar items to what you've shown . Also ,she sold hundreds of sachet items ,3-4 grades of rice,phone recharges ,and lots of cold drinks. She was very creative in what she sold. As she was across the street from a high school gym,she also sold small packets of frozen ice that athletes could drink...,...which she packaged herself. Her philosophy was to get customers to the window,they will buy something else. Her father was a farmer,she eventually established relationships to sell rice to restaurants by the 50 kilo bag. I had suggested to her one time that she try something novel..."Philadelphia soft pretzels" (with mustard) which is extremely popular as a quick snack in the Pennsylvania area. She could have made them herself or gotten a partnership with a local baker. She was skeptical, but after I moved her to the states...and she had two, with a coke at a local farmers market she said....yep...I could have sold a LOT of these! Not hard to make,there are recipes on the web,they must be soft and served warm and go great with a soft drink. They are kept moist and sold warm.

    Chris and Mel,
    I can tell you from experience, owning a sari-sari store is not that profitable. It is a lot of work and you are right, there is no time off. If you take time off, you have to close the store. Keeping it stocked is an everyday affair. Finding the correct products to stock that are fast movers is another issue. With a sari-sari store located in almost every house, building a customer base is very difficult. Having cooked food is an advantage, but it is also time consuming. We own Maly's Country Market and although we do make a minimal profit, there have been times we wonder why do it at all. But for Maly, she enjoys when people come by the store and it is like a community hang out. It keeps her busy while I am away and gives her something to do.

    they also may money from selling a LOAD for the cell phone, but having rice and food does help, I have a friend in Negros has a Sari sari and is always working. She opened a childrens toy shop but not a good Idea. Selling frozen goods may have been a better idea, but brown outs can be a problem, you would need a solar unit for back up.

    A decent store can make 300 pesos a day easily, even in a subdivision just selling the basics, beer - smokes - snacks and sodas, but the secret is buy a twin deep fryer and sell chicken packs and chips, pineapple and banana fritters, fish and chips etc, even a basic 300p a day is still a nice 9k a month profit, and that here in the Philippines is not to be laughed at :) peace out ...

    Sari sari store has 20% profit for every items you sell, except for cigarettes that has 40-60% profit!
    ex. a can food with capital of P20 and you sell it for P24 you've got P4 profit
    if your gross sell for a day is P3,000 means you have P600 profit x 30 days = P1,800 not bad as extra income.

    • @crisun
      @crisun 7 років тому

      hell do yo really think ,i mean now really think they would sell 750 pieces/stuff of items each day ?
      750 pieces * P4 = P3000

      @geoffconnelly8377 7 років тому

      He means 3k a day = 600 profit per day, not 3000 pesos profit a day :)

    how about hardware item. its very nice also to sell hardware items. u can start openning a shop in pront of your house or beside your house. about 15 k pesos you can start buy hardware items in the whole seller. and sell it on how you like to put enterest in each item. i know from a cost off 50 k pesos of your hardware selling items ,it will like making a profit about 15 k amonth. so means if you have 100k pesos off amount of gooods your selling ,probably it gives you 30 k pesos of profit. and no worry of expiration.

I do have a good location but still a lot of work. I ended up renting out the sari sari store. I make a little less but have more time for me and the wife to do other things. Most small sari sari stores are just money laundering operations that sell very little, but get consumed by family and relatives, and magically restock every month. Having the store obscures the fact that they have no visible means of support, yet always have money.
    They are also used to obscure where the money goes from the daughter or foreigner sending money. Money gets sent to restock the store and pay all critical bills, items get sold and money spent on some nonsense. Then when the one providing the money asked where all the stock and proceeds went, a bunch of ambiguous expenses are claimed.
    These sari sari stores are part of a symbiotic family relationship where the daughter wants the family to have something to keep them busy.

      A Brit in the Philippines Chris Wren, I think you can see that if it was run like a legitimate business, including your store, it wouldn't work.
      Some factors some will use to claim the store is "profitable" are:
      1. Free rent (because they own the property). The value of the rent should be listed separately, as if the sari sari store was isolated from the house and rented out to someone else to run a business. The fair rent value has to be included, the actual property is the thing earning the rental value.
      2. Free or underpaid labor. In a real business you need to pay someone legal minimum wage and SSS and Philhealth. If you found a place to rent and hired someone legally to work there, you would pay a lot more money for labor.
      3. One thing I'm sure you are familiar with is the occasional infusion on cash to keep the store running. It may be bundled in with other excuses such as "we eat food from the store without paying so it's ok" or "it's for expansion of the store" when in fact only a small percent of the infusion goes towards CAPEX.
      As you and any other expat observed, these stores selling to 5 customers can't possibly be earning, so the cash is coming from somewhere.
      The only local stores I see that had a chance of being profitable were basically at tricycle, jeep or bus terminals.
      I didn't go back and see if you already did a video explaining what it took to get the store up and running, or the monthly cash infusion to keep it running.

      Marc Pereira I totally disagree with you. I’ve seen many people living in cemetery in the PI and getting thrown away food from restaurants and consuming them. A lot would eat once a day, rice & salt and worst of all, many would only drink dirty water and go to bed on an empty stomach. So please, do not speak nasty and say discriminatory comments about others. You started the derogatory comments, so deal with it.

    sari sari store sucks you when people make credit and promise to pay on the payday but didn't show up... i watch many of your videos and i saw one time that you bought a vacant property... my suggestion is: start your own vegtables garden... you can start at the low capital and if have enough knowledge/research you can earn good too. planting veg. can never be wrong, you can sell some at your in laws store and eat healthy too.

UK not good enough.?..the move to another EU high income country....but rather be fast...the BIG B ("BREXIT") is coming (as 1 Jan 2019).

      Hi Lucian,I am 56 years old and unable to walk into a well paid job similar to the on I gave up to live here.There is no way I would exchange what I have here for the UK nor would I subject my young wife to a mean selfish culture.
      The leftist are doing their best to get out of Brexit because they all want to one day be Governed by a Muslim state.I'm very happy where I am thank you.
